They're about to officially announce the discovery of the Higgs-Boson or God particle. Exciting stuff, that Large Hadron Collider might have been worth the whole 'blow up the Earth possibility'.

It's a particle that was supposed to be present according to quantum physics but was unobserved because it is, stay with me here, everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Without it's existence, scientifically, everything is massless. The Large Hadron Collider blasts particles at near light speeds and the resulting collisions imitate the conditions of the big bang, temporarily(less than milliseconds) exposing the particle.

so what does that mean, why do we benefit from knowing this other than the fact that we know it and it's importance to physics.
