Re: Official Speculation Thread (Pt. XXXII Off-Season Editio
Besides those of you who are just plain refusing to deal with the Nets, for the others, would you deal with them if they could get Orlando an expiring contract, Brooks, and Lopez for 10 mil a year?
Summer of 2013 would be a net gain of 5 million on our capspace and we'd have just 25 million invested into Meer, BBD, Lopez, and Brooks. We could hit FA hard and get a SF, PG/SG. Remember, Lopez would be a 18/8 guy.

i think Dwight is well within his rights to demand changes on this team, i think he's well within his rights to advise us that he's unhappy and doesn't plan to re-sign with us once his deal is up, but he's got no rights to dictate where we trade him if we want to trade him. i'm sick of players bullying teams into getting to play where they want.

What's the rush in getting out of bad contracts? Come 2013, who would you target if Dwight isn't here? Because there's not really anyone you can build a team around. There's a ton of talent, but the type of talent that'd only be worth bringing in if Dwight is here, not the type of talent you rebuild with. Also Hedo and Duhon's contracts aren't fully guaranteed. So they can be cut and from my understanding they'd take up half of their current salaries.

I'm okay (but not happy) trading Dwight for an expiring contract, so long as that expiring contract is Andrew Bynum.

exactly my train of thought.....i believe we're both looking at the big picture....people seem to be letting their anger and frustration do the talking....people need to remember that this is a business....if the deal makes sense then it would be stupid for a business not to at least consider it as one of the options....Rob to me seems like a big picture type of guy....

its a good thing you dont own a business, you would run it into the ground. you dont let an asset just die, you use it, for the best it can give you.
And a lottery pick doesnt always work out. Kwame Brown? Okafor? Derrick Favors? Wesley Johnson? Thabeet? Tyreke Evans? Beasley? Mayo?
All top-4 picks. Some have turned out to be okay players, some barely hanging on to a roster spot. None of them are a star.
If you own business you should know that you buy low and sell high. In this situation you stay neautrual until you can use your asset again to your benefit or oportunity arises to sell high. Nets offer is garbage. Nobody got rich by panicing.

Meer, BBD, Lopez, Brooks and who? Find me someone in next year FA group that would get that lineup to the Finals. I'm not seeing one. Josh Smith? That'll get us to about 3rd or 4th in the East and a 2nd round exit.

its not that the Magic is doing something wrong, Dwight has shown so much immaturity that no one wants to risk him. If he was under contract for 2 more years, we would easily have more offers. But he tells everyone that he wont resign with them, why would any team give up any decent players for someone that will most likely walk away after this year?

No Dwight Howard trade is going to get Orlando to the finals next year. Orlando is not going to be a great basketball team for another 3-4 years people. REBUILD! And last time I checked, Orlando wasnt getting to the finals with Dwight Howard

If the Nets cannot consummate a deal to rid us of Hedo, JRich and Doo-hon, plus trade us a slew of picks, Brooks, Lopez for ~$10M and an expiring, there's no way we should even consider dealing with them.

I can agree with that. But people saying, bench him, send him for nothing to siberia. Our plan is to be a lottery team, a lot of teams become lottery teams and they dont come back from that for a long time.

So you're Henny, two options on the table, only two.
1) Dwight for Bynum straight up.
2) Dwight for NJ returning Lopez at 10 million a year, 9 million savings over Bynum.
Is Bynum worth the extra 9 million? What can that 9 million buy in addition to our existing space next year?

Exactly, then what's the point in getting out of bad contracts if we're not going to contend for another 3-4 years? That's not a selling point.

maybe the need to get out of bad contracts isnt high when you arent going to contend. But picking up assets to either trade for more or develop is better than getting absolutely nothing.

For real folks, wake up, Bynum is the best we're getting in terms of all-star caliber players. No one we get is taking us to the championship this year. Look at the results next summer or the year after or after that. Is Brook Lopez on a 4 year 10 mil per deal netting us 9,10,11, and eventually 12 million more capspace vs Bynum that much worse than Bynum? Guy averaged 18 and 8 two years in a row before Humphries started jacking all his rebounds and the guy moved on to scoring buckets.

Without Dwight I am not that interested in having a ton of cap space for next years free agents. Harden is the only one that I would consider throwing money at. If the goal is to not be good and preserve space for a free agent crop that you are excited about then getting outa Turk and Duhon's contracts are not priority #1. They come off the books the following year. Getting picks, young talent, and dumping J Rich should be the priority

Not getting rid of things when you can get rid of them is a bad strategy. If we can dump guys and bring in other prospects to take up their minutes, it's worth it.

How high do you expect these draft picks to be? I think you guys are way overvaluing what's going to be done down the road after you trade away the best big man in the game. I just don't see us being in much better position if we trade for Lopez, Brooks, and some picks than if we gave our best effort in keeping Dwight and him end up leaving. I'd rather start with the clean slate actually if that's the case. Not have $10+ million of cap space taken up each of the next 5 years by a supplementary player like Brook Lopez. You don't build around a player like Lopez.
