Jason Thompson

Post#1 » by kevin44 » Thu Jul 5, 2012 5:41 pm

We have to keep this kid. I am worried the cheap owners will not resign him unless the price is right. How much is he worth? He's worth more than the qualifying offer of 4.1 million. Hawes got 6.5 million per. Landry Fields is getting 3 yrs 20 million.

Dream scenario would be considering our cheap owners.....

No one matches, AK signs on the cheap....

Hopeful scenario would be no one chases JT until at least we talk to AK seriously.

I say let him walk if someone bids and the choice is him or AK.....

Most likely some one tries to make a mediocre bid on JT and we match then end of free agency basically.

He can get about $7-8m a year on the open market.

Think he will be in the 6-7 range, unless someone really wants him. No way should we pay more than 7. If we did not have Hayes bloated contract, I'd sign JT for 7, but if we are stuck with Hayes then 7 is too much to pay IMO.

And both will be STARTING for the teams they are on. There are differences here, it's not a flat across the board thing. If you think that way you're using the same type of mentality that trades a 1st round pick for a player who ends up as your 4th big in the rotation. Now is the time to be smart about what your team needs, not be concerned with keeping non totally crucial pieces at all cost. Like Daly, he'd be great to have on the team but in the end you just brought in a player who will basically fill his role so you have to pay accordingly.

Bass is getting $20m for 3 years. JT can probably command the same type of money.

Personally, I agree and think that tying up $12m a year for your 2 bigs coming off the bench is too much.

I think JT has really improved his consistency, but he's somewhat expendable now that we've drafted T-Rob.

What I think JT is worth is anywhere between 5.5-6mil. Wouldn't go over that.
Question. How many teams would A) need JT or B) want JT for more than that during this free agency?

JT is definitely a player the Kings need to keep around to develop. Put him alongside Cousins and that'll be a good frontcourt.

Cousins
Thompson
Salmons
Evans
Thomas

Plus with Thomas Robinson, Marcus Thornton, Jimmer Fredette off the bench. Not too shabby.

Develop? He's been in the league 4 years and came out of college as a senior. He's in his prime and has yet to show any level of consistency. He's a nice rotational big. Definitely not worth any more than the $6.5mm annually the Kings are offering. I personally would MUCH rather have Anderson. I also wouldn't mind finding other cheaper rotational bigs (Steimsma, Arthur, etc..). We need role players. T Rob and Cousins will dominate the front court minutes. If JT doesn't want to back up those guys for the next 4 years then he needs to go.

Thompson is important to this team. He can play C or PF, so he can backup two positions. I have a feeling he won't be back unless the price is low. When Brandon Roy gets over 5 million per & Bass gets over 6.5 million per I have to think Jason will want 6 million per.

He's only 25 years old and big men don't usually pan out as quickly as guards. Thompson has shown flashes of being good, he will eventually get some consistency down to his game. As far as Anderson goes, he's pretty much peaked in his career, whereas Thompson is just starting to flourish.

Peaked? He's younger than Thompson. Anderson has gotten better every year he's been in the league. He's a perfect fit for a team with a dominant big man. Anderson actually fills a needed role (40% from 3 while shooting 7 3's a game). Thompson is redundant and disappears often. Not to mention JT hasn't been able to lock down a starting gig on a horrible team over a 4 year span.

What ever the Kings threw at him I'd rather see them use as a bid for Elton Brand. We need more veterans on this team, and Brand would be great for developing Robinson and Cousins.

We will find out soon what JT's value is ESPECIALLY if we sign Anderson. If nobody tries to sign him for more than the QO then I guess that is a sign of his value as well. 6-7, 7-8, 6-8 million...all the same to me.

Sac definitely needs some vets on this team, Brand would be a good fit.

I wouldn't mind that either. I think all the scenarios JT/Anderson/Brand present pro's and cons. I think though the unknown of the other two is more desirable than JT.

Not in todays NBA. Jason was extremely important, before you upgraded him in the form of Thomas Robinson. He's worth more to another team that will use his talent than the Kings. JT can be a productive player for the right team and a possible starter.

And this is just it, Anderson provides major need, Thompson doesn't bring anything that you would hope Robinson wouldn't.

If the Kings sign Anderson they have to let JT walk. You can't waste all the space you've been saving for 5 years on Ryan Anderson and Jason Thompson after you just used a top 5 pick with a ton of need filling types of players on Thomas Robinson. It's like building a house and buying nothing but doors when you also need some windows.
