Batum Contingency Plan

Post#1 » by TheProdigy » Fri Jul 6, 2012 10:23 pm

If Portland matches our offer for Batum, this is what we should do:

Release Webster and Miller
Amnesty Darko

Sign Courtney Lee for $7M/year
Sign Greg Stiemsma for $3M/year
Sign Alexey Shved for $3.5M/year
Re-sign Anthony Tolliver for $2M/year
At this point, the Wolves are at about $59M in total salary for next season

Use MLE on Brandon Roy: $5M/year

Depth chart:
Pekovic/Stiemsma
Love/Williams/Tolliver
Budinger/Johnson
Roy/Lee/Shved/Ellington
Rubio/Ridnour/Barea/Lee

Rotation:
Pekovic 30/Love 10/Stiemsma 8
Love 28/Williams 20
Budinger 30/Williams 18
Roy 20/Lee 28
Rubio 28/Ridnour(or Barea) 20

That's decent, but I think we should go for Iggy if they match Batum.

If we don't have to include DWill, then I agree. I'm pretty sure they would want him in return.

I also think if Williams is here, he'll be playing SF. Other than that, it's decent. I might sign Bjelica instead of Tolliver, though.

So Shved is going to come here to play 0 minutes per game? O.o

We shouldn't rely on the assumption that Minnesota can have a roster that includes Shved, Barea, and Ridnour. There's no guarantee Shved would even want to play on a team with so many guards.

Looks a little heavy in the backcourt still. I like Hummel to make the team and I think we'll move Ellington or Lee and I'd like a bigger body than Tolliver backing up at PF who can defend a bit better.

I hate to trade DWill, but this works as well:

Trade Williams, Johnson, Ridnour for Igoudala
Sign Courtney Lee for $6.25M/year
Sign Greg Stiemsma for $2.25M/year
Sign Alexey Shved for $3.25M/year
Re-sign Anthony Tolliver for $2M/year
Use MLE on Roy for $5M/year
Minimum for Bjelica
Minimum for Hummel

Pekovic/Stiemsma
Love/Tolliver/Bjelica
Igoudala/Budinger/Hummel
Roy/Lee/Shved/Ellington
Rubio/Barea/Lee

not at all..if we offer that much it's still less than iggy by 2-3 million per year...if it is not matched we get him for "free" e.g not giving up any assets for him and we have that asset in place for 4-5 years...i think he'll peform great in our system...if we get iggy we give up assets - potentially williams with the risk of losing him after this year when he can opt out.

Makes sense. If you're willing to take on Iguodala but prefer Batum we may as well pay him Iggy money.

IF Batum falls through I'm on record as saying:

Waive Webster & Miller
Amnesty Milicic
Sign
Courtney Lee - 4 yrs/22 mil
Greg Stiemsma - 4 yrs/10 mil
Anthony Tolliver - 1 yrs/3 mil

Rubio/Ridnour/Barea
C.Lee/Roy/Ellington/M.Lee
Williams/Budinger/Johnson
Love/Williams/Tolliver
Pekovic/Stiemsma/Tolliver

Next year we need to renounce Ellington's rights and get out of Barea & Wes' contracts. This would get our salary levels down ~$47.5 mil. If we get out of Roy's contract we'll be down to ~$42 mil. If we renounce Pek's rights then we get down to ~$36 mil.

So we can have ~$22 million in cap-space with a core of:

Rubio/Ridnour
C.Lee/____/M.Lee
Williams/____
Love/____
____/Stiemsma

Re-sign Budinger for a couple million, a back-up 4 and it would leave us with enough to sign Dwight outright if/when he stays in Orlando and become a free agent. Bynum may be available, Redick should be around the MLE. Say we are to nab Bynum, who should be a solid fit with his defense and age. Nab Redick with MLE.

Rubio/Ridnour
C.Lee/Redick
Williams/Budinger
Love/Williams
Bynum/Stiemsma

courtney lee is a solid, but that'd be the end of our cap space and that roster looks like 4th or 5th seed potential at best

I think we are through with Wes, I don't think he will be in any rotation of ours next season if at all possible.

With Roy on board if we don't get Batum then I'd rather go after Granger than Iggy, better fitting game and less reliant on athleticism.

With large expirings in 2 years. What alternative method do you have for jumping into contention? Please don't suggest something that will never be successful, like trying to hold on to cap space for Harden.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

if we make that offer to batum big enough and we get him without having to give anything up...we suddenly find ourselves able to offer a package of something like:
miller/webster/wes(salary relief - believe wes can be declined after this year) and memphis 1st which would trim excess fat around the edges and probably bring back a pretty decent player and/or a draft pick depending on the contract we were willing to take back...so could be very worth it.

How do we make a big offer for Batum without releasing Miller and Webster?
