Rockets appear close to bringing back Brooks

The Rockets moved toward bolstering their shrinking backcourt ranks on Friday, with the potential to replace last year’s starting point guards with their predecessor.

The Rockets have spoken with representatives of free-agent guard Aaron Brooks with the sides showing “mutual interest” in bringing him back to Houston, according to a person familiar with the talks.

The Rockets traded Brooks, the first player Daryl Morey drafted as a general manager and a former Most Improved Player award winner, to the Phoenix Suns in 2011 for Goran Dragic and a first-round pick. Brooks played last season in China with his team advancing to the CBA Finals, preventing him from returning to the NBA after the lockout.

With Dragic agreeing to return to Phoenix this week, it opened the way for Brooks, a restricted free agent, to return to Houston. No meetings are scheduled, but talks are ongoing according the individual with knowledge of the process. He said that signing Brooks is not dependent on the Knicks decision about matching the offer sheet Jeremy Lin will sign with the Rockets. Like Lin, Brooks is also restricted free agent, but the Suns’ other moves make it likely that they will not bring him back.

The Rockets have also “touched base’ with several other point guards, Ramon Sessions and Raymond Felton, according to individuals involved in those talks. Signing those free agents, however, is considered unlikely.

In four seasons with the Rockets, Brooks averaged 12.8 points and 3.6 assists.

if we're rebuilding its not that bad to bring back brooks

he needs to get back to his high scoring pg status. he can do that in like 2 years, then we can trade him for a high draft pick or young players

Rockets Suspend Aaron Brooks for Early Exit

Brooks, unhappy with having been taken out of the game in the fourth quarter on Saturday night, walked straight to the locker room instead of sitting on the bench. Houston has punished him with a one-game suspension. From the Chronicle: “Frustrated for weeks about his diminished role, Rockets guard Aaron Brooks will have no role at all tonight against the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets suspended Brooks for one game for leaving the court in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies at Toyota Center, general manager Daryl Morey said. Morey said he would have no additional comment. Brooks did not travel with the Rockets to Denver on Sunday. Rookie guard Ish Smith will be recalled from the NBA Development League in time to join the team in Denver. Brooks was taken out of Saturday’s game with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter, but instead of heading to the bench, he went to the locker room. Brooks has said he had been frustrated with his role coming off the bench and with his play but had gotten over it. He was not available for comment Sunday. The tension among Rockets players has seemed to become an increasing issue in recent weeks, with coach Rick Adelman working to squeeze Brooks into the backcourt rotation, often closing games with Brooks and Kyle Lowry playing together. That has limited the minutes of several players, most notably Courtney Lee off the bench and Kevin Martin late in games.”

Has NY officially matched our Lin offer, or have just stated they would?

Dont worry, with 4 rookies this team will tank itself.

I really hope the rooks get big minutes. Particularly lamb and dmo.
