Obviously it depends upon what you think of Anderson, but since Orlando could have matched they could have kept the full 100 cents instead of getting change. And since they are below the lux tax but within the MLE of the cap, it wouldn't have cost them any free agent money this offseason at all. So I just don't see the reason to take below market value for an asset.
If New Orleans takes a couple of 2nds for Eric Gordon instead of matching I will say the same thing. Even if you didn't see him on your team with that contract, I think you could have matched and got better value later. (I suppose there is injury concern but with Anderson I don't see it being nearly enough to overtake that basic idea).
But it's not nothing and Ayon. It's cap space and Ayon. Now, the Magic won't be able to use that cap space yet, but it will be valuable down the road.
I do get your point about matching the offer and trading Anderson down the road like the Nuggets more or less did with Nene.
It's not a strategy I'm opposed to, but it's a strategy that comes with risk. There isn't a great market for PFs as is and if Anderson's numbers suddenly were to go down (with Howard getting traded) you run the risk of being stuck with him.
I do not think the Gordon comparison is fair. Granted, Gordon also comes with risk of his own (being injury prone), but he's a far superior player to Anderson and unless he becomes Brandon Roy 2.0 there will always be a market for him out there.
