They offered Ray more money per year out of sentimentality; not because they think he is better than Terry.

The NBA is a business . . . If they thought Ray wasnt worth 6 mil a year , they wouldnt have offered him 6 mil a year . .

You have to use the money or lose it. Big difference between using the MLE and and being able to go over the cap to resign your own players. Can't compare signing Terry to Ray because usually the team would have been able to sign only one of those guys.

You're right. It is a business. Do you let a huge asset like Ray Allen go to your biggest rival and let them improve, or do whatever you can to keep him from them?

Well said except Ray Allen was no longer a huge asset. I personally think the Celtics probably thought of Allen as a 3-4 million dollar player next year and a 2-3 million dollar player the year after that. They were willing to overpay him but just to a certain extent.

Given all that, it still makes sense to offer him 12 million over 2 years if you think he is better then anyone else the Heat could get for their 3 million dollar exemption. And you realize that the CBA makes it hard for you to get anyone better.

Health is really the Celtics gravest concern right now. They should really try their best to avoid injuries even if that means they are a 4 or 5 seed instead of a 2 or 3 seed. Losing Ray Allen may help in this area since he is obviously getting older.

I meant huge asset in the sense that it would hurt the Celts' chances by allowing Ray escape to the defending champs, further weakening their own chances.

They offered Terry the most they could, because he wasn't on the roster last year. We offered Allen double of his best offer from another team because we could afford to, based on he being on our roster last season. The offers have nothing to do with who they value more or who they think is better.

What will matter is what Terry brings to the table this season.

The guy thought he'd been traded to Memphis last year. Danny doesn't care if Ray re-signs, he got Terry and could get another SG that will be more valuable than Ray for 6 million.

Such a double standard...Throw Ray Allen to the Grizzlies after all he's done for us and it's just business. He decides to leave for Miami after his role is obviously diminishing and he's a traitor. Who cares if he leaves. He's not a traitor- he wants to enjoy his last few years and have fun.

The double standard is funny because he leaves for less money, after almost being traded multiple times, and he still mulled over the decision for days.
He's a Celtic and he'll go into the hall of fame as a Celtic.
Give him the respect he deserves after the sacrifices he's made for us fans as a Celtic. He should be cheered when he returns, and then booed when he shoots like most opponents of the C's- but he shouldn't be hated.
He'd basically be third string behind Bradley and Terry this year.
Without Ray there is no banner in 2008. Remember that

Now this is the classy Celtic fan. Well said sir. The venomous approach by other posters come off as emotionally fueled and immature. Ray did great things for the Celtics and he deserves to pick and choose where he finishes his career. If he is as bad as most Celtics fans say he is, then the news of his departure should be a relief, no matter who he signs with.

Imagine if in 1992 Larry Bird announced "screw you losers, I'm going to team up with Laimbeer and Mahorn because there is sunshine, golf courses, a chance for rings, and because Ed Pinckney is mean to me."

You trolling, sadistic Heat fans are ignoring the flip side. Boston was pretty friggin good to Ray Allen, too. He won his only championship here. The celtics owned comcast sportsnet station let his wife have her own terrible cooking show. He was well on his way to having #20 retired. That might not mean a lot to Heat fans, but in Boston we retire the numbers of guys who were great players for our basketball franchise. Ray has been making $10+ million every year here and was offered 2X the money and possibly a NTC or trade kicker as part of his next deal, so everyone needs to cool it with the no respect thing. They call it the big 3 for a reason. The disrespect was on the part of Allen going to a rival franchise for half the money, to, as Woj put it, "stick it" to the Celtics.

He is indeed south beach afterall. I am sure you guys are happy with your new player. He'll be great for you. And I truly and sincerely wish you'd all go back to your Heat board and celebrate amongst your own kind. But do not pretend like he didn't stab the Celtics, their fans, and his high school buddy kg in the back on the way out. As a poster put it in another thread, it's better to try and fail with your brothers than celebrate in their face as the enemy. It's called integrity and the celtics gave him the best, most "respectful" offer. Ray is like the guy with the hunchback in 300 who betrayed the Spartans.

I think people find two things really wrong with this

1) Ray signed with the same team that bounced him out of the ECF, a few weeks after it happened. This team, The Heat might also be the most hated team in NBA history so anyone that goes there will automatically be hated.

2) Ray countered the Celtics with triple the money the Heat wanted which was almost a raise over his existing salary. This probably is the thing that rubs people the wrong way the most, as he didn't live up to his contract in the 2nd half of the season and felt he deserved a raise to stay.

I'm only going to say this once and never respond to Heat trolls in this board again.

Heat fans high as f*ck, trying to be Ray's bestfriends defending him and sh*t.

This seems to have turned into a Heat thread. Hey, nobody likes rejection, so I'm sure that's where a lot of the angst is coming from. But I was with many here who were hoping we could trade RA for a first round pick last year (we were turned down).

Ray was great when he arrived and helped established a culture of professionalism which helped make Pirce and Rondo into bigger stars. His skills have declined a bit, and he is now a bit like Reggie Miller at the end of his career. He should be able to help the Heat, but he won't be the difference in a championship team any more than he was for us for the last 3 years.

Good luck to Ray.

I appreciate what Ray Allen did as a Celtic. At the same time, how can I care that the Celtics lost to the Heat in game 7 when he can so easily jump ship and take 1/2 the money? How can a guy lose a gutsy 7 game series to a rival and then so easily jump ship a month later? He will forever be Basketball Judas to me as a Celtic fan!

Even if I believe he is a nice guy and a true pro (which I do) I must despise him as an entertainer. Either I accept that the games mean absolutely nothing (which they do but that is no fun) or I continue to enjoy being a fan. If I remain a fan, I have to boo him. And if he doesn't like that, maybe getting paid millions to play a kids game isn't right for him.

Maybe he didn't trust Danny's intention to keep him and figured this way he could play for a winner. At the same time, he is leaving a bad taste by burning bridges with Rondo and Danny (whether or not he is doing the talking or not).

The rumors to Miami started before game 7 and he gave his all in that series and was the ultimate professional. I appreciate what he did here but I cannot wish him well. Johnny Damon gave more to Boston and fulfilled his life long dream to be a Yankee and he has been a pariah ever since. Ray dissed his hometown team. Unless the Celtics offer was insincere and behind the scenes he was aware that he was not in their plans ... then I am disappointed in him.

I hope he stinks up the joint and gets traded to Toronto by February
