he was also apparently dropped on his head a few times when young. And while Hibbert on a low-maximum deal could be justified, McGee on one could not. Yet it would probably take about that to even have a chance. Too high risk compared to reward with McGee, IMO

He may sign your offer sheet, but he could wait a day or two for the Pacers to sign a player before signing your offer sheet knowing that we would match. I don't think you would wait on Hibbert tho.

He may sign your offer sheet, but he could wait a day or two for the Pacers to sign a player before signing your offer sheet knowing that we would match. I don't think you would wait on Hibbert tho.

I don't think Portland will pull the offer sheet - both for the off chance that there is a chance Indiana doesn't like the frontload, and two it would look bad for future free agents, IMO. They'd wait for Hibbert to just sign with Indiana.

This is also true, though according to David Aldridge they've just offered the same terms of 4/58. If they don't offer the same, specific front-loaded terms we've speculated about it'll be interesting, though the 7.5% raises might deter that.

This more than anything. It's kind of an unwritten rule in the NBA that you follow through with a verbal agreement.

I guess I could be OK with the idea if they want to throw big money with a run at McGee. It's possible that's why he's not signed or seriously talked with anyone yet. He's dumb as a sack of bricks, but he'd at least provide some rebounding, blocked shots and occasional hilarity.

I don't see where it is douchey. That is just the nature of the beast. No legal or binding agreements can be made yet, and you have to expect that a player will take the best deal available when the moratorium ends.

Of course, if a player doesn't like feeling like he is a second priority, then he is free to leave an extra couple million on the table. However, there is a reason why the NBA made legal agreements unavailable before July 11th, and it is for situations like this, when flux happens at the last minute.

I haven't seen any official word about the Pacers just offering matching terms, but I've seen it hinted at in a few places including this thread title. If that's really the end game here then why didn't Hibbert just take the Blazers offer to the Pacers in the first place and say "I'm signing this unless you offer the same value." Maybe that wasn't strong enough or maybe he actually did and then the Pacers didn't step up so he made it more official?

What I don't get is the whole verbal agreement thing. He'd agreed to this with the Blazers...agreeing to sign the contract. Now he may not do that in favor of signing the same offer from the Pacers? Technically, this works out best for Indy and Portland. If it's true that the Pacers will just match anyway, then doing things this way allows the Pacers to have cap room now with Hibbert's cap hold rather than his contract number and Portland can offer money to someone else. But, all of that could have been happening over the last week too so I don't get the game of footsie.

Maybe there really was hesitation on Indy's end about this deal but now that they've decided to go ahead with it, everyone is on board with this?

Anyone holding out hope that this is some smokescreen by Indy is grasping at straws.
