Re: Jason Thomson
Considering some of the deals being thrown around in the free agency, JT @ $6 million per season is a bargain.
Nice little get for us. Now on to T-Will whom I think has the potential to be a real bargain signing for us. The guy clearly has the talent and fits in well with out team. He is on the verge of becoming a very productive player for us.
Let's hope that is another little bargain we can g secure and then move on to the trades to sort out our messy roster. I am wishing that Petrie has some incriminating photos of some GMs and/or team owners around the league so that we can dump Hayes and Salmons to them fro some expiring deals or some other productive players that address our needs.

So the only way we can make changes is by making trades?

They are at 85% of the cap which is the min they are forced to spend. With the new coll barg deal smaller teams, like the Kings, will get a bigger share. Basically they can now make money with Arco half full. If they spend the full 60 million & don't sellout they will lose money. Unless they change the way they run this team the only way to improve the roster would be a trade. We just don't have much to trade, except for Evans.

JT + Chuck = 12 mil per for backups.
This contract is decent at 1-2 years while T Rob develops, but we all will be crying about JT's salary after that.
How many guys are we going to pay mid level inflated salaries till we learn the lesson?
See
Salmons
Garcia
JT
Hayes
Kenny Thomas
I'd rather play T rob full mins, and sign an el cheapo like Darnell Jackson at league min and platoon gamble with Hassan.
What if we need that money JT will be making to sign a quality SF or other more important member, and he bogs us down for 4 more years?

So, you are telling me you are ok having Demarcus Cousins (one of the most foul prone players in the league) back up consist of a guy who hasnt proven anything! All to save some money for the possibility of future moves? Wow, i guess the Maloofs have worn some of you down.

Garcia's contract, which is the same amount as JT's will come off the books next year so problem solved. Salmons contract, which is larger than both Garcia's and JT's falls off the season after.

Our owners are going to hover around 51 mil unless they can grab a real solid player.
So JT + Hayes = 12 mil for 3 more years, just JT after that.
12 mil of a 51 mil budget is about 25% of our budget.
Saga and cycle continue.

He and chuck are on the same paybooks for 3 years and JT the fourth.
why would you reward a mediocre player 4 year security?
better off signing someone on the cheap for a single year unless you are playoff bound.

By itself no, but in the grand scheme of things it is. You go out and sign a rotation big in Hayes last year for 5 million a year. You then draft Thomas Robinson who will make somewhere in the 3-4 million range. Then in a completely fill no holes duplicate the same kind of move you re-sign JT to a 6 million a year deal. Then you factor in Cousins and Evans if they re-sign and voila, there goes your "flexibility". Not good for a team still looking so lost on paper. All you can hope is that you have no repeat of last year where many of the assets you spent assets for tank in value and/or you cut your losses ASAP if it's not working out because now you can't just let guys walk, they'll be making big money on long term deals.

Re: Jason Thomson
The roster is out of whack, no debate about it. In the grand scheme of things no one ever thought Robinson would be around at 5. The plan was to trade back for Lowry/pick. However Robinson was there and they took him. So you gotta throw out the old roster plan you spent all offseason creating and start a new. Hayes used to be in the picture before the draft, probably as your third big but things change. Now you are forced with questioning who is more valuable to your team? JT or Hayes? I think GP made the right decision in JT. Im sure the new plan will address your concerns. I doubt Hayes finishes his contract out in Sac. Looking at the bigger picture, the Kings upgraded the PF position, shifted the old starter to the bench, and are left with the old bench player sucking up a lotta cash. He will be traded. Someone get Morey on speed dial

$2 million killing the cap?!
Now I have heard everything!
We really only have 3 bad contracts, one of which is essentially expiring deal after the season (Garcia) and the other 2 will be troublesome to move.
We might still have some chance to move Hayes, some slight chance.
OTOH, Salmons is impossible to move. The only saving grace is that the last year of his deal is only partially guaranteed ($1 million) and the contract actually decreases from season to season.
Depending on how he goes, Outlaw could be a bad contract or a bargain. I tend not to read too much into player's form after the lockout because they are generally not as prepared as they normally would be and let's not forget that Outlaw broke his shooting hand (or was it wrist?) and that does require a fair while to get over. If he plays like he did to close the season as a starter then he is worth the deal.
JT at his new contract is quite reasonable. Its just over MLE money for a productive player that can play both C and PF. He is as good a 3rd big as a team could hope for and that is not taking into account the intangibles that he brings to the locker room. Seeing the deals getting thrown around this free agency period, JT is somewhat of a bargain. An average of $6 million over 3 or 4 years is a good deal for an effective big capable of playing some time at C and PF.
If we can move one of Salmons or Hayes, we get the flexibility back instantly. Trade both and we are laughing. Something tells me those guys will be with us for a while though.

JT is a very moveable asset.
Enjoying him for 1-2 years and then moving him if/when T-Rob develops, while getting something in return is a very likely scenario.
Beats the hell out of losing him for nothing right now.
This is a good deal for us.

Garcia's last year is a team option, so he's essentially expiring now. He's no longer a bad contract.
Salmons isn't immovable. I'm not saying his isn't a garbage contract, because it is. But terrible contracts get traded all the time in this league. Ben Gordon and Joe Johnson are recent examples, but there are plenty more.

Is he? Was there even another team out there putting a bid on him at that level? I heard nothing about Jason Thompson being a hot commodity this summer. Also, it depends on how he's used. If this team is hard up for defense like I think it is, JT might become that guy where you realize you have what he does covered with your starter. If Smart follows suit with the way he ran his rotation last year it's right back to Hickson/JT last year off the bench. Probably not as bad because I would assume Hayes is now your backup C and JT is your backup PF. JT playing 15 mpg will tank in value, I repeat TANK in value. And that's not even knowing what his value around the league was.

It really makes complete sense with the way things are going. They let Daly go, then let Hayes go, that's how teams get better defensively, they move all the guys that can play defense. Get better at shooting? Simple find guys that can dribble drive but can't hit the side of a barn in the middle of the daytime. The shooters you have? Oh easy, turn them into penetration pick and roll guards.

Re: Jason Thomson
JT was fine off the bench last year. So fine that he played his way into the starting lineup.
