KC's article, at the above link posted by BG7, hints that Houston won't actually ink the deal right away since they have to tie up some other moves first. It never dawned on me they might not sign the papers on Wednesday, thus dragging this out even longer.

Joakim Noah's lingering ankle issues are a factor in the decision.

extremely. Like I commented in the Noah/Hawaii/Angie thread. The fact that he is still working on that ankle to this extent is disturbing, as is the French team not having him healed yet. Its not a normal injury

Asik Discussion, P18 Aggrey- Bulls leaning against matching

Post#704 » by Magilla_Gorilla » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:24 am

KC article also quotes Ronnie Brewer as saying Bulls cut him so they wouldn't pay luxury tax, and that the Bulls are optimistic about tre trade market for Kyle Korver.

Doesn't sound good.

wow !
what an absolutely great thread, far too much good stuff to multi quote but after reading this whole dam thread, i'll throw in an 11th hour opinion.

common theme 1) at 5m per, he is a good value
but in the 3rd yr at 15 per, he is not,
at an average of 8, he's meh, we'd prefer less, and kind of preferred 4 yrs.

common theme 2: he's an offensive black hole. most of the reasoning against his 3rd year is his offensive concerns (yes thats an understatement)

is it possible... that in the third year that many of you are assuming is a deal breaker (or at least right on the line) that his offensive ability's stop right here and will not improve ?

sure, maybe he'll turn into a bedrinis (who has made 9m per for quite some time) but I don't think he will...

One thing I'll submit, for your consideration, just for a second think about how he could improve on offense, and even on defense as he gets more respect with the ref's ....

with 2 more full years in the nba, before he enters his 3rd year of this dam backloaded deal (kudo's to houston for throwing that wrench) its just maybe possible that he improves enough to be an 11million dollar man, or whatever, then 1) his contract isn't outrageous, and he's really only slightly overpriced, not crazy overpriced like many of you are saying..

I just don't think he's hit his ceiling..... well frankly he's on the dam floor right now offensively, so he can ONLY get better, he certainly can't get worse.. would we feel differently if he had dunked that last shot in philly or made both free throws ? perhaps next time he will :)

so i say match, this kid will be entering his prime, the real problem is 3 yrs away, we're a big market team, this isn't Minnesota... take the deal.

RealGM just reported that the Lux Tax level is $70.307 million. I guess Asik won't be coming back.

Didnt CJ say after he spoke to GarPax they told him they wanted to bring him back but financials were a concern? So Brew and CJ both citing the lux tax as a problem

Yes, with them on contract the Bulls were at $75,964,363. So I guess minus their contracts off, add Kirks and then minus Asik's QO off. Now reports of the Bulls trying to trade Korver make it obvious they are really trying to get under the line.

Currently the Bulls are at $67.7M for nine players. Chances are they're going to have to go into the tax to fill out the roster, even if they won't be paying a huge bill.

If they don't re-sign Asik, the concern would be the payroll in 2014-15, as well as next year when Taj could get overpaid too.

If the Bulls are going to match because of Joakim Noah's ankle, that is extremely short-sighted and stupid. I hope that's not true.

Few things I do not like what I am hearing......

Trading Korver I will be fine trading Korver to get a better player however if trading Korver just for pure salary dump that is beyond stupid if that is the case hopefully it isn't, and if they are going to let Korver just walk I would punch the wall.

I am all for matching Asik offer however I am a bit worry about Noah's ankle injury even though people's body are different and ankle sprain depend how bad the sprain is, and the grade that it could take a lot longer than people think to heal. The way he sprain who knows...

I think it's fair to point out when someone is vehemently arguing two viewpoints that when compared are diametrically opposite of one another, even if the two viewpoints focus on different subjects.

Again, it just seems a bit hypocritical. You pretty much refuse to acknowledge that Asik will be on a bargain contract for two years and will only be on a bad deal for one year; you focus on that one year. On the other hand, Boozer has been on a terrible contract for the past two years, yet that did not stop you from defending him.

Seems fair to point out.

When the Bulls signed Boozer, they signed a market deal for PF. Boozer, both his doing and the way the Bulls utilize him, have not had success. In hindsight, the deal is a bad one. But it's a necessary risk, Boozer if he pans out was the 2nd option at PF the Bulls have NEVER had during any of their years of success.

The difference between Omer and Boozer is two fold

1. You are signing Omer to backup a player you've already committed dollars too
2. Boozer was signed to be the difference maker while it's quite a reach to say Omer Asik alone makes you a title contender and without him, you're not

I'd love to see the Bulls amnesty Boozer since a trade isn't happening but I think they wait a year to do it when they need to look at Taj and when they can think about bringing Nikola over.

Not necessarily. If Bulls can trade Korver, don't match Asik, and sign 3 players to the vet minimum contract of 854,389 then they will be right at 70 million.

This luxury tax for 2012-12 is very important for the Bulls. Judging from the comments from Brewer and CJ, the Bulls are hesitant about going into LT. But, not going there is not only a bad omen for the fans but also for future stars who want to get traded here like a Howard. Somebody like Morey/Cuban will definitely sell that point. This is a semi-PR hit for the Bulls to not go into LT even though it makes sense not to go into LT because of the probability of winning with Rose injured is very less.

Also, the Bulls have to go into LT every year they have a healthy Rose even if the cast seems a little inferior sometimes. That is maximizing his healthy years.

Bulls to Match Asik's Offer Sheet

Post#716 » by Angry Jimmy » Wed Jul 11, 2012 6:15 am

According to Rant Sports blogger, Riley Schmitt, the Chicago Bulls will match the offer sheet signed by Omer Asik from the Houston Rockets.

This means that the Bulls will retain Asik, therefore he is going nowhere.

The Bulls will tag-on Asik's new backloaded 3-year $24.3 million dollar contract.

With the removals of C.J. Watson and Ronnie Brewer (and most likely soon-to-be Kyle Korver) from the roster enough cap space and cap flexibilty was made by the Bulls to be able to take back Asik.

Omer will be expected to return to the back-up center position in the rotation. However, if the Bulls are willing to pay him somewhere in the realm of $14 million dollars in the third and final year of his contract, they obviously are in love with the guy and believe that he will continue to develop and nudge further and further in the depth chart.

First off, who the hell is Riley Schmitt.

Second, if this means we're not going to pay Taj next year I'm gonna be pissed.

I don't know them or who their sources are, I actually got the story via tweet, which came from a 3rd party, which I eventually traced back to the cited links. Take it for what it is I suppose.
