Dahntay on the move?

Post#1 » by granger05 » Wed Jul 11, 2012 2:52 pm

The ESPN rumors page has a blurb about Dahntay Jones going to the Knicks.

The New York Knicks are going to let Landry Fields move on to the Toronto Raptors and not match the offer sheet. The team could use some wing players and according to Newsday, a source says one target is Dahntay Jones.

Jones is entering his final year under contract with the Indiana Pacers and he's set to make $2.9 million in 2012-13.

The Knicks are short on assets with all the trades they've done the last year and all they can really offer the Pacers is cap relief. The Knicks can send Dan Gadzuric and his non-guaranteed contract, along with Mike Bibby via a sign-and-trade and that would save Indiana almost $1.6 million.

The Knicks will have to fill out the rest of their five spots on the 15-man roster with players signed to minimum contracts.

I don't feel like Dahntay is a crucial piece or anything, but I'd rather have him than Mike Bibby even in a cost cutting move. Bibby would never play. Dahntay can be awful, but he always tries hard and I think that probably helps the team during practices too. Plus he's played some SF and we need that with the current roster.

I don't like it. Would rather have his professionalism and the depth he adds here. That stuff is invaluable come playoff time.

I can understand why the deal would go through though.

I guess it depends on what they do with the extra cap room. If this is the difference in creating enough space to get a more interesting deal done then that's fine.

If we end up doing this deal, leave this one hanging a little bit. See if we need the extra cap room. Gadzuric would be serviceable because having an extra big on the roster won't hurt anything, but Mike Bibby, no thanks. Dahntay is professional and although he was in the center of the Lance Stephenson conflict a couple years ago, he's still a tough-nosed pro who can still provide some help D when called upon.

When Dahntay Jones is our last option on the wing, that's some promising depth.

So, unless we absolutely need the savings to sign somebody we actually want, I would not pull the trigger on this deal.

The only real incentive I would have seen on that roster (that is movable) would have been Josh Harrelson, but they moved him to Houston in the Camby deal. Other than that, I just don't care much for a Gadzuric.

If Dahntay had more than just this year on his deal, I'd consider something where we just dump him. Right now though, he's an ok piece and he expires anyway. Not sure we necessarily need the space right now.

the story I heard was that Lance bragged that he was the best player in the history of NYC basketball and Dahntay made the mistake of laughing out loud which earned him a punch or two. hard to fault D Jones too much for that.

I'd gladly trade him for a backup small forward but it doesn't sound like the Knicks have any left.

^^^ Unless we could get a noticeable upgrade (whether that being production-based or financially), I wouldn't do it, considering Dahntay is expiring. We could either put that cap space toward next off-season (ahem...Paul Millsap) or use that expiring contract in the middle of the season when teams are more desperate.

If moving Dahntay creates the budget room for signing Courtney Lee or OJ Mayo I'm fine with this move. But if we aren't able to get something done with a wing who can significantly upgrade what we have right now, I think you would like to have Jones around. As opposed to Lance or OJ, Dahntay is at least a known quantity.

Don't really like Gadzuric, i'd rather have us re-sign Fes.

Dahntay, well i still want him in Indy. And i'm optimistic Bird and co. still wants him too. Off the court, Dahntay seems to be the glue-guy. He's good friends with our youngsters especially Paul George and George Hill. As posted above, i would understand if the deal pushes through but i'd really prefer Dahntay staying.
