Luis Scola

Post#1 » by SmashMouthRod » Thu Jul 12, 2012 11:26 pm

The Rockets will use their amnesty provision on Luis Scola.

Houston is pursuing a trade for Dwight Howard.

Scola is owed $21 million over the next three seasons.

The Rockets will have the cap space to absorb the contracts of Howard and several others that the Magic seek to eliminate.20SC1vfxR

This could be a big time opportunity for the Pacers bench to get even better. Should the Pacers attempt to claim Scola?

Sure, but I don't know enough about the waiver claims process. I believe only teams under the cap (we currently are until the Hibbert and Hill deals) can bid and I presume they can bid up to the amount of cap room they have. I think that's 4m for us, but I'm not sure. Is that enough? What happens to the remaining contract years? Are we on the hook for them? I haven't explored this yet.

If I understand correctly, teams would be bidding on his current salary (if the amnesty waiver wire works the same as the in-season waiver wire.) And does the under-the-cap provision still apply in the off-season?

We'd be pretty far down the waiver wire list considering our record, but if we want him, can't hurt to talk a shot. I know there has been a lot of trade talk centered around Hansbrough (maybe less now that we signed Augustin outright.) But if we could find a deal for Hans, Scola would become one of the (if not THE) best backup 4 in the league.

I'd be ecstatic to get him, but realistically Dallas will probably take him. If they do we might be able to net Elton Brand

This explains the waiver wire process in regards to Scola:

What's their cap situation? I'm sure we can still offer about 6m-ish.

Yeah, I thought they were capfrozen. We could have a realistic chance at either, but will obviously depend on other teams with room.

Interesting link Gremz. That's good to know and it makes us a more likely destination since fewer teams have cap space available. I like that the bid just becomes what you pay for the remainder of the contract. How does the bidding process work. Everyone submits a claim and any tie would be broken by inverse order of the standings?

Yeah, I'm not sure who could offer up much. I did see a tweet on the General Board saying that Cleveland might have interest and that worries me a bit.

The more I think about it though, I think Dallas will lean towards Brand. He's an expiring contract and would help them maintain their flexibility.

Perhaps there's a slim chance for us yet.

No, thank you. Don't want him to hurt our defense in the second line-up and if Vogel keeps playing them together like he did last year, it would be much better if all 5 of them could run up and down the court like mad men. Scola would only hold them back and ruin chemistry.

I don't see the need. he's a potential starter and we're set with West.

Minimum bid for Scola would be $10 million for his remaining 3 years due to some weird cap quirk.

Doesn't make any sense to get Scola because we didn't have to send Hansbrough to Charlotte for Augustin. Not that I wouldn't like to see Hansbrough get moved, but we have too many frontcourt guys as it is anyways.
