I think from Howard's standpoint, it would be a better situation for him to get traded to the Lakers than to go to Houston. 8-)

Tommy Dee: Morey is a smart man but hard to figure the scola move. No chance Howard stays in Houston. He will force his way to Bk.

I could still see Houston using the amnesty on Scola even if they weren't in the Howard sweepstakes.

Somemone will claim and clear more money off their books.

Houston has to be a little apprehensive to absorb bad contracts and trading picks away for possibly a rental.

Whether that's a ploy or not remains to be seen I guess, but I think it's a dumb move considering the situation they're in...
They need to trade Dwight soon to give fans some time to get over it and give their marketing team time to sell them on the new look team.

I don't know if it's overvaluing so much as not realizing you're aren't going to get equal value for a Dwight Howard. It's like trading Shaq to Miami all over again, but without the sharks at GM

Magic just blew up twitter...

Earvin Magic Johnson ‏@MagicJohnson

One more big trade left for the @Lakers. A trade w/ the @Orlando_Magic would benefit both teams.

Not that he knows anything or is involved in any way... Or is saying anything in particular for that matter...
But he's blowing up twitter just the same.

TNT's David Aldridge says that the Nets want to keep Kris Humphries and are not currently facilitating a sign-and-trade deal with the Bobcats (Twitter link). In fact, it appears that both teams are competing against each other to sign him. ESPN's Marc Stein tweets that Charlotte is currently offering a three-year deal worth $22MM, while the Brooklyn is offering three years and $24MM.

Kilroy wrote:I agree... Houston will be renting him for sure with how little they can surround him with anyway. No way that team beats anybody in the West without some major upgrades and the FA class just isn't that spectacular right now.

Not right now, no. But then that's not the plan. If HOU lands Dwight and he does end up coming with most of the Magic's supporting cast, expect them to offload as many of those guys as they can as expirings or by bundling them with picks. HOU would likely bank on locking Dwight out of the market, and right now, it seems like a plan that could work.

Adding onto this, the class of 2013 has some pretty solid names besides Chris Paul: Josh Smith, Iggy, Harden, Ibaka, Wall...

Granted, not all of them will be UFA, but Morey's never been one to shy away from chasing restricted agents before. Just look at Marc Gasol, Jeremy Lin, and Omer Asik. And this prospectively puts a lot of teams in a bad place if they're approaching the tax threshold (by that time, the more punitive tax measures kick in). It isn't hard to see HOU putting max bids on either Harden or Ibaka or both just to test the Thunder FO, and if you can weaken them any and still build around Howard, what's left in your way in the Western Conference?

The Clippers? Possibly, but we'll see what they look like this time next year.

Spurs? Who knows? People have counted them out before, but they always get back into it.

Us? Yeah, alright, sure. Even if we lost Bynum to FA, the very worst you're looking at is probably a top 5 seed -- the very worst.

So, as I've said before: if you're HOU, you've got to like your chances. There's a very good possibility they could be a top 4 seed in 2 years time.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what Morey has in mind, but from his past actions, it seems likely. He's not exactly a hard-to-read GM.

If Dwight would rather go to Houston than LA, he's an idiot and I hope he rots there in mediocrity for the rest of his career.

This will not end well for Houston unless they do a three way trade with us to land Bynum. As some have already said he will not resign there. You think Dallas sucks now wait until next year when he leaves Houston. Unless they trade him at the deadline, and if Im lakers I dont know if I make that trade. At that point its only a playoff rental pretty much. I would rather have all season for him to take in LA, build chemistry with the team, then dare him to leave. I wouldnt play that game over a couple month span.

Kilroy, just because a Howard trade is looking unlikely doesn't mean a Sabathia trade has to be.

Woj:
Howard has insisted that he would not re-sign with the Rockets, but owner Leslie Alexander and GM Daryl Morey have remained unmoved and unbowed in chasing Howard.

One can only hope Worthy, one can only hope.

But it looks like they're prepared to take the Howard plunge.
