OT: Olympics Thread

Post#1 » by fatlever » Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:11 am

with the USA having their first exhibition game tonight, i figured it would be a good time to start an Olympics thread for all talk related to Olympics.

what else do we have to talk about over the next month?

I guess we're a write-in for Gold in basketball. Don't really know who else can compete with us in that regard.

The big news is that the UK has really dropped the ball on planning. Citizens complaining about anti-aircraft batteries being installed above flats and the military having to pull duty because the private contractor doesn't have enough bodies. I can't imagine we'd have these issues in the United States. Then again, the last time we held a Summer Olympic event some crazy man bombed it. Go figure.

Cousins should have made it over Davis once Griffin was injured.

I honestly think Irving is better suited for international play than Deron Williams.

As I mentioned on the OTB a few days ago, we can play half-ass defense and still win because the international squads play no defense.

Be careful of the Spaniards! Even without Rubio. Their frontcourt is great with gasol brothers and ibaka and thats by far our weakness.

if you had to make an alternate USA squad - that did not include any of the current 12 man roster or any injured players - to fight for the gold or silver with usa, spain and argentina, who would you pick?

my picks

pg: irving I rondo I kidd
sg: gordon I ellis
sf: pierce I joe johnson
pf: duncan I randolph I josh smith
c: garnett I bynum I

Dont care that much about his mind, but the select team did beat the national team 3 days ago, and Cousins was best player on the court. Hes immature, but it isn't like hes going to go in the stands ala Artest.

PG: Irving | Rondo | Brandon Jennings
SG: Tyreke Evans | Kevin Martin
SF: Gerald Wallace | Wilson Chandler
PF: Duncan | Josh Smith | Derrick Favors
C: Bynum | Channing Frye (shooting)

Lots of size, lots of scoring, tons of athleticism. I would have included Hibbert at center but apparently he represents Jamaica.

I like the Kevin Martin pick. Thats the kind of player that would go crazy in a FIBA game. Frye would be a reach though in my opinion. Brook Lopez would ne a decent backup to Bynum.

piggy backing on ric buchers discussion about 92 vs 12 dream teams.

you pick the players 1 - 24 based on who you would take. here's the catch, you are selecting the player as they were at that exact moment in time, not their career ie bird has a bad back and magic is coming off missing a year of ball due to HIV and anthony davis and stockton have bum ankles, barkley in prime, kobe not in prime etc...

mine
1. jordan (peak jordan)
2. lebron
3. barkley (was on fire at the time)
4. kobe
5. pippen (best defender)
6. durant
7. robinson
8. paul
9. malone
10. drexler
11. mullen
12. ewing
13. melo
14. westbrook
15. williams
16. magic
17. love
18. bird (barely played with bad back)
19. chandler
20. harden
21. iggy
22. laettner
23. davis
24. stockton (was hurt whole time)

if stockton, bird and magic where healthy, i think 92 wins easily. the fact that those 3 were limited actually makes the discussion not so ridiculous. in the end, i think the 92 team had the best player - jordan. 2 of the top 3. 3 of the top 5 and 6 of the top 10. they had the best wing defenders in pippen and jordan. they had better team passing. their biggest advantage comes down low where barkley, malone, robinson and ewing would manhandle the 2012 team. 2012 is quicker, more athletic.

7 game series - 1992 wins in 6 games.

Lol, what? Barkley used to get into fights about every game back in the day, Cousins is a puppy compared to that.

Id say 92 wins in 5. Way too much downlow.

....

Waaaay too much downlow. Barkley would break someones jaw before this team won a 7 game series.

yeah, but barkely was the 2nd best player on the planet in 1992.

and barkely ended up being the ambassador for the USA team during those olympics. he was the media darling and the fans adored him because if his personality. i dont think cousins has the charm or skill to get away with what barkley did back then.

Gotta admit he would be a MUCH better player for USA than Davis right now.

yeah, just too much down low and pippen, barkley and jordan would not lose back then.

if it comes down to crunch time, 4th quarter of a close game the dream team would have probably gone with: pippen, jordan, mullen, barkley and robinson - using pippen at pg. 2012 would probably roll with paul, kobe, durant, lebron and chandler? dream team just has too much size, rebounding better go to scorers, equal defense. if mullens is getting beat, drexler comes in. if they wanted more size barkley slides to sf and malone comes in. too many options.

After Colangelo said that he went and made Chandler and Love look like puppets. Need his size, badly. He can keep his stuff together for 3 weeks im sure.
