DAMN do I keep calling em.

I think someone in the Pacers staff reads our board... I called Fesenko at the beginning of last year. I have mentioned Gerald Green as a target a couple of times.

Of course, I've probably mentioned something like 50 targets over the last year, so....

I'm happy with this. Green is a guy who came straight from high school with no basketball knowledge or skill, really, just his amazing athleticism. He still has that, but now he's got basketball skills, and will have a fairly well-defined role here. This should work.

some highlights of our
new swingman
Gerald Green.

freakish, off-the-chart
athleticism.

can't wait to see him
in action.

Well said.

I really wanted Gerald or Monta that night, but somehow Granger dropped. It's good to see that Green did not throw his immense talent away, plus he's still relatively young. Remember, Granger was a senior coming out of college, and Green was a senior coming out of high school. Where does that put him, around 25?

Whatever it is, all this salary we're adding seems that it could be easily moved if things don't work out.

He's 26 and hopefully nearing his peak. Timing's incredibly excellent.

Here's a Grantland article about Green from back in April. It's an interesting read. I like that he's learned that he won't be a superstar and he needs to find other ways to stay in the NBA. Maybe he can pass those lessons along to Lance too.

I said it at the end of last year and throughout the summer. If PG hasn't put in the work this off season and comes in inconsistent on the offensive end or shows little improvement off last year (I have suspicion that he may not have), then I have no problem with Green eating his minutes, or even replacing him as a starter. Sounds like Green is willing to fight for everything, and Paul just looks kind of blase sometimes. Hope PG has put in the work. Glad to have Green!!!

Isn't Paul George playing on the USA select team this last week and training against the Olympic roster. I suspect he's putting in some work on his game.

Congrats on the signing.

He's an easy guy to root for and his dunks are comic book with a cape stuff.

You can't help but wonder why the Pacers chose Gerald Green over Courtney Lee and OJ Mayo. Gerald Green hasn't lived up to his expectations coming out of high school. He had one stretch of solid performances with the Nets after a few years of team-hopping and playing in Russia and China. Obviously, Green costed significantly less than Lee or Mayo would've, but Mayo had been targeted for years by the Pacers, and Lee has been a solid, consistent player for the Rockets. With Mayo being targeted for a few seasons now, the decision to switch to a player who hasn't been tested for a whole season yet seems questionable to me, although Mayo can be very inconsistent himself.

I think we wanted more of a 3 and less of a 2 as the plan is to let Lance sink or swim with the backup 2 minutes. if he flops, we can always fall back on a three guard rotation with Hill, George, and Augustine. Hill and Augustin can play together just fine if HIll and Stephenson or even Hill and OJ fail.

I agree with Wizop. We desperately needed a 3 more than a 2. On a good note, Green could play either spot, but we need him backing up Danny. I really doubt we're done signing though, as another wing wouldn't hurt.

He would've costed less, but his stretch of 20 good games isn't quite as convincing as Mayo's 4 years with the Grizzlies or Lee's productivity with the Rockets.

And why do we need to save money at this point, if we're not going to make more moves this offseason?

So you think we're going to have to let Danny go already in another thread but don't think that overall finances are linked?

Oh, and Mayo's 4 years in Memphis weren't necessarily convincing. We declined over 4 years. Not exactly amazing. Would he have been a nice add? Absolutely. However, would he have been a bit overpaid on the premise of potential? Absolutely.

We save money on Green now, so that we can afford to take on extra salary in a deal and have room up against the luxury tax mid-season. Or, if we need to sign a different player or two mid-season. Or, we are just being fiscally responsible and hopefully getting similar production at 1/2 or 1/3 the cost of Mayo.

I really like this signing, as I think Green has a lot of room to grow as a player. He's already a very good scorer coming off the bench, and I think he can still get better. The fact that he can play both the 2 and 3 is gravy on top.
