If Houston didn't officially sign him to an offer sheet (all indications are that they haven't; pending Dwight) the max the Bulls can give Asik is is 4 years of the MLE + small raises: roughly 4/24

So unless one of the other teams still under the cap offers him more, then no, he can't and won't be paid more.

I'm saying, that regardless of what happens, they're going to offer him that 3/25. Just like regardless of what happens, Houston is going to give Lin an offer sheet to sign. Taking it away would be unethical.

Omer get pissed at the Rockets please. Look at what they're doing, they're making you wait!

Yeah - I expect the Knicks to match immediately as a sort of show of support for their new starting PG.

That generally hasn't been the case in years past. Teams like to make the other team wait as long as possible because the offering team can't use that cap space in some other way. The Knicks may go to Lin and tell him they're going to match. But publicly, they'll say something different.

The Knicks have already said publicly they're going to match - Mike Woodson said Lin will be his starting PG this season.

you are correct; there is no way that an agent will work with them ever again if they did something like that. Remember the offer to Asik was contingent on him agreeing that day, and agreeing to cancel all other free agent visits. I'm sure the Asik camp would be none too happy

You may be right, but I'm not so sure.

If they trade for Dwight then they're going "all in" and if they do that they're gonna do everything possible to make him happy so he doesn't leave, and I'm pretty certain that paying the backup Center 8 mill a season isn't very high on his wishlist.

You're right. It wouldn't be high on his list... but unless they want to be blacklisted by every future FA, they'll make the right choice and offer him the contract still. It's what they'd get for not thinking this through beforehand.

Yes, but then last night their GM came out and said the they'll "likely" match but will need to see the offer before making their final decision.

either way, no reason to actually match until the end of the window. it's part of what the offering team has to deal with when they try to take a RFA away

This type of thing happens, not sure why people are acting like it doesn't. It's obviously not good, and yes agents/players do get pissed but it happens every once in a while.

The Bears did something similar just last year. Jerry Angelo had a verbal agreement to trade picks with the Ravens, waited til the Ravens were on the clock then backed out.

It was talked about a lot for a few days, and then most people forgot about it.

If Houston trades for Dwight "ethics" go out the window and all focus is shifted towards making him happy.

There could also be a mutual decision to part ways. Omer could also decide he doesn't want to be a backup to the best center in the league. I'm guessing that Portland is waiting in the wings to offer him a similar deal.

You guys really think that NY and Chicago are happy with how Houston structured those deals? Nope not one bit. So why would they do Houston any favors by matching quickly. Once Houston does those offer sheets, that money is frozen. This is why they won't do both at once freezing up all that money for three days.

NY and Chicago will make them wait 3 days.

I am pretty sure Asik doesn't mind backing up Howard at a salary average of $8+ million

FWIW - that was the only way Houston could have structured the deals.

It rarely happens in sports and multiple reporters have said that it's a big "no-no" in NBA circles. There would have to be a mutual reason not to do it, but if you're Omer, there's no reason why you wouldn't want an $8M on average contract regardless of your role.

Maybe Daryl Morey should've thought about that before he started offering dumb contracts to Lin and Asik. Houston right now looks like a team in desperation mode grasping at whatever straw they can find.

I'm not saying Houston did anything wrong but if NY or Chicago want to keep their own players they have to pay a hefty price at the end of the deal. The Bulls or NY will do Houston any favors.

I'm not arguing that - I'm just saying the Bulls and Knicks both expected it - from whatever team signed them - because of the rule.

I also think, that the Knicks/Lin situation is going to be treated differently in that I think the Knicks match immediately for Lin.

RT @McGrawDHBulls: Got to think Howard to HOU talk, more big men coming on market have Bulls re-thinking thoughts of matching Omer offer.
