Star Wanted

Post#1 » by dukeknicksirish » Thu Jul 12, 2012 8:29 pm

With the talks of Kevin Love's displeasure with the teams forgoing future leaves the question of who is the "star" talent in which Love desires? He talks about how the team needs to make changes to ensure his contract with the team going forward, so this leaves a question to teams management, who is the player Love wants? If Kevin seeks a star to team up with, who would you (Minnesota) be willing to give up and how much would you be willing to spend?

If the Timberwolves do in fact acquire Batum, what is the remaining peace to keep the Love in Minnesota? The other idea was to go after Iggy, but would want him playing SG or go after a different position?

This has basically been discussed in the other threads, but if Minnesota is able to come out of this offseason with Batum, Roy, Shved and Stiemsma then that would be a huge step in the right direction. Of course, Love would love to have an all-star or two join him, but that won't happen, considering most of the league's all-stars seemingly play for 5 teams now.

Adding solid players like Batum, Roy, Shved, Stiemsma and Budinger will GREATLY improve the roster from last year. Really all Min lacked last year was production from the 2/3.

Rubio/Ridnour/Barea
Roy/Shved
Batum/Budinger/Williams
Love/Williams
Pek/Steamer

Rubio/Barea
Ridnour/Ellington
Wes/Williams/Webster
Love/Williams/Tolliver
Pek/Darko

No need to discuss Love right now. He has a couple years left on his contract and we've been through this situation before. Even if we were to discuss it. I'd say West + George + a 1st or two if we nab Batum.

Iggy would fit in very nicely here. I'm a fan of Batum, too, but Iggy is overall a better player right now and the next 2 or 3 years probably as well.

I wonder if Williams took in what Love said and maybe he is trying to step up as our "star" he officially lost 15 Lbs with the help of Loves trainer (248-233), got surgery to fix his septum so he can breath better and during the visit to the doctor found 3 fractures in his nose they fixed. With summer league, training camp, and some NBA experience I think he will improve nicely.

I'm sure Williams would love to be a star regardless of Love's opinion.

Well yeah every player wants to be a star, but he was the no 2 pick, he should already be our star... maybe hes mad he didnt get to show his full potential last year so I think he is going to step it up to show the team why he was the no 2 pick.

Safe to say Gasol is out of the picture.

We amnesty Milicic and it makes it near impossible to match salaries with the Lakers with Roy & Shved on board unless we trade both Derrick Williams & Nikola Pekovic, which isn't happening.

We could trade Williams+Johnson+Barea+Ellington for Gasol and it works but using Webster & Miller to acquire Roy & Shved make it unlikely. Plus that leaves Budinger as our only SF.

This thread should be renamed to Wins Wanted. We don't have to go out looking for a 'Star" player. We need to go out and find players that will help us win. And from all reports that is what we appear to be doing so far this offseason. I'm not saying that Roy/Shved/Buddinger will be the star. I'm not saying Batum will be the star if we get him. But they have added players that should help us win much more often than we have been. The TWolves will be on national TV more not because we signed a star, but because we are winning more. We will be on more ESPN highlights. We will run deeper in the playoffs, and THAT is where we will see who our star is. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Pek or Williams being that star. As long as we bring in guys that actually do the things we need to win games, Love will be happy and everything else will be fine.
