Pacers Done With Their Moves?

In the first two days since NBA teams have been allowed to officially make transactions, the Indiana Pacers have made a bunch of moves. They traded Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones to the Dallas Mavericks for Ian Mahinmi [four-year, $16 million contract], signed Gerald Green to a three-year, $10 million contract and agreed to terms with D.J. Augustin. That deal will pay the point guard $3.5 million for 2012-13.

The Pacers will also formally sign center Roy Hibbert's max $58 million contract and George Hill's $40 million deal on Friday.

At this time the Pacers probably won't make any more big deals to fill out the roster. Mike Wells of The Indianapolis Star tweets: "The door to make a trade is never shut, but don't be surprised if the Pacers are done making moves. They accomplished what they wanted. ... Pacers wanted their starters to return. They did that by re-signing Hill and Hibbert. They wanted to upgrade the bench. That's TBD."

The Pacers currently have 14 players on the roster and they may not fill the last open spot until we get closer to training camp.

If we're really signing those deals then our cap space is gone so that would be it outside of an exception signing. Who is the 14th player on the roster? Granger, West, Hibbert, Hill, George, Lance, Green, Augustin, Hansbrough, Mahinmi, Plumlee, O. Johnson, Pendergraph and ??? Somebody from summer league?

does look like he miscounted. I don't see anyone on the summer league team that isn't already under contract that deserves more than a training camp invite. I'd say the 14th is Amundson or Fesenko with Lou the more likely choice.

I'd say based on our depth, probably one guard maybe two. Kramer or Ben Hansbrough from our summer league team could be fighting for the #3 PG spot and perhaps Vaden could be in the mix as well.

Personally, I expect Hansbrough to have a Croshere type of year going into his contract and they send West packing come seasons end if not the trade deadline.

I wouldn't be surprised to see AJ Price return at the veterans minimum either. Ben Hansbrough may be worth a gamble as well. It seems that 6 bigs is enough bigs so I'd say that Amundson and Fesenko are looking for new teams. It's time to sign at least one more guard.

we renounced AJ so don't look for him to come back. we haven't renounced Lou, Fes, or Leandro so they remain possibilities. I hoped to have someone ask that question at today's presser but they signed Roy and George officially today and turned the presser into an announcement of that rather than the trade and signings. maybe Wells will be able to ask about the other issues informally.

we haven't renounced Lou, Fes, or Leandro so they remain possibilities..

After trading Collison and Jones for Mahinmi, I would doubt it if the Pacers were even considering resigning Lou or Fes. And with the drafting of Orlando Johnson and acquiring Augustin, I would also doubt the re-signing of him.

If they do decide to make a move now, it would be Hansbrough and (hopefully) Pendergraph as a throw-in. If they wait until the deadline, it's possible that they move David West, although I doubt it.

Based on watching today's press conference and the interviews afterward, here's how I see the depth chart without listing anyone in more than one spot.

1) Hill, Augustin
2) George, Stephenson, O Johnson
3) Granger, Green
4) West, Hansbrough, Plumlee
5) Hibbert, Mahinmi, Pendergraph


If you want to change this list by moving Johnson to 1, Plumlee to 5, or Pendergraph to 4, I wouldn't argue. Some would list Plumlee ahead of Hansbrough but I'm not ready to put a rookie that high. Besides I think part of Hansbrough's problem last year was not having a true center to play next too. I think Tyler will be better with Ian or Miles in the middle. Lou gave us much more than we expected but if he comes back it will be too compete at the 4 not the 5.

Last year the active roster size was increased from 12 to 13 early in the year. I checked the CBA FAQ and it says there is a possibility the 13 number would be made permanent this year. If 13 is the number, this whole list could be active. If 12 is the number, Pendergraph or Johnson would be inactive depending upon match-ups and injuries.

I'd be more comfortable if we could add another veteran point guard although Stephenson can be a third point guard in a pinch and O Johnson can probably convert to one over time as well.

Overall It does look as if the bench is better. Augustin; Green; and Stephenson should provide more scoring and explosive plays than last seasons duo of Collison; Barbosa; and Jones. No one really stands out to me as a lockdown defender. Hopefully Hans gets more consistent with his scoring and improves his defense. Mahinmi seems to have plenty of ppl writing about his inability to rebound. I hope that they are wrong. There should be plenty of exciting offensive basketball plays; hopefully the defense will be just as potent without leading the league in fouls.

Mahinmi is being knocked for not being a shot blocker or a rebounder. the must think he's better than Fes but Fes showed me more than Pendergraph.

There is no way Hansbrough performs to the point that West gets traded. I do expect Tyler to be better this year. I expect him to realize he is a rotation player, that he is at best a 4th scoring option and that means he has to defend and rebound better. His offensive game needs to evolve to where his first impulse is to pass rather than look to drive. If he moves in this direction he can be a contributor on a good team.

It's not that Hansbrough will ever outplay West, the only reason that the Pacers would get rid of West would be to save the salary cap space that he will be demanding after this year. West will want more than the Pacers are comfortable to offer to a player of his age, and therefore the Pacers would move him to bring in a younger, less demanding forward that doesn't want as much money.

don't put the cart before the horse. West was reasonable with this contract and should be reasonable with the next one. the goal here is to win a championship and he's a big part of the puzzle. we expect everyone to improve. West will be past his knee issues. Hibbert and George will be another year older. Granger will start the year understanding he no longer has to force things. Hill will be totally dedicated to the point guard slot. and the second unit is almost all new. with Rose out most of the year, we have a very good chance of winning the central and being seeded 1, 2 with Miami. I know that is a best case scenario but if we achieve that I can't see West not getting his due. in fact, if I were Walsh and Pritchard, I'd be negotiating an extension right now. it is very clear that management felt continuity was very important this year and barring a calamity I'd think we'd want to bring back all five starters next year too.

one calamity possibility would be a winning team with empty seats. Hill was right on yesterday when he said wins would be easier if the bandwagon fans who jumped on for the playoffs don't jump back off. okay, those aren't the words he used but he did stress the importance of sell outs and you know Herb will be easier to convince to keep the pocket book open if the seats are full.

where does that leave Hansbrough? I don't know. I think he's shown that he wasn't a draft blunder but he has yet to show he's worth starters money either. if what I'm finding on the internet is correct and I'm not misreading it, I think he'll get 3 this year and we have a team option at a little over 4 for the following season. he'll need to improve a lot to get a George Hill level offer after that but it could happen. we'll also need to see how Plumlee develops because I certainly can see the value in having the dirty work guy be the starting four with the scorer coming off the bench. that sure worked for Red Auerbach's championship teams.

I doubt that West expects to get a big contract considering he wanted to play for a contender just last offseason. He wouldve gone to Boston for even less than what the Pacers gave him but he felt that Indy was on the rise while Bostons window is closing. I would expect West to play for the Midlevel exception or a similar contract to the one that he has which is 10 mil per. He would probably take less to stay in Indy now considering that he said that he would like to retire a pacer. He knows that the contracts of the younger guys will get larger which would mean that the vets will have to take less money to keep the core together. I would be more concerned about keeping Granger. Its obvious that George will likely command max money in a two offseasons. The question is whether the team can max him and keep Granger happy with less money?

With Hibbert and Hill both gettting huge contracts, you can assume that Danny will expect the same. Is it possible to keep Hill, Hibbert, Granger, and George all with big contracts and still have solid bench pieces around them?

Danny is on an older contract from when the max was higher. he and Roy are probably getting very similar money and it could just stay that way.
