Re: NBA Summer League in Las Vegas (July 13 to 22)
Well, for one thing, you routinely see SL games where the most effective guy on the floor got next to zero minutes for a mediocre team during the preceding regular season. Lance Stephenson = exhibit #1.
Still, I easily understand the magnetic draw of these games where nothing is at stake in the win or loss; I've watched several hours of them myself the last few days. It's fairy tale stuff. You want to see a miracle, someone great emerge from nowhere. I remember how much I enjoyed watching Lin torch Wall 2 years ago -- even though I wanted Wall to be great. It's irresistable. The prince and the pauper, the frog and the prince.
So... I've especially enjoyed Kyle O'Quinn looking very very solid -- to think he could have been ours @#46 -- but why would we want a guy like that asks Ernie? And I've equally enjoyed Nicholson looking like a very smart and gifted player, a guy who'll play ten years in the league. Ditto Kim English.
Marshon Brooks looks good in this setting, but to me he doesn't look as good as he should. For example, he doesn't look as good as (certainly no better than) Jrue Holiday's older brother Justin -- and why isn't that kid a backup wing on an nba team? He can shoot, has great feel for the game, is a dedicated defender, and is extremely confident ("I still dominate Jrue" he said in an interview on nba tv).
Jacob Pullen has looked good too. As has Maalik Wayns. And certainly Sullinger -- but that's no surprise.
Then there's the really funny stuff where Holiday's brother is playing against Millsap's brother and John Stockton's son!

Aren't summer league games usually high scoring and guard/wing dominated? I haven't followed closely but it seems that the bigs seem to be the players exceeding expectations. Also there seem to be a good number of scores in the 80s or lower.

He played great man D on Kanter yesterday, although he was quiet on offense. Today, he just disappeared. Wasn't establishing post position, didn't call for the ball, looked scared tor receive the ball, and he was non-existent on the boards. Knight did a terrible job running the offense though for the most part and really wasn't giving anybody open looks. I hope both guys come out looking better tomorrow.
Drummond still playing like he did at UCONN a few months ago? Who woulda thought....
This kid will amount to nothing. You can't teach heart.
Dude, he's 18 y/o! In game 3, he played better (10 pts, 9 rebs, 4 blks). Looked much more aggressive on the boards and on offense, even though he kid of disappeared in the 2nd half.
But basically, you shouldn't judge what his career is going to be like off a few SL games. Everyone knew he was raw coming in. I laugh at the people who rag on him for not dominating. You don't say? He's a developing 18 y/o big.

It's not only that he's raw....he has that "Kwame" gene. He comes off as a kid who plays basketball because he's big and athletic and his parents forced him to get into it, instead of someone that plays for the love of the game. You just don't see the passion. Dwight Howard at 18, for instance, was even more raw than Drummond coming out of high school, but he still managed to impose his will physically on less talented guys. He would just bully defenders in the lane and terrorize the boards. Drummond doesn't do that...he just kind of picks and chooses when he wants to actually do something. His demeanor is so blah-zay. He needs to learn to play the game with passion.

Vesley's J in practice looks good. I saw him hit shots in shoot around this past season, I hope he can pick some spots and shoot with confidence once a guard gets him in position.

Dammit. I'm stuck in another country and didn't record the Wizards summer games. Here's to hoping you all give me great readouts!

Drummond looks alright in summer league against the Celtics. Drummond doesn't have all of Kwame's genes; he should have a more successful career than Kwame because he has better hands.

Woo Hoo! I'm a local now! Too bad I'm getting old with a 9-5 job and have to miss most of the game...

So CSN is showing it twice -- once at 4 (live) and then a replay at 7?
I've been taught all my life to value service to the weak and powerless.

NBA.com just dropped the Summer League package from 14.99 to 4.99. Good deal - a buck a game. I'm okay with that, especially as an out of towner w/o CSN.

You mean MarShon Brooks? He's another CCJ guy. Told you he sucks.
Brooks tied an Orlando SL record by scoring 34 today.

In an NBA game setting, he's not a good player. He's a ball-stopper and isn't good enough for that. Yeah he'll put up good numbers sometimes, but he's not a player that'll help you win IMO.
