Media assessment of EE extension

Post#1 » by dagger » Thu Jul 12, 2012 3:17 pm

Since we have another thread on the extension itself, I''ll change this to a media reaction thread.

Not to Jon Heyman, in the case of the Jays, it isn't proven that big FAs won't go to Toronto, ownership hasn't tried it in a few years, but if you go back further, some big FAs have gone to Toronto,

@ekoreen
.@A_Chris_Black making sense about the Jays right now. Meanwhile, EE at 9 million is appropriate.

‏@JonHeymanCBS
$27M/3 yrs was reasonable for edwin encarnacion considering .947 OPS this yr 2) difficulty luring big FAs to toronto. #jays

@ekoreen
If Jays don't pay for pitching at deadline or in offseason, either with $ or prospects, EE deal won't have proven a thing.

@Ken_Rosenthal
#BlueJays never liked idea of trading Encarnacion for prospects. But 3-year, $27M extension is a big show of faith. Streaky hitter in past

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
Like the #BlueJays decision to sign Edwin Encarnacion. His defense at 1B has improved. Money and term is reasonable.

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
Edwin Encarnacion was 2.5 months from becoming a free agent. His .947 OPS is 142 points above his career norm. #BlueJays

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
Put it this way: Encarnacion AAV: $9MM. Pujols AAV: $24MM. Is Albert more than twice as valuable as Edwin?

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
Spoke with Joey Votto recently. He raved about Edwin Encarnacion as a hitter. Since Votto is the best hitter in baseball now, good sign.

@michaelgrange
@jonmorosi Not to get all mathy only you, but Pujols' AAV ($24m) is nearly 3x EE's ($9m); 2.67 to be exact. #Jays #MLB

Keith Law mentioned in his Klaw Chat that he liked the deal for the Jays but I'm too lazy to go copy and paste the quote.

Jonah Keri's article today on Grantland was fantastic (as most of his work is).

Snakes (Philly)

Thoughts on the Encarnacion extension? I like it for Toronto.

Klaw
(1:16 PM)

I do too. Modest enough that it's not a disaster if he regresses, but offers substantial upside for the club.

Looks like Klaw learned his lesson after poo-pooing the Bautista deal a couple years ago.

Yeah because 5/65 and 3/27 are the same thing.

uhhhhh.... what? They're each signed to team friendly deals with a short term and with a team option at the end after having a breakout season with free agency around the corner. I didn't mean to imply that both Bautista and Edwin signed identical contracts. Is that what you thought I was implying?

Considering teams are paying slightly above average middle relievers in the 5 million dollar range I think we got EE at a great price. If he were a few years older I could understand the question marks but at his age and salary/years this is a solid signing with the knowledge at hand even if he falls off the map.
