You know the guy who is most panicked right now, for very good reason, is Lin's agent.

He had to have calculated that NY would match so that Lin would get his money and keep his Madison Ave visibility which easily surpassed 4 million a year while earning him a hefty chunk of his endorsement commission.

If NY does not match Houston's offer that guy is all but fired.

I'm laughing at the idea that the Garden would boo Felton. It's like some of the posters here either just started paying attention to the Knicks, or can't remember anything, since February.

Felton was a Garden favorite because he was a bulldog on defense and loved to pull on the NEW YORK of his jersey. He was a throwback to the 90s kind of guy, and the Garden crowd loves him because of that.

That was in December; by February we were so disillusioned by his play that we were indifferent to him being added to the Melo deal.

Lin would have essentially exchanged 4 million in up front contract dollars for at least treble that in off-court marketing opportunities.

Guess we played ourselves by openly celebrating the original offer Houston gave Lin...

here's another thing... everyone always felt that lin would get a larger offer than what he initially did, and the organization was still prepared to match it. so when he got a lower offer, everyone was ecstatic. but now that the offer has increased, isn't it still within our original range? this is probably what the knicks had mentally prepared themselves for all off-season.

having said that, if lin leaves, and I guess I cant rule that out, there will be a non money reason involved

New York will have to absorb that entire $14.898 million in year three, which is the same year the Knicks are already on the tab for $24.3 million for Carmelo Anthony, $23.4 million for Amar’e Stoudemire and $14.5 million for Tyson Chandler. Those four salaries alone would put New York above the salary tax threshold of $70 million this season. By then, the more punitive penalties of the new collective bargaining agreement for taxpaying teams would kick in, with teams paying $1.50 in tax for every dollar they exceed the threshold up to $5 million. Yet they're willing to pay Steve Novak and Ray Felton a combined salary of 8-9m in that year and another possible 5-6m to JR Smith. But not an additional 6m to Lin?

No way to match. Finances simply don't work due to the new CBA and the harsh luxury tax payments it brings.

Look at it this way: Even if the league did unspeakably well in the next two seasons and the luxury tax line rose from its current level of $70.3 million to $80 million in '14-'15, every player the Knicks added beyond those five would count multiples of their salaries with the tax. Even if the Knicks could add seven more players at a total salary of $10 million -- not likely -- the total cost for those players would be $25.3 million with the new tax rates factored in.

And wasn't this known once the rumors of Houston's offer came out? How come all of a sudden he's working this out? Everyone still said it was a no-brainer to match then.

In my younger days I used to run this scam with cute chicks I was dating, I would have them find the sucker in the club that will buy them a drinks and have them buy her one and she would immediatly give it to me... It's not that I couldn't buy her one, but why should I, when another guy will, it was just for fun and kicks...
