You know the guy who is most panicked right now, for very good reason, is Lin's agent.

He had to have calculated that NY would match so that Lin would get his money and keep his Madison Ave visibility which easily surpassed 4 million a year while earning him a hefty chunk of his endorsement commission.

If NY does not match Houston's offer that guy is all but fired.

The biggest issue here is that Felton still doesn't seem to have come to terms with the reality of his poor play. He's been one of, if not the least, effective players in the NBA playing 30+ minutes per night. His player efficiency rating is currently that of an average back-up point guard, not a surefire starter. His minutes and role had to be reduced. There's simply no way around it until he demonstrates he can return to being a far more effective player.[/quote]

Can't wait for this and a washed up Kidd running the show next season.

Felton was a Garden favorite because he was a bulldog on defense and loved to pull on the NEW YORK of his jersey. He was a throwback to the 90s kind of guy, and the Garden crowd loves him because of that.

That was in December; by February we were so disillusioned by his play that we were indifferent to him being added to the Melo deal.

If Lin bolts would this be worst than trading Ewing?

Lin would have essentially exchanged 4 million in up front contract dollars for at least treble that in off-court marketing opportunities.

he can't do anything now, the offer sheet has been signed

here's another thing... everyone always felt that lin would get a larger offer than what he initially did, and the organization was still prepared to match it. so when he got a lower offer, everyone was ecstatic. but now that the offer has increased, isn't it still within our original range? this is probably what the knicks had mentally prepared themselves for all off-season.

Thats so true. But doesnt the trade for Felton signal disappointment in the Lin-Rockets situation.

having said that, if lin leaves, and I guess I cant rule that out, there will be a non money reason involved

According to Felton, the Knicks told him that they're not matching the Rockets offer to Lin.

If this isn't true, Felton needs to speak up.

But that won’t be the case for the Knicks. New York will have to absorb that entire $14.898 million in year three, which is the same year the Knicks are already on the tab for $24.3 million for Carmelo Anthony, $23.4 million for Amar’e Stoudemire and $14.5 million for Tyson Chandler. Those four salaries alone would put New York above the salary tax threshold of $70 million this season. By then, the more punitive penalties of the new collective bargaining agreement for taxpaying teams would kick in, with teams paying $1.50 in tax for every dollar they exceed the threshold up to $5 million. They would pay $1.75 in tax for every dollar they exceeded the threshold by $5 million to $10 million, $2.50 per dollar from $10 million to $15 million above the threshold and $3.25 per dollar they exceeded the threshold from $15 million to $20 million. And if a team is a “repeater,” having exceeded the threshold three straight seasons, those rates would increase by a dollar per $5 million above the threshold–to $2.50, $2.75, $3.50 and $4.25 per dollar over.

Somebody wanna do the math on this?

this is kind of a sickly price to pay, even for championship especially when Lin is not irreplacable, in terms of production

The more i think about it, Dolan doesn't want to get taken for granted

Yet they're willing to pay Steve Novak and Ray Felton a combined salary of 8-9m in that year and another possible 5-6m to JR Smith. But not an additional 6m to Lin?

Also love how everyone saying Lin was only good under D'Antoni while forgetting Felton's been pretty terrible everywhere except under D'Antoni himself.

Felton was so not a PG that Larry Brown played him at SG. One problem: he also can't shoot! Do people watch basketball? In what world is Felton a superior player to guys like Lin and Dragic?

Look at it this way: Even if the league did unspeakably well in the next two seasons and the luxury tax line rose from its current level of $70.3 million to $80 million in '14-'15, every player the Knicks added beyond those five would count multiples of their salaries with the tax. Even if the Knicks could add seven more players at a total salary of $10 million -- not likely -- the total cost for those players would be $25.3 million with the new tax rates factored in.

And wasn't this known once the rumors of Houston's offer came out? How come all of a sudden he's working this out? Everyone still said it was a no-brainer to match then.

Your right, but the more i think about it, it comes down to ego, maybe even though he could afford it Dolan didn't want to look like he was always getting f*cked...

In my younger days I used to run this scam with cute chicks I was dating, I would have them find the sucker in the club that will buy them a drinks and have them buy her one and she would immediatly give it to me... It's not that I couldn't buy her one, but why should I, when another guy will, it was just for fun and kicks...

Dolan probably was tired of being that dude always buying the drinks

I don't love Lin's contract, but not matching would be a big mistake.
