Re: DC traded for Mahinmi
Just wondering, but why is Mahinmi not on the France Olympic Basketball team? There's 12 other better French basketball players then him?

He was on the team in 2008 and withdrew his name this year (see link). I suspect his free agency status had a lot to do with not wanting to risk injury, but who knows...maybe he just hates France which would be awesome.

Beaubois was asked by the Mavericks to not participate with the French team seeing how he needs time to heal from an injury he suffered two season ago. Mahinmi also will not play for his home country since he is trying to negotiate a new contract with Dallas. Furthermore, Noah is still recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in the regular season and will still need three more weeks to recover. Also, Traore injured his knee and is out indefinitely.
It is quite peculiar that two Maverick players are not participating in the London games considering Mavs owner Mark Cuban has been quite vocal against NBA players participating in Olympic/international competition. But I digress.

Re: DC traded for Mahinmi
The trade doesn't make much sense for Indy. I understand they were concerned with Collison's future with them after this year, being a backup and all, but there was no reason to get rid of him. Mahinmi was a restricted free agent, the Pacers could have signed him outright. With the Mavs bidding on Brand and possibly Scola, there is NO WAY they would've matched a 4 year 16 million dollar contract. Even if the Mavs were fiscally crazy enough to do that, the Pacers then could've worked out a trade scenario. Mahinmi is a good young player, but currently, he's a backup and isn't worth both Collison and Jones.

Re: DC traded for Mahinmi
there is an explanation online from Walsh. the bottom line is we wanted to get rid of Collison because we felt he would become a distraction after losing his starting position and we wanted to get rid of Jones to save money. Dallas had a player we wanted. Collison was a player they wanted and we didn't want. they wanted him badly enough to take on Jones money for a year. both teams are happy. essentially the two players we gave up had negative value for us so moving them was a good thing.

Re: DC traded for Mahinmi
Yeah, we did need to move Collison and Jones was probably earning too much for the playing time he got. I was just saying that the Pacers could've bided their time and tried to get a pick or two out of the trade. If they waited, the Mavs would've gotten desperate enough to throw in a pick which would've made the trade more reasonable for us.

Re: DC traded for Mahinmi
after all these years, I'm comfortable with Donny Walsh's decision making and I'm not going to second guess him just because some wag at ESPN who has never actually negotiated a trade or a contract thinks they could have done better.

I'm not a huge Chad Ford fan. The guy was the most off on draft night discussion and even mis-called a few draft picks as if they were official.
