Why? I would want someone to get them to continually improve -- to fix short comings.

Some called it negativity - and I can see why ---- I saw it as a continual push to improve. That said, there needs to be some balance between criticism and praise.

SVG did coach two of the last, what 5 MIP? But Stan was stubborn and with young talent you pigeonhole guys if you're stubborn.

He developed Redick, and started Clee as a rookie. That is just some weird myth that he didn't play rookies, he played people who he thought were ready to play.

I say he wouldn't be great for a rebuild because hes a brilliant yet cold, no nonsense sarcastic/negative coach who wants to win at all costs....not a players coach at all.

No, I agree, I think Stan should still be the coach and would love him to coach a rebuild.

And Gortat

IMO, SVG not playing young talent has become a bit of a hyperbole..

Young =/= Young talent

Guys like Harper and Orton are not NBA-ready no matter who the coach is/was..Liggins was out of the rotation because he had 2 starting quality SG's in front of him..

Stan definitely developed Redick, Anderson, Lee, Clark, and Gortat. When you are an elite team simply handing a player minutes does not always help their development. Working for your minutes can be great for your development. SVG may not have been outstanding at developing young talent, but we did not have much young talent to begin with.

For anyone getting at all depressed about our situation, may I present this classic from the Knick's boards today:

So, today's thread contains a wish that JR Smith becomes debilitated by a drug overdose and James Dolan be shot to death. Rhetoric, escalating.

Anybody else got any more brilliant ideas?

I just about laughed myself out of my chair when I read that one.

I prefer to think of it as Liggins really was only ready for small doses of playing time.

Let's not over-exaggerate JRich's performance last year :)

IMO Stan's BIGGEST flaw was the NOT developing Gortat & Howard together. We had the #1 and possibly #3 center on our team. Stan should have seen Gortat's ability and figured a way to develop them together.

Also sticking with Lewis wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long was another flaw. But in developing Rookies, it was due to Stan's inability to develop Gortat and Howard together hurt us in so many ways...too numerous to count. I doubt Gortat would have been traded if Stan took the time to show him as an integral part to the Magic.

The only time I was upset about SVG playing a vet over a youngin'/rookie was Duhon v Ish. Not that Ish would have made that much of a difference, it's because Duhon was that bad.

Problem is Gortat is a legit starting center. Putting him at the 4 next to Dwight worked in small doses, but Gortat's abilities were being wasted here behind Dwight, and he just won't get that much playing time behind the best center in the league.

The crime is Otis getting completely fleeced in that trade with Phx.

Playing Duhon so much is the only gripe I have ever had with Stan, but even then he knows/sees more than I do, but godamn Duhon is so frustrating.

Why would you want a coach that deliberately sabotages the team?

I understand wanting to see someone other than Duhon, I do. But Ish Smith isn't the answer and never will be. Yes, I am speaking about him not being the answer to the BACKUP PG role.

I have said it hundreds of times. Forcing young players to ride and bench, gain a chip on their shoulder, improve their game and earn their minutes is one of the very best qualities of Stan Van Gundy. JJ Redick and Ryan Anderson owe him A LOT of money...

Gortat + Dwight as a twin towers lineup didn't work. In proper doses it made for a nice 5 minute change up routine, but that wasn't a 30 minutes a night lineup. Gortat's lack of playing time in Orlando was due to Dwight's greatness, not Stan's rotations. As someone else already mentioned the only negative feelings I have towards the Gortat / Orlando relationship was how Otis Smith chose to end it. Everyone knew he would be traded mid season, but no one believed we would get so little in return. Ridding yourselves of Vince Carter's contract only goes so far for a team locked into so many big, long term contracts.
