OJ MAYO in Dallas

Post#1 » by Tricky_Kid » Tue Jul 17, 2012 4:03 am

"The Dallas Mavericks and shooting guard O.J. Mayo have agreed to a multiyear deal, according to a source with knowledge of the situation" source Jeff Caplan ESPN

This is bad news. Who has left? I will be pissed if Suns FO will sign with Lee or with Brown.

Interesting. We could have given him many more opportunities since we have no go-to options. Who knows? Maybe Cuban made him a deal he couldn't refuse. Not bitter either case.

You are missing out the entire conversation about this in the Offseason thread. The last 6 pages are dedicated to Mayo and our reported 5 year offer to Brown.

Honestly, im fine if its under $3M a year and he is in the backup SG role. Now Brown as our starting SG is a different story.

Stil... I think You forgot about his last season. His stats are fine but lies a little bit. He is egoistic, dumb guy who think He is Kobe and this pissed me most. He can? rarely pass the ball but mostly won't see other guys and if he get the ball something in his mind is telling him "shoot no mather of...".
We need to sign decent SG maybe not this year but giving him long term contract is HUGE mistake in my opinion.

It was reported that OJ wanted 8 mil per year from us and we wouldn't give him that much. Dallas on the other hand only had 4 mil to spend on him so unless there was a sign in trade or a ridiculous back loaded contract it seems as if he went to Dallas on the cheap.

Too bad, I thought he and Goran's games would compliment each others.

He signed 9m$/2y with the second year being a Player Option.

9/2 for Mayo? And we are signing Michael freaking Beasley to a 18/3 year deal? Talking about a good offseason.

I'm not sure the Suns were able to offer Mayo more than what he played for at USC.

According to this article Mayo turned down offer from the Phoenix Suns that was worth between $9 million-$10 million.

Suns did not make an offer to Mayo. He went in demanding $8-10 MM and the Suns said no.

John Gambadoro ‏@Gambo620
OJ Mayo came to town but Suns made no contract offer. He wants 8 mill + a year and for Phx to be interested that price has to come down.

@jn79123 Came to town, price right now is too high, Suns did not make an offer, waiting to see if price comes down

Jeremy Paulison ‏@thereal_Jpeezy
@Gambo620 During Dbacks rain delay, i heard u say Phx's offer 2 Mayo was 5-6 mil per yr... Any chance he takes that, or does he want 7-8?

@thereal_Jpeezy I said that is what Phoenix would want to pay him 5-6 mill a year, he wants more

Take it for what it is worth as it comes from Gambadoro. But this is one instance where I tend to believe him.

As i explained in another posting:

Classic example of overplaying your hand, ending up with nothing and then trying to save face. When Mayo came to Phoenix, he and his agent knew that the Hornets would match Gordon's offer. They knew the Suns would have significant cap space. They expected the Suns to have some desperation because they had lost out on the player they really wanted. Mayo and his agent thought all the stars were aligned so that Mayo could gain an above - market contract with the Suns so they made an exorbitant demand ($8-10MM) that far exceeded the market value for his services and his level of accomplishment. The Suns declined and likely did not make an offer, but likely told Mayo and his agent/business manager that they might be interested in him for about half of what his demand was. Mayo and his agent left without an offer and with their tail between their legs. They signed in Dallas for what appears to be the market value for his services and now want to massage their egos by saying they left big $$ on the table, but did not want to play for a team that will lose 60 games.

This is not the way for an agent to watch out for his client's interests. It is childish and immature and designed to do nothing more than to try to save face. Suns fans should be thankful that Babby, Sarver, and Blanks did not fall into desperation mode and do another Childress or Turkey-Glue deal.
