I don't think some people realize what we're losing here
I'm making a new thread to make this clear, because I see people over and over again making the same anti-Lin argument that he only played a few games, you can't justify giving him a contract that big based on that sample size, etc. What I think people are failing to realize is that Jeremy Lin's run wasn't just good, it was historically special. To make it clear:
-Lin scored more points in his first three, four, and five starts than any player in NBA history since the merger
-Lin was the first player in the NBA history to score 20 points with seven assists in each of his first four starts
-Lin was the first Knick to EVER average 18 PPG and 7 APG in his first 25 NBA starts
-Lin was the youngest player in NBA history to average at least 25 points and eight assists over a five-game span
That's the player we're letting walk away for absolutely nothing tonight. No cap room, no picks, no Chris Paul, nothing. On a team whose only under-25 player just blew out his knee. And how any Knick fan could agree with that decision blows my mind. The luxury tax is not your money, it is the money of a billionaire who made millions off Lin last year and now is letting a petty vendetta get in the way of a clear-cut no-brainer basketball decision. Especially with the stretch clause, there is no simply excuse - if Lin was a bust, Dolan could have avoided the luxury tax payment by waiving him, essentially making his contract 5/25--or less than he gave Jerome James. Even with the poison pill, Omir Asik is going to be making the same amount of money ($8 M a year). So is Goran Dragic. Michael Beasley's making $9 M. Nicholas Batum's making $10 M. Kris Humphries $12 M. Brook Lopez $15. Compared to those, Lin's contract was a bargain.
And even if you don't think Lin's the real deal, how could you not support bringing him back just to have another option? Felton's PER for PGs was 43rd last year. Kidd's was 47th. That's not even a good backup. (Lin's was 10th). What happens if Felton, who was the biggest cancer in the game last year and got benched for JAMAL CRAWFORD of all people, is that player again? What happens if Kidd continues to get more and more washed up? The guy averaged 5 and 5 last year. Then what? We're stuck. Completely stuck with no chance to win a championship over a three year stretch, with no ability to S & T, very few draft picks, and only the mini-MLE. How could you not just want Lin back as another option in case things don't go well, as happened with Bibby and Douglas last year? How was this even a difficult decision, at all? We're not getting a sure thing, like we would have had with Nash. We're going with two PGs who played like backups last year and a complete unknown in Prigioni, while letting someone with enormous potential walk.
Yes, Lin turned the ball over a lot last year. But he was basically a rookie! 23 years old! And now he would've had the chance to get even better by learning from one of the best ever. Sure, he was bad against Miami. He was exhausted from the craziest run as any athlete has ever experienced when he was the focus of the other team's gameplan. You know who else was bad against Miami? Our entire team, who got dominated by them in a five-game series and did nothing this offseason to significantly increase their chances of beating them. The Heat shut down a lot of people this year; they were the best defensive team in the league by a wide margin. I don't see Thunder fans wanting Harden out because he had a few bad games against them. And how many young players, how many rookies have the confidence to take this type of shot, let alone hit it? It's not something that comes along every day.

Sorry for the rant. It's just depressing that the Knicks are literally giving away someone this talented, basically killing any chance they have of being more than a first-round exit for the next three years. If Lin was great, we really could've won a title. If he wasn't, it was two years and then a giant expiring. There was no risk. But so much upside. And if Lin goes to Houston and does become a superstar, there's no going back. He'll be there the rest of his career. They're so lucky they got a second chance at that possibility. Jeremy Lin was a gift from the basketball gods, and so was the win in the birds rights case. And we're just going to throw those gifts away. For absolutely nothing. It's just inexcusable.

Ballboy, please. He only signed one offer sheet from Houston. Don't make up facts.

"The Post reported on its back page Saturday the Knicks were furious the Rockets changed the offer sheet for Lin and upgraded it to a $25 million guarantee over three years, according to a source. The Knicks were bitter because they told Lin immediately the club would match the original offer and Lin apparently shared the information with the Rockets. Lin and Houston then plotted to redo it.
Lin secretly flew into Las Vegas without informing the Knicks to renegotiate the contract and sign it."

Stop defending, and just accept he did that. Regardless if he had the right to do it, it was shady. This isn't about money. Lin spurned the front office with his actions. That's why he's not coming back.
Well, that changes everything then, doesn't it? It makes the decision even worse because it's based on Dolan being a tool than actually building a successful team with talented players.
If they thought they couldn't replace him, they would bring him back despite it. That clearly wasn't the case. Not disrespecting the franchise is a big deal.
Why do you keep quoting Marc Berman?
Is that fool, whose biggest breaking story was Pablo Prigioni to the Knicks, supposed to have the scoop over more decorated reporters who never reported such a thing?
I like how you want to end the argument and get me to agree with you by saying "just accept it". Like you accept everything Berman and the Post write, correct?

Tabloids are more reliable than the NY Post. Anyone that lives in NYC knows that.

JR has bad reputation even melo did not want him here ....
Carmelo Anthony Did Not Want J.R. Smith On The Knicks
J.R. Smith has made quite the impression since signing with the Knicks last month. He's shooting 37 percent from the field and has already been fined $25,000 for tweeting a picture of the "girl with the biggest ass ever." But it's not like the Knicks weren't warned. The New York Post reports that Carmelo Anthony advised against signing Smith:
A couple of weeks before the signing, Anthony was asked if the Knicks should sign his former teammate who has a thuggish reputation. Anthony and Smith share the same agent, Leon Rose.
"If it happens, it happens and I'll be happy," Anthony said publicly before the signing.
But, according to the source, Anthony was not gung-ho and was "hurt'' Knicks upper management tossed his advice out the window.

He signed only 1, AFTER asking them to renegotiate it once he learned knicks were matching anything. Shady move

Again, if Lin had nothing to do with the redoing of the contract, why would the Knicks hesitate to match? Why wouldn't Dolan be so annoyed that the Rockets "forced" Lin back into a room and shoved money down his throat, that he'd match it just to puff his chest out?
I highly doubt Lin, or Lin's new agent, had nothing to do with the contract being changed.

Every success Lin has in Houston will haunt this franchise forever.

This is not only an angry post. I'm quite serious. This puts a hex on the franchise. Dolan is a curse and this is his legacy statement. It will never be forgotten.
I understand but I'm not that disappointed. I've been against the direction of the team for the past 18 months and evern since Donnie Walsh was forced out I knew Dolan was slowly derailing the team. I've known for a long time Dolan was the worst owner in the NBA but 18 months ago I finally came to terms with the fact the Knicks would probably not win a championship on Dolan's watch.
For me it's just another blunder. I wanted us to match Lin's offer sheet but the problem goes way beyond Lin. I could understand no matching Lin if the team still had flexibility to acquire a better player down the line via free agency or trade or nba draft. It's just history repeating itself : no draft picks, youth for veterans, expiring contracts for longer contracts, capped out, no flexibility and no plan. The Knicks never learn from their past mistakes. It's insane to have such a high payroll and so little flexibility for a team that only won one playoff game the past two seasons and little room for improvement with only veterans. At best only Melo can become a better player and MVP candidate, Amare, Tyson, Kidd, Camby and the rest can only decline. For me the strategy was flawed from the start and I knew the team would run out of gas (ammos to reach the next level).
As always I will root for the team to win but I don't expect much. It's been like that for a long time (with the exception of the 2008-2011 era where I had hope we would finally build the team the right way with competence and patience (instead of trying to make the playoffs at all costs).
Yeah, I lost what little faith I had after Donnie was undermined. Really the only hope for this organization is if the Rangers win a championship and Dolan has a new favourite toy to play with.
I'm still disappointed that they would throw away talent they essentially got for free, and use such BS excuses as claiming it's about the money when they have made far more expensive mistakes before, but I don't expect much from Dolan and the scum he surrounds himself with.
I'm impressed people still eat up whatever this organization says though.

Because the terms of the contract were changed to that of a $50 million luxury tax 3 years from now? But no, that's not logical at all. Let's argue hearsay from Marc Berman instead!
What is this, high school? Match contracts to "puff your chest"? Seriously? This is millions of dollars we're talking about here.
