I see Val having a 12/8 season he's going to struggle with fouls.

If you watched Jonas play at all you know that he has a lot of work to do before he can bang around with NBA bigs in the NBA game. He has a ton of potential - a ton - but he still has a way to go on realizing on that potential. Also, Raps have Bargs, Amir, Ed and Gray that will be eating into those minutes - there are only 96 minutes for bigs in an NBA game to spread around. Do the math.

Very well-put. I know we're all excited, but I hope people keep their expectations in check. Jonas still has a long way to go.

I'm expecting more on the lines of 9 and 7, but you have to understand that Jonas has a fairly unprecedented resume for a 20 year old European player. He's done things nobody his age has done before in Europe, INCLUDING Pau Gasol.

So he's not just some project, he has a lot of cred, even if it hasn't been tested in the NBA yet. He comes with a lot more going for him than your typical ordinary rookie big. Ed Davis came in and averaged 7 and 7 in his first year. I'm fairly confident that Val's talent level is significantly higher than Ed's already so I don't see how it's TOTALLY out of the realm of possibility that he might average something like 8 rpg. Plus even though we have a rotation of bigs, they are mostly PFs and few of them are competent centres.

I'm more concerned about fatigue than foul trouble actually. He's going to be gassed come training camp. He may already be gassed going into the Olympics. That's an injury threat.

Ed Davis had 6/6 actually. So is Ed Davis the main competitor for JV? If so, I think JV has very good chances to become a starting 5 player. I was following JV all season and I'm watching Ed Davis - JV is better. Off course, at some aspects Ed Davis might have advantage, but overall JV looks like way stronger player already.

Nope. That was Ed last year. I'm talking about Ed's first year.

I think Jonas will be a very good offensive threat for 2 reasons Lowry & Bargs between the two he will get a lot of easy baskets plus get fouled 3 or 4 times a game if he plays 25 minutes, See 10+ ppg at 25 minutes 6+ rpg.

I would potentially compare his rookie season to what Ed Davis put up.

7.7 PTS
7.1 RBS
1.0 BLK
2.89 PF
24.6 MPG

Those are Ed's rookie statistics. Hopefully Val can put up better numbers but I don't know how well/quickly Jonas will adjust to living in a new country and adjusting to the NBA game. If his transition goes smoothly then I can see him putting up 12 points and 8-9 boards.

What you guys forget is that what he brings to the team are not just his personal stats. His personal stats are irrelevant during the first season. So, I would not be too stat-obsessed - 11/7 should do it, but if it is only 8/5, it is not a tragedy. Since NBA centers are more like Sumo players, his stats are directly dependent on the number of consumed hamburgers (I mean poutine stuff) before the start of the season.

Its possible if he gets the minutes and puts on some size. He is competing for rebounds with Bargs no Reggie Evans so nothing is impossible lol...

I'd say he might get more points because he can make free throws. I think the new country thing is a bit over-rated. Vilnius played in some of the armpits of Europe. Compared to what he's used to, travelling on jets with all business class charters and staying at five star hotels will be a pleasant and quick adjustment.

Valanciunas received a two-year deal, with two team option years.

Two team option years? Is this normal... it's usually one right? What's the deal with the two years?

Image

How do these #s compare with other rookies drafted similarly? There are minor differences right regarding payscale? That last year is a nice player option if (when  ) he gets there...

Also wonder if he had to contribute any of his salary to the buyout. If not he's going make 30k more than Derozan lol

^OT: Hard to believe Jose is paid more than Andrea....

I think Jonas will do just fine and will be good defensively right off of the bat, might surprise us offensively.

10-14 ppg
7-9 rpg

20-25 mpg

^^Lol those stats would make him ROY. I think everyone has too high an expectations when it comes to Val. He's incredibly talented, but let's tone down the expectations please he's still really young.

ETA: I'm really excited about the olympics though. Hopefully they match him up against the brow when they play the USA.
