The incident occurred at a cinema showing the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, a police official told NBC News.

Hayden Miller told Denver's 9News he was in an adjoining cinema when he heard "10-20 shots" and "small explosions".

"We heard people screaming," Mr Miller said.

he said a voice then came over the PA system and "told us to get out".

"Everyone was running, screaming," he said.

One suspect was in custody, police said. It was unclear whether other suspects were involved.

The injured were being transported to three local hospitals.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions.

KOA reports that a figure in a gas mask had opened fire at the showing in a mall in the suburb of Aurora and set off a smoke or tear gas bomb.

The bomb squad is also on the scene.

Aurora, a suburb of Denver, is not far from Littleton, scene of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 that claimed 13 lives.

Terrible. Are we now at the point where we have to install metal detectors at movie theaters? Amazing!

So sick the way humanity is turning. People disgust me. My condolences to the families of those that were affected. You shouldn't have to worry about dying when you go to the movies. I'm so appalled.

Agreed with everything here.

I wouldn't be surprised in a few years if people stop going to movie theaters completely, considering all of the equipment/sound systems in peoples homes. Some people have a theater in their own house right now. People can just go out, buy The Avengers or whatever on Blu Ray, watch it and enjoy it like you're at a movie theater, except without having to worry about screaming children/people who are drunk/idiot's like the shooter[s]. I only go out to the movies with friend's now, and most of the time we just go to one of each other's houses and watch a movie or two there. Can't tell you the last time I went to a movie alone and had a good time

I was about to go watch this movie.

This is insane.

Maybe I overlooked it, but did it say why this guy opened fire on 50 people?

Makes you feel sad. People just went to go see a movie...

Hmm, unfortunately guess what? Now I see that the damn murderer wasn't even IN the theater as a customer---he came from outside and kicked down the emergency door. So a metal detector wouldn't have even worked.

The suspect, believed to be the lone gunman, is in police custody. KUSA reports that the suspect kicked down an emergency door at the theater, threw in some type of a smoke bomb and when moviegoers started to run, he began shooting.
