I think Diebler may find a spot on an NBA roster some day

I think he can be an elite 3 point shooter, even if its just as an end of the bench guy

the guy shot over 50% from 3 his final year at Ohio State and again in Europe last season.... he's as good of a pure 3 point shooter as there is.... obviously he hasnt proven he can do it in the NBA, but the ability is there

if you can do 1 thing at an A+ quality, you can probably find a spot on an NBA roster.... Diebler has that potential as a 3 point shooter

Yeah he certainly seems to be an ELITE shooter. He has good height and decent athleticism. I don't see why he can't be your 8th man in an 8 or 9 man rotation. He basically appears to be a SG version of Steve Novak. Though I never saw him play, I wouldn't mind him on the roster.

All the greatest shooters or even just NBA rotational 3pt specialist have always seemed to be the best/1st option on their College team.

JJ Redick
Salim Stourdmire
Seth Curry
Jimmer Fredette
Chris Lofton
Adam Morrison
Kyle Korver(This dude was so beast!)
Steve Novak
Jason Kapono
Luke Jackson
Steve Kerr
Reggie Miller

Most I can remember at the moment(added Miller & Kerr just cause)

Point is too many to name, few are stars, some are rotational players, and a lot just didnt make it on the next level... BUT All those guys were the BEST on their team.

Diebler was always like 5-6th best on all the Buckeye teams... 4th at best.

When you play with Koufos, Evan Turner, & Sulliger you gets LOTS of open looks, all his shots were either wide open or defender running at him late. Yea he can hit open shots. Those Buckeye teams were also massive in size so he usually had the smallest guy guard him.

Now I haven't seen Diebler in over a year unless you count last week in SL... when I didnt even notice he was on the floor til he clanked a shot... but maybe he is better than I remember.

But I doubt it, and I doubt he makes it on the Rockets.

Hoopshype "salaries" and I think shamsports.com is considered the most accurate.

Yeah I know about Hoopshype, but it's not very good with updates... I'll try Shamsports though.

Steve Kerr averaged 11 ppg in college.

We're not looking for a first round-graded player (like most of the players you listed), we're looking for a guy to hit threes and Diebler can do that. He's a GOOD shooter, it's the other parts of his game that are debatable.

I guess the question is: how could being a first option help to gain experience at being a fifth option?

If anything, it seems to me like it'd hurt it.

Yea if you include his underclassman years... back then everyone stayed in school and for him to to get 22 min a game is huge.

Junior year he avg 14pt a game and again one of the best players on those teams. He also avg 9.2 ppg for Team USA in 1986... one of the top scorers...
If Team USA today was comprised of just college players, Diebler wouldn't make it if they had 5 teams.

Probably has something to do with great players being able to play in any role, they know the game and are well coached.

IIRC wasn't a certain Shane Battier your fav rocket not to long ago? Absolutely amazing college player one of the best EVER... role player in the NBA.

Ryan Bowen
Bruce Bowen
Mark Madsen
Nick Collison
Mike Miller
Chase Budinger
Anyone from 04 or 05 UCONN team, aside from Okafor.
Redick
Joe Smith

The list is never ending.

If anyone can find one collegiate player who was a 5th option on a his NCAA team and also a 5th... hell rotational player on his NBA. I'll mail you a homemade baked cookie!

24 hour deadline from this post

hint: try UNLV, Duke, MICH, The Ohio St. University

Thing is 5th option in college is going up against normal/average bball players...
5th option in NBA is being guarded by, great College players.

Especially when said player is a Shooter the get accustomed to running like crazy of screens, schemes set up to stop them and still drain it... Diebler is accustomed to... running to 3pt line wait for ball... hit open shot... not gonna happen in NBA, guys are bigger quicker... Hell Novak is like a 12th man in his NBA career, but a star on his Marquette team and took him what half a decade to get where he is now.

Assuming we go to war with roster as is....

Lin/livingston?/douglas?
Martin/lamb
Parsons/morris?/jones?
Patterson/white?/jones?
Asik/motiejunas

I think our starting 5 is more or less set. Yes i completely expect pat pat to start for us.

Questions remaining...

Who will be our backup pg?
Who will be our backup sf?
When will we trade martin?
Which of the 4 rookie will be our annual viper representative? My money goes to either white or jones. Maybe both.

Z3Snap, I have someone in mind.

Jacque Vaughn was the fourth scoring option behind Lafrentz, Scot Pollard, Paul Pierce. He played backup for the Spurs for a few years.

And there is Billy Thomas

Kendall Marshall was the 5th option at UNC. Too early to say if he'll be a rotational player in the NBA but he better be as the 13th overall pick.
I'm sure there are other cases of point guards who scored little but passed a lot.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

You've definitely got a point. I hadn't really thought of that one.

What I was thinking of though was not the list of guys you showed - because don't get me wrong, I know that guys CAN transition between the roles - but the guys you didn't show.
I was wondering why they don't make it, how many don't make it, why don't they make it, etc? Do they not have sufficient skill? To what degree does politics play into getting a job in the NBA over skill and ability? Are they not able to adapt? What about guys who aren't willing to acknowledge their place in the world and take a backseat? Are they just lacking some elite or very good skill in favor of a broader skillset that works in college but not in the pros?

I was looking at the adapt question and presuming that it was fairly common, but without any kind of numbers, or in-depth knowledge of why guys get drafted, why they don't, and why they aren't able to take off and/or fall out of the league... my statement was admittedly just pulling a bunch of guesswork out of thin air. Given how alpha-oriented the league is, I have a hunch that a lot of guys aren't willing to make the necessary modifications required for them to gain and keep their jobs.

Note: I don't think it's my PHONE that's the problem with not being able to post on realgm, I think it's this site. I'm getting the same issue in IE that I get from my droid, it's just easier to deal with from my PC.

6th man off the bench at KU, never started, 3 pt specialist.

He finally cracked rotation and made the playoff roster for the Cavs in 2008. Mostly a bit player though:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Thomas

Really, really nice pick! Don't even remember him. Those playoff game minutes are a big plus... but he just didn't get enough games or minutes for me to consider him a rotational player.

Not even close
Marshall was the most talked about guy in March! As the best PG in the country.
The most important if not best player on that UNC team.

This is gonna sound odd, but Jones, Lamb & Teague took the most shots on that team, Davis/MKG didnt really have many plays ran for them.
I doubt you could find anyone who could label the players on that team 2-5... as after Davis who the hell knows who is the best.

Darius Miller on that team would fit more of the role im talking about.

but even if you go with darius miller he looks to have a shot at being a rotational player

we shall see in the next few years

1st switch to "Google Chrome" so much better than IE. I've also wonder if I should get that "tapa-talk?" for my phone cause sometime it can be a pain on my phone.

We would need so much more background info though to properly analyze the issue.
But yea it is a great example of "Nature vs Nuture"

I too have wondered about why some of these guys transition poorly. Johnny Flynn type players for example.
I would assume coaching aspect plays a big role in success. Some coaches would honestly tell player this is what I see you as in the pros, while others would just say no need to learn change anything cause you are dominating for me. Is Melo the only player from Syracuse to play at the same level he did in college?

Players like Adam Morrison I assume, is purely just a lack of confidence once they get in the pros. The ability is all there, they are given the chance... yet they lack confidence in themselves, things are different I guess when you get to your dream.

I know guys like Dwayne Wade have been in different roles all throughout their basketball life's. They learn to succeed in each role, and get great coaching. Usually over looked when picking a school, but as long as they have the size they tend to make it, in what ever role they get. Jordan falls into this category, and so does someone like Novak.

But yea the guys who have always been the best, tend to either completely wash out, or be really good but not quite as great as they should, not always the case though. Steve Francis, McGrady, LeBron, Marbury, Shaq, Kobe etc...

Yea I saw your point its just that team is more like:
1
2a
2b
2c
2d
Darius Miller

I mean its just crazy to see a team of underclassmen dominate like that but its becoming more prevalent since Mich first did it.
