I think Orlando should suspend Dwight for detrimental conduct to the team. I don't think he should play for the Magic this year. He's ruining their reputation, and rendering himself nearly untradeable at the same time.

This is stupid assumption and equally stupid idea. You cant suspend a guy for being wishy washy and I can bet 90 percent of the stories and flip flopping have been created by the media. The only statement he made himself is that he wanted a trade after all the SVG drama and how he felt the team treated him when he got hurt. Not defending the way he handled it but dont act like the Magic's rep isnt already bad. Years of losing top 5 players, overpaying glorified role players and failure to build a serious team around its franchise player even though he got them to the Finals...

Tony Mejia:

No, I don't think it's a coincidence Jacque Vaughn missed tonight's Spurs Summer League game. Expect him to be the next Orlando Magic coach.

Trade idea Simmons put out therein his latest column

Orlando gets three expiring contracts (Kevin Martin, Josh McRoberts, Andrew Goudelock), two rookies (Jeremy Lamb and Royce White) and two 2013 no. 1s (Toronto and Houston). L.A. gets Howard and Turkoglu. Houston gets Bynum, Glen Davis, Jason Richardson and Steve Blake. So Orlando chops $22-24 million in 2012-13 salary (plus the 2014 and 2015 savings), Houston adds about $20 million, and the Lakers add $7.5 million (plus tax penalties).

I'd do that deal in a heartbeat :D

It's not a stupid idea, I will defend the idea. The idea is to keep him from suiting up because if he suits up the Magic will win a lot of games. We know he's leaving, he's made no secret of that. The team needs a good draft pick. If there was any chance he'd sign, i'd be all for letting him play. But I just don't see a chance anymore.

They also could not suspend him and just not play him coaches decision I guess. I have a feeling the union might sue over that though.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=corleeh

If you switch in Waiters and take out Thompson and maybe Eyenga for Ebanks and consider that Cleveland would give Orl its own 2013 1st and the Kings 1st rd they own and maybe future picks this is a good deal financially for Orlando and rebuilding wise. This roster ensures Orl is a lottery team that will have 3 1st rd picks with atleast 2 of them guaranteed to be lottery picks and the 3rd based on Clevelands performance. Also the 4 expiring contracts they get.

Doesn't Cleveland still want a guarantee from Bynum

No team is going to get an extension, the GM's know this its the media that hasnt caught on to players not going to do extensions over resigning as a FA. Im sure if he gives them the assurance that he will resign for the 5 year deal at the max Cleveland will be fine but its really all on Orlando at this point.

Correct. the CBA prohibits the players from promising these contracts. If they found out Howard promised to resign with LA as a FA THEY could easily nix the deal

My opinion? Hennigan needs to focus more on acquiring assets in any deal and less on ditching contracts. There is not as much to be gained financially as it would seem.

1) Baby and J-Rich could conceivably turn into tradable assets on their own. They are not THAT overpaid (esp. BBD), and their deals aren't THAT long. Both of them as starters in a Dwight-less environment could very well put up numbers that another team would trade for to fill a gap or make up for an injury during the year.

2) We have to reach the minimum salary threshold anyway (90% of cap, I think?) so it is not like he is gonna save the owner a bunch of cash...we're gonna be paying SOMEBODY that money regardless.

3) It is in the team's best interest to suck as badly as possible for at LEAST the next two years, and how better to do that then to have Hedo and Duhon around? If we start picking up above-average players in FA or salary dumps then we are just gonna end up in draft limbo hell instead of with prime lottery picks.

Now if someone could just explain the whole 3/$25 for Jameer thing to me...

Howard and Bynum not signing extentions

Magic not going to get much offers...

best deal is accept rockets package of many draft picks.... and send bad contracts out....

The Rockets arent going to do that for Howard unless they know they have a chance of resigning him after the season. The best thing they can do is make a play for Bynum and facilitate a 3way trade. Bynum is more likely to resign in Houston due to him not being concerned with a large market.

So far, HOU is the only team that has actually ponied up a package that won't make Hennigan look like a complete moron. I mean, seriously? A not-even-expiring Varejo, SAC pick that is so heavily protected it has a 0% chance of turning into a top 10 pick (probably turn into a 2nd in 2017 given SAC incompetence), and some super late 1sts? An expiring Bynum? Brook Lopez's horrendous contract plus a package of late 1sts? If you have to take Brook Lopez's horrendous contract that would be worse than letting Howard walk for nothing.

There is good reason that every single other offer Hennigan is getting sucks ass:

HOWARD SCREWED YOU.

HOU is not going to up their offer. A package of TOR pick plus DAL pick and taking on JRich already beats what everybody else is offering. Quite frankly I am surprised HOU is even offering that much. Even the Bobcats and the Kings are smart enough not to offer that much to inherit the Dwightmare.

Do we really want to tank and get lucky with a superstar in the making with a #1 pick? Why, so after 4-5 years they can also bolt to LA or NY or Miami? No thanks. I'd take a deal like Houstons and build a team based around really good team players like the Pistons of several years ago, a bunch of stars but no real superstar. I don't think we can deal with another #1 pick giving us more Dwight drama.

A straight up deal with Houston isnt likely because its very unlikely they will be able to retain him. If a deal with Houston happens it will probably be a 3 way with LA. Anyway it goes due to Dwight unwillingness to resign with any ol team the Magic are pretty limited to where they can trade him. The best thing they can do is get rid of bad contracts, take in expiring and picks. Saw a tweet that made plenty of sense. If Orlando wants the best player they take Bynum, the want young talent and picks go with Houston, want a mixture of picks and cap relief do a 3 team trade with both. Going forward the best thing for them to do is get cap relief and picks. They could potentially have 2 guaranteed lottery picks and a 3rd possible and future picks along with cap room to do serious rebuilding after the 12-13 season.

Houston would likely be ok dealing for D12 straight up, because they know they could flip him to the Lakers at the deadline for Bynum if it looks like things aren't going to work out.

That would make little to no sense. Playing out 3/4 of the year and then trading him? They wont know if he will resign until the off season. No player of that magnitude is going to sign an extension so they will never have assurance they will keep him. The only team that has that kind of assurance is LA due to them not being a team in rebuild mode and being in a city that comes with a lot of off the court financial advantages. Which is one of the big reasons why he wanted to leave in the first place.

Dwight wants to play the season out with the Magic and be the NBA center of attention for another year ... it's why his agent now says he will explore FA in 2013.
Also, the Magic have never intended to really trade Dwight ... they will never do that, it's all a show.
Where this leads to probably a 50/50 chance he resigns with the Magic. Alot will depend on how well Dwight and Jaque Vaughn mesh.
