Advertisements To Appear On Game Uniforms In 13-14

The NBA Board of Governors approved the inclusion of advertisements on game uniforms for the 13-14 season.

Small advertising could generate $100 million in new revenue.

"The view is, that the teams would need a significant time; one, to sell the patch; and number two, for Adidas to manufacture the uniforms, because the patch that would be on the players' uniforms would also appear on the jerseys at retail," said Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

Professional soccer teams have long had advertisements on uniforms and the NBA is using their numbers as projections for revenues.

Anybody not too happy about this? I like the idea as a revenue-generator, but I think the look of it will take some time to get used to.

This brings up some questions immediately for me:

20 years from now, will one of the current jerseys be of more value as a collector's item than the 2013 onwards jerseys?
Do you think they'll continue to sell jerseys without advertisements on them?

Been holding off on purchasing a LeBron jersey until they came out with a new design, but I may have to go buy one, as well as a Wade alternate just for good measure.

I think it strips away the team representation. But given our current situation and we might be in some heavy tax later, I'm all for some revenue.

I don't watch the WNBA but apparently they had it already... I never knew...

I mean... you're seeing a company and not really your team.

Unless they keep the writing and colors, but add patches of a brand it's okay. But if the company overrides HEAT, then BUY ALL YOUR JERSEYS NOW! lol

Like when I think of European soccer teams, I always think of Emirates, unicef, AIG, etc. not really their team jersey. It's just logos all over the place. Only thing they have is their jersey color... I hope it doesn't end up like that... that's terrible.

Looks so horrible and **** on the sanctity of the league, but hey, if it means less luxury tax maneuverings, **** it. Pretty soon companies will pay athletes for space on their bodies, as in tattoos.

Chuck Paliniuk said it all in Fight Club. Eventually companies will sponsor planets, moons, solar systems, etc. The corporatization of our planet has been out of hand for some time, and its exponentially getting worse.

With the badass lux tax payments we're staring down I'd rather have uglier jerseys if we can keep a better looking product on the floor.

You have to think that the Heat will get a huge sponsor with their current level of success. We are easily the most watched team in the NBA.

I was really against this a few years ago but now I'm kind of like "meh". You know it's inevitable. A 2x2" patch on the shoulder is OK. If they start to override the team I'm done buying jerseys.

Estimated revenue is 100 million/year - so thats ~3 mil per team.

A few million bucks is nothing and would barely help to avoid the luxury tax payments. Not even close to enough money to make it worth it for ruining the jerseys.

Yeah Darren Rovell was on Le Batard and mentioned this and couldn't even really explain why the league is doing it.

I'm fine with it. That Red Bull logo, actually looks pretty good. If it can blend in with our jerseys and team color scheme, then go for it. As long as it helps Micky and Pat continue to write those big checks. PEACE.

If the Miami Heat are sponsored by Tootsie's, I'm buying every single jersey.

I just hope it doesn't get completely out of control like Nascar. I just love Jimmy Johnson in his Lowe's, Kobalt Tools, National Guard, Delphi, Quaker State, GMAS, Winston, Hendricks, Chevy #48 car. :D

Miami Subs? Odd enough I ate that today. That ****'s been losing money, stores closing and ****. Don't think they'd be a "major player" in the sponsor race

Think Heat has the Carnival sponsors/commercials all over their website so you can bet it will be Carnival.

I actually think it would be that japanese beer. Why would Micky Arison not take advantage of making a couple of extra bucks by putting a sponsor that isn't his own company?
