Too early to tell of course, but John Jenkins is a pretty dynamite shooter. No question there. But it seems that's pretty much all he brings to the table. Not much of a defender. Not much of a ball handler, distributer, rebounder.
If he turns out to be anywhere near R Miller, that'd be fantastic. But the thing is, Miller needed a special offense to thrive in. He couldn't create his own shot off the dribble, so he had to come off screens (multiple screens) to get the space needed to get those 3-pointers off. These plays were designed with him in mind, and all the other offensive players had to buy into Miller as the primary option in crunch time.
My concern is, can we really count on LD or any subsequent coaches to buy in whole heartedly as to give a limited player (and probably a bench player) the space/time he needs to thrive?
I'm thinking he'll get a few shots in transition, and a few opportunities should teams double down on the post. Problem is, we don't have much of a post presence that consistently requires a double team.
How we approach and commit to running extensively designed plays for JJ will be the difference between him becoming the next Reggie Miller or just the next...Danny Ferry.

Re: Cold J Jenkins be the next Reggie Miller?
ONE positive thing to think about is...
We have three guys 2 SGs and 1 SF that all move extremely well off the ball and are dangerous shooters. So when you really look at that, LD could, in all actuality, just come up with a scheme that all 3 players can run in the offense as opposed to having each of the players have individual scheme. Then on top of that, each guy can have a variation or wrinkle to give defenses different looks.
I'm loving that aspect about our new team.

His game does resemble Reggie's, I watched him a bit at Vanderbilt and his relentless desire to get open looks around screens was something. Quick trigger......it seems as though his shot should be blocked but it rarely ever is. I loved the pick.
I just hope Drew gives him room to grow.

6'9 wingspan with a consistent release point and good lift on his shot allows his shot not to be blocked. I was hoping Ferry was going to another 1st when he saw PJ3 dropping so he could get both Jones and Jenkins..

Reggis is a Hall of Famer, maybe Jenkins' ceiling could be Step Curry. Both Step and Jenk, have a reach of 8'2, and a vertical of 36 inches

Reggie was drafted #11 by Indiana in the draft, it wasn't like he was a definite Hall of Fame type #1 pick in everyone's eyes at the time. He obviously developed rapidly. Jenkins and Curry are in the infant stages of their careers...I wouldn't be so quick to write in stone what their ceilings are.

Drew's dead on with this kid: if he can defend, he'll stay on the court long enough to be a really good player.
With defense, Jenkins could be a Reggie Miller TYPE.
Without it, he's no better than Korver.

Re: Could J Jenkins be the next Reggie Miller?
I think parson hit it on the head.
I know it's waaaay too early to start predicting a HOF career. But 3pt shooters who don't play defense are usually specialist only and tend to float around the league.
For as unathletic as Reggie was, he played his a$$ of on defense in the playoffs. He was limited, but he gave everything he had against the Jordans, John Starks of the world.
If JJ puts in the effort, I could see him easily being a 20 ppg scorer. (Assuming the coaching staff caters to his needs and gives him the PT he needs.)

Reggie was drafted #11 and Jenk was drafted #23, one is lottery and the other is not (Nash was #15, Dumars was #18). if Jenk at #23 can turn out just as good as a guy who was drafted #7 and is averaging 18ppg then that is a huge A++ for Ferry
but to call anybody a potential Hall of Famer before they play one minute of NBA is just a dumb as those people who called Anthony Randolph the next Magic Johnson or Bogut the next Hakeem or Duncan

Let's don't call people dumb. For one thing, I still think Bogut could be very, very good. For another thing, I was about the only other one who thought "Zaza and two draft picks for Dwight and JRich" was within the realm of possibilities.

Re: Could J Jenkins be the next Reggie Miller?
Yeah, I didn't mean he'd be a Hall of Famer. I just wondered if he could be an effective leading scorer as a limited SG who can't create his own shot. Like Reggie Miller.
He came off screens, he hit shots at a high rate, he'll make the Hall of Fame because of that talent.
JJ has a similar skill set. Will we feature him in the same way?

I think Richard Hamilton was the next Reggie Miller. Maybe JJ can be the next Richard Hamilton.
