Bill Simmons on Suns offseason

Post#1 » by navysully » Sat Jul 21, 2012 4:15 pm

In the article, he was comparing the NBA offseason to Game of Thrones:

"The things I do for love."

To Phoenix owner Robert Sarver, who earned a rare compliment by doing the right thing with Nash, landing two no. 1s and two no. 2s and a whopping trade exception to boot. From there, they smartly snared Dragic at a fair price; amnestied Josh Childress to create cap room for Scola (double amnesty!),11 made a respectable max contract run at Eric Gordon (and earned Gordon's "my heart belongs in Phoenix" quote),12 and took an $18 million flyer on Michael Beasley (who gives them much-needed offensive punch AND good fodder for Jared Dudley's Twitter feed). If you're looking for 2013's underdog that overachieves by 12 wins because of chemistry and quirky/savvy offensive players, look no further than the 2012-13 Suns.

(Will they make the playoffs? No!!!!!!!!!! Not in a million years. But they'll be fun to watch. As for any Suns fan out there who's furious that I just praised Sarver, you should know the "Things I do for love" was uttered by someone — SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!! — about to cripple a 10-year-old boy who mistakenly walked in on an incestuous sex romp. That should soften the blow … right?)13

I can't help but agree with Bill here. At the very least, we'll be fun.

If the team overachieves by 12 wins, they'll be in the playoffs, lol.

Bill Simmons is annoying.

I think he means we'll win 12 games more than this team is capable of on paper- Which is probably about 25+12= 37. Still no playoffs.

35-40 wins is the worst slot to be in. Just a blind guess I'd say this team will be decent because we have scorers but the cupcakes we've been stocking up wins against (Dubs, Clipps, Wolves, Kings) are all getting better. I'm not an expert on Win Shares stats but Nash and Hill gone probably takes away double-digit wins. I'll go 29-53...

I cant understand why anyone even wants this season to be a mediocre run. The more games we lose the better so we can get a top 10 lottery pick next year. Next year is when the magic is going to happen; you cant completely rebuild a contender in 1 year. An average team yes but not a contender and I believe our front office sees that.

Next season we get to eject Brown. Setting up the Suns 3 big moves. Lottery pick + max contract free agent + trade for another quality player using assets. With the Laker picks, trade exception along with the reasonable contracts of Scola and Gortat (and Warrik will actually have value at that point as a 5 million expiring) the Suns will have the flexibilty and assets to forge the team into a true contender. That also gives our young guys like Marshall, Morris, Dragic and Beas time to get use to playing with each other for a year and hopefully mature and improve as players as well.

I am truly excited.

Who cares what Billsh#t Simmons has to say (good or bad) about the Suns. I find this mullet-head to be one of the most offensive bloggers in all of sports. He is both arrogant and condescending. He openly roots for the Lakers and "his Celtics" and calls Nash a coward at last season's trade deadline for not demanding a trade to a "contender" like Orlando.

I don't want the Suns to be mediocre ... I want to see them win every game they play.

I can't see why any real Suns fan wants the Suns to lose!!! What ... am I gonna to go to a game and cheer the other team on??? Then I'll go home and build a shrine to the lottery gods in hopes we can get a top pick. Oh but wait ... Stern is the god that rules them all. His evil eye is always looking to punish the Suns.

Really this board is for Suns fans!!! If you're gonna root from our team to lose go visit the Lakers board.

Edit: No damn way your blood is orange either!

I feel like the younger generation of suns fans dont care about the winning legacy we have carried, and view any season that doesnt end in a championship as utter failure.

No one over the age of 25 that has been a suns fan the whole time should be hoping for tanking or be disappointed we are signing legit players to good contracts.

The last two seasons were an epic waste. Three straight would be depressing. That very good regular winning % is an excuse those homers on the radio who work for the Suns say to justify mediocre seasons. So sick of it.

So, basically, you don't know what you're talking about then?

He openly roots against the Lakers, he's a Celtics fan so of course he hates them. When he moved to LA he got Clippers season tickets, so I literally dont know what you're talking about.

He called Nash a coward and then asterisked it and said "I dont really think this at all, I'm just trying to goad him into going to a contender because he's so entertaining to watch and it'd be great if we could all watch him in the playoffs."

Again, don't say things if you don't know what you're talking about.

I know exactly what i am talking about. He openly rooted for the Lakers to beat the Suns in the 2010 conference finals. I do not care about his Clipper's season tickets - they mean nothing whatsoever.

He called Nash a coward - does not matter that he "asterisked" his comments. Look at another way, this arrogant prick was trying to goad Nash into breaking a commitment he had with the Suns organization made at the beginning of the year and goad Nash to violating his own principles, just so the selfish Billsh#t Simmons could watch Nash in the playoffs. This is what I am talking about. BillSh#t is the epitome of arrogance, self-centeredness and condescension. I have many other examples - ask Mark Cuban and Chris Kamen what they think of this "douche" - Kaman's words not mine. You might like and respect him - I do not.

Perhaps you should take a few moments to learn what you are talking about - you seem to be as ignorant as this pompous windbag.

Yep. It's the NBA2k/ESPN/Miami Heat/OKC/Twitter-ification of the NBA fanbase.

Did you even read my comments?

The difference is some people just win now no matter what - do as good as you can with what you have because I cant tolerate losing and I understand that. Then there are people like me who would rather take 1 year to forge the team into a true championship contender for possibly a decade. It's not that I want to lose next year I just realize we arent good enough to make the playoffs so why wouldnt it be the perfect time? If you reread my last post I made some good points.

Remember this team didnt even make the playoffs WITH Nash and Hill - 2 solid all star veterans with IQ and leadership that are off the charts. If you guys think this roster with Dragic, Scola, Beas and Brown has a chance then we just have a different perception of how good we will be.

If you know the business of basketball you can see thats what the front office is positioning itself for. And its not a bad plan, they have continued to impress me so far. They have Gortat and Scola(good players on solid deals) as well as Warriks contract will have increased vaule next summer when it becomes an expiring. Add to that the trade exception we got from the Lakers as well as 4 draft picks. With a pool of assets like that you can trade for a solid player (maybe SG) and still have picks left over to try to package with ours to move up. We will probably land somewhere in the 5-10 range is my guess (before you act shocked remember we were 13 this year with nash) then hopefully we can trade up a few spots and get a young talented big guy like Steve Adams. And with Browns contract option we can waive him next year to clear another 1.75 mil for our free agent run at a max level free agent. We couldnt be in better position for a 1 year turnaround/rebuild if you just look at the big picture and think of how good we could be with that list of assets and flexibility to work with; that my friend should be exciting to any true Suns fan.
