He brings great leadership and can mentor the young guys.
Exactly what I was about to say. What if Henny knows we will have up to 5 players on rookie deals for the next 3 seasons, and other players with no where near a max salary. We have to get to the salary minimum the next 3 years during the rebuild, which could be difficult, so in essence we have to overpay someone. Henny, wanting to start a culture of team loyalty, chooses to overpay Jameer for being loyal, staying for a rebuild, and agreeing to lead a young team.
This is why Jameer is getting paid what he is.
It is very EASY to dish out 1 year contracts that help you reach the cap floor. EASY!!!

Realistically, about $6M a year. I like the length of the deal though. Three years is good.

He should pay the Magic in order to play for the team.

Re: Official Speculation Thread (Pt.XLI Off-Season Edition)
i say about 5, but i'm not upset with it either, 3rd year is not guarantee, if kept, Duhon and Turk comes off that year, i believe, and i'm sure if we draft/sign a PG next year, let Nelson mentor him and florish on year 3 if Nelson is falling off production wise.

the problem with that 3rd year, according to initial reports, is that $3.5 mil is guaranteed. That's not a small amount of money.

Why overpay outside scrubs when you can overpay your captain who emulates everything our GM is trying to bring to this organization.

while jameer is no where elite, he is not a scrub either. the magic realistic signings would have to be dj augustin or cj watson. i think jameer is slightly better than both. he is overpaid but hennigan has a plan to rebuild for the next few years so im ok with jameer being the bad contract opposed to hedo or jrich.

I agree his contract isn't the best, BUT we won't be competitive the next three years, those days are over. I'd rather have Jameer during that time than filling up the roster with 1 year player contracts that contribute nothing but a salary. At least Jameer has been playing here his whole career, he can mentor young players and is all around a professional athlete. Thats the culture we want in this organization.

Why not overpay your captain for just two years?

This is why he got the deal he did. I have no issues at all with it. We aren't going to get anyone better kin that time and his pay is about in the middle for starting point guards I believe.

okay, but why even worry about unloading hedo, jrich, duhon, or bbd? At the end of the day I'm not so much mad that Jameer got the contract then the fact that Hennigan did exactly what we hated Otis for doing.

If it was Otis, he would have given him a 5 year deal.
Not changing this Sig until the Orlando Magic win a championship (Technically Started 1-30-08)

Re: Official Speculation Thread (Pt.XLI Off-Season Edition)
Sessions got 5M/year. Could've had him in a S&T in any Lakers deal
Would've instantly got younger, better (he's a upgrade at this point), and saved us from this awful Jameer contract.
I can't hold it against Henny though since I truly believe they haven't been trying to trade Dwight at all, so he's really had no choice in this. Can't judge him for the coach signing either since Martins and RDV both got the actual crucial meetings and didn't truly let him pick

This board makes me laugh. Complaining about possibly over paying for Jameer because they want to preserve cap space to give it to a guy like Monta Ellis.

I was the first to say that the free agents for the next few years suck if we're rebuilding. Again, its just bad for Hennigan's/Magic image. I'm sure a lot of execs around the leagues laughed at what Jameer signed for.

Agreed. Seriously, who was going to give Jameer more than the MLE?
