Ichiro's pretty mediocre at this point, even factoring in the production boost he'll get for not having to play in Safeco. I'm kind of disappointed they went for a stopgap instead of trying to reel in a bigger fish.

The bigger fish will come in the off-season, I expect them to be all in on Justin Upton. Stopgap is necessary with Gardner now out for the season. Yankees were counting on him coming back so they needed to do something because platooning Jones / Ibanez wasn't going to work. This adds defensive value and hopefully with better protection and a smaller park, he can improve a little bit.

You know this based on terrible journalism, and a few salty ex-mariners. Pretty foolish statement to make about someone who is very reclusive.

Don't need journalists to know that then manager Hargrove wanted to move him down in the order so he could advance runners and Ichiro was very resistant to that...because he knew his BA would go down. He wouldn't adjust his game when he needed to. Well documented, he's not much of a team player BUT on a team like the Yanks he doesn't have as much of a say. He's not a big fish in a small pond in NYC.

Ichiro for what they gave up is a great move for NY. Gives them another professional hitter, more speed and a good glove to replace Gardner. I'd much rather have Ichiro then Victorino at this point. Hit him eighth, or I'd prefer ninth, and have another table setter in front of Jeter, Granderson and ARod.

Great move, with no downside IMO.

The biggest fish can be had for nothing but money after the season if they are looking to fish.

Considering what the Phillies, D'Backs and Twins were looking to get back for Victorino, Upton and Span, respectively, this was a great trade. Statistically Ichiro isn't that that far off from any of these guys statistically this season (even if all 3 guys are statistically having better seasons).

Even long term...

Span, a mild hitting OF, is a platoon type player so would make no sense long term for a team like the Yankees to deal any real prospects for him (and the Twins supposedly were asking for crazy returns). Victorino is a starting caliber player, great speed but he's a FA at seasons end and it doesn't make sense to throw top prospects in a deal for a rental. Upton is the only guy that might have made some sense out of the three to include top prospects for since he's under contract for another 2-3 seasons and is coming off a 31HR season in 2011 at age 24 but my guess is that the D'Backs wanted pretty much every top prospect in the Yankee organization.

Part of it was Ichiro brokering his own deal. He made a bunch concessions. Couldn't wait to part ways.

With Gardner on the DL for the rest season, this is a great move. Yankees have been juggling a bunch of guys in LF, and getting Ichiro will definatly be an improvement. Plus he gave up a lot to be a Yankee, He was willing to switch to LF, He gave up number 51,a number he has had since he was in Japan(Also show the class of the Yankees, not giving Bernie's number away, unlike the Mariner's "Randy's not here anymore, you can have his number.") He will also bat in the lower part of the line up, which is something he has never done in his MLB career.

what a frigging selfish prick!

200 hits a year, 100 runs a year and gold glove defense.

I am sure players like him are a dime a dozen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No where does Dr Deftnik bash Jeter for being a selfish prick. Jeter is paid millions more than any other ss in baseball even though he is well past his prime. Jeter was horrible last year yet he still batted first and refused to let Clueless Joe move him down in the order even though he killed the offense.

sounds alot like Ichiro

WHOOPS!
