The Miami Marlins are telling other clubs, “We are open for business.” And already, those clubs are calling Marlins officials, inquiring about trades for specific players.
Among the Marlins drawing interest, according to major-league sources: third baseman Hanley Ramirez, first baseman Carlos Lee, right-handed starters Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco and left-handed reliever Randy Choate. Of that group, Lee and Choate will be free agents after this season.
The Marlins’ position is clear: They intend to make baseball trades, not simply dump salaries. And the first of their moves came Monday, when they sent right-hander Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for a package headed by right-hander Jacob Turner.
One source says the Marlins will “absolutely try and try hard” to move closer Heath Bell, but the team isn’t optimistic that such a move will happen.
Bell, who has blown six saves with a 6.05 ERA, is in the first year of a three-year, $27 million free-agent contract. Like many of the Marlins' recent signees, his deal is back-loaded. He will earn $9 million in both 2013 and ’14.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Athletics have jumped into trade talks for Marlins' third baseman Hanley Ramirez, joining the Blue Jays and Red Sox.
Very interesting. The Athletics are dead-last in the majors with a .228 batting average and rank 27th in runs scored, so they'll likely need to add a bat if they hope to sustain a run at the playoffs. The Marlins are clearly running out of patience with Ramirez, who is currently out of the lineup with an infection in his finger which developed after he punched a cooling fan in the dugout and didn't take his medication. The 28-year-old is set to make $15.5 million next season and $16 million in 2014.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Phillies have indicated to teams that they are eager to move Hunter Pence.
Rosenthal speculates that Pence could have more value now that Carlos Quentin and Edwin Encarnacion have signed extensions with their respective teams and are off the market. Pence, 29, is earning $10.4 million this season while batting .268/.336/.453 with 17 home runs, 57 RBI and a .789 OPS through 96 games. He's arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter.

Makes more sense for the A's or Red Sox to acquire him than the Jays, unless the Marlins are interested in Escobar.

I like Josh Johnson. Under performing his peripherals which are great, he has under 3 FIP for 3.1 fWAR. I'd give up a fair bit for him.

I'd be all over JJ depending on the asking price, always skeptical about paying a premium price for players who've recently undergone Tommy John... I bet Hanley goes to the Red Sox with Heath for Crawford and Bailey... the Sox have liked Hanley for a long time.

I think the asking price for JJ won't be too ridiculous, as he is owed a fair bit of money and has a poor ERA so far. One Tommy John isn't bad, once you start looking at players with 2 it becomes a problem. I hope we don't go after Hanley, unless it looks like the Ichiro trade. (we send them garbage)

AA could always demand that Toronto will only take Hanley if they offer JJ. Not sure how that plays, but that could reduce the price for JJ.

I can't see any teams trading for Hanley. I don't see why TOR would want Hanley either other than the buy-low opportunity/

I'm pretty sure Miami is just trying to clean up their books so they can do some winter shopping. I would offer to take Heath Bell as well if it reduced the price. We would then give up minimal prospects, and improve our team a lot with the potential to change the face of it.

Heath Bell's FIP is reasonable and his strand rate is unmaintainable (low). It could improve our bullpen, Hanley is a lottery ticket (we could turn around and flip him to save $$) and JJ would be sick.

I think they would to avoid prospects. It's not really that much and it's short term. Alex can say "I got rid of Wells so I could do something like this". So far Rogers has never denied AA money.

You are looking at about 83M over the next 3 years, or 27M a year MAX. That's not a lot for an ex MVP on the right side of 30, a great set up guy, and an excellent pitcher.

Not to mention we can get a 3rd team involved, they will likely send some cash, and/or we can flip Hanley if he starts doing well.

there's NO chance Anthopoulos want's to take on Hanley's contract. he's gonna have a difficult enough time finding the money for a top 3 starter in the off-season, how do you rationalize playing Ramirez out of position and making him our highest paid player? you could almost say the same thing about the Athletics, i just don't see how that works for them financially.

He would rank #1 on the Jays in career fWAR and he isn't even 30. BTW his career slash line was .300/.374/.499. I'm sorry but that's a great line for a 1B. He would be a top tier LFer if he could find his stroke.

Flatjacket, I don't think it's very likely, however because this is an intriguing scenario, who do you think the Jays would have to give up for those 3 players?
