I believe Hennigan overpaid Nelson during the first two years INTENTIONALLY!!! Think about it...

Orlando wasn't going to have money to spend on free agents (besides their own and the exceptions) so who cares about this year? However, with the widely believed reports that his third year is only guaranteed to less than $3M, next season he is almost as good as an $8M+ expiring contract.

We overpay him for the first two years to get him to agree to a non-guaranteed 3rd year while also giving ourselves a bigger trade chip for next season. If we had signed him to $5M a year with a partially guaranteed 3rd year, then that likely isn't enough of a drop off for teams looking to cut salary. Now teams can get a nice spark plug 6th man for 2013 as well as shed $5-6M in salary for 2014.

Interesting take. I could buy that.

Now, I have no inside information to back this up. This is simply my "glass half full" way of looking at the overall situation!

If the Houston rookies sign their deals, Houston is out of the running... It will be Bynum or making Dwight walk away from guaranteed money. I sure hope Henny has a great plan.

Were we looking to trade him prior to this season?

If someone was to trade for him as an expiring, then it would be for the entire season of his services or to trade for him, and the waiving him - saving approx 6.5 million in cap space.

This past season we were trying to remain competitive and keep Dwight Happy. We only had Duhon backing up Nelson. We couldn't trade Nelson unless it was a package deal for a big upgrade at PG. Star PGs are rare and we were without good young prospects to pair with Nelson for a true upgrade at PG.

I believe that the issue wasn't that there were no takers for Jameer's contract but rather there were no takers willing to give Orlando a great PG in return.

This time around, we would be in rebuilding mode. So we wouldn't necessarily need to get an upgrade at PG in return.

Lamb is the only one to worry about. You would think that Lamb and Donatas are the two rookies that Hennigan covets.

Too early to tell, but probably a project player and a first round pick. Or a piece in a larger trade.

It's too early to tell yet it's valuable to have an expiring contract? Who is going to give us a project player and a first round pick for Jameer Nelson? No one would give us a 1st round pick to take Jameer off our hands without sending us worse contracts in return.

Toronto sent a guaranteed lottery pick to Houston for Kyle Lowry. I like Lowry as a solid player, but don't mistake him for Chris Paul. You honestly believe that there isn't a playoff team with a #20-30 pick out there that wouldn't love to have Nelson come off the bench for a season?
