During my playing days I would have rejected any and all offers from The Wizards for the chance to play professional basketball in Australia for this team. :D

You might or might not be interested to hear that I lived in Oxon Hill
before it was called Fort Washington out past the end of Fort Foote Rd.

Our family moved there in 1966 when I was 9, then later moved to
Herndon 2 years later when my father got a job in Reston only to lose
that job less than 2 years later. He ended up with a miserable commute
for many years going from Herndon to Suitland where he worked for NOAA.

I went to Fort Foote ES for 2 years.

jim, it was still called Oxon Hill when my family moved there in 1972. We lived off of Allentown Road. Herndon to Suitland is a pretty good distance, jim. Even back in the day the traffic on I-495 was no joke.

As far as my interest, I sure hope I didn't come off the wrong way with my PG Co remarks. Just this morning I dropped my car off for repairs and the shuttle driver was from NY. We both have been on the island around the same time. Both have the same feelings about our respective hometowns. He commented on how fast people in New York walk and how rude folks were. My impression of the area around Friendly HS is just how much things have changed since the late 70s. Police squad cars patrol the area when school lets out. There are bars on the windows of gas stations. Nobody seems laid back any more. Might be because this is an island, but the pace is slower.

I do care the DMV, but I can't hang any more. If I came back I am sure I would adjust and appreciate all the area has to offer. I probably need to stay flexible, just in case life brings me back.

"Get your ass to DC..."

Post#64 » by Induveca » Wed Jul 25, 2012 10:39 pm

Loved DC as an aspiring young techie building my career.....but I've taken two close girlfriends to DC in the past five years. One was from Peru, one Venezuela.....both well travelled and both loved nightlife.

Both of them were not fans of the DC area at all. Very segregated feel to DC nightlife still unfortunately.....and the subway doesn't cut it for anyone but workers. Of course both of them had spent a lot of time in NY.

Also for whoever it was that claimed Georgetown is a world class shopping district you're greatly mistaken. It's like Tyson's Corner was dumped onto a street. My latest girl I took up there this past December said it was like an outside Miami mall (not a compliment). Other than some old ladies selling antiques it's Banana Republic, Gap, Bebe etc etc. 90% mall style clothing stores.

CCJ, my remark about being interested or not was just a way of trying
not to create too large an aura of self-importance to what I was saying.

My sense of self importance rubs some if not many the wrong way, jim.

A) Thanks as always CCJ.
B) Pretty sure many of you are using old statistics. Our area is growing at an amazingly fast rate.
C) Indy is funny in his/her (old joke) infamous DC hate. In eight years, nothing has changed lol. We are about to have two chefs on Top Chef. About twenty internationally known restaurants have been established (not counting the hundreds of nationally known ones). Five cooking shows are now based out of the DC area. We have locally grown internationally known designers sprinkled around the area (I don't follow that nonsense, but I do shop for Valentine's day) and imported many others from New York. The National Harbor is about to become another Atlantic City, with MGM and Cirque coming first. The exclusive bars and clubs are tenfold from what there were ten years ago. Not to mention the number of clubs quadrupling in that same timeframe. Etc etc etc...

And as I stated, the 9:30 once again this year was voted best club in the nation by Rolling Stone and Billboard. I believe that's the third year in a row, though not limited to three by any means.

Me and my wife were watching the first episode of the current "Bad Girls" series and one of the girls said she was from DC. She is actually from Northern Virginia.

I grew up in DC and had a BLASSSSSTTTTTT!!!! Had to get my kids out though. Didn't want them to grow up in survival mode, and I still have a low opinion of the schools. Moved to what I call, a suburb of Baltimore, near Arundel Mills.

I get the whole B-More/DC rivalry. They are not the same. Areas within Anne Arundel County and Howard County in my opinion, are B-More suburbs. Areas witin PG and Mo County are DC suburbs, as well as NOVA.

I think the Wiz under Leonsis will eventually shed the "Polin Label" and be attractive to players. Winning cures all ills in basketball. In the NBA you have to win first, attract FA's later. In the NFL, you can spend first, and the Skins attract players, even while losing. The problem is that Polin label the Wiz still wears, combined with the losing.
