Hate to say it, but thus far it's better than Vancouver.

The Winter Olympics are a much smaller event, and therefore have much less money to work with (because they earn much less money).

All under a guitar solo. Danny Boyle must've been high as a kite planning this.

Um actually yeah. When it comes to countries it's about size of economy and Britian trumps Canada everyday of the week. Canada is tenth in the world GDP and UK is 6th. This even with all their troubles and our relative economic health.

We have a higher GDP per capita, which is what actually matters.

They spent quite a bit of money in Vancouver. I just meant in terms of work put in and execution. I just felt the opening ceremony was corny. It's obvious the British did this show with thought of pleasing their own people first and thus pleased most of the veiwing public I think. In Vancouver I felt as Canadians, we wanted to please others and while overall it was nice, it was pretty cheesy at times and came accross as trying too hard. Meh JMO.

I can't shake the feeling that this ceremony, for the most part, is a huge British circlejerk. Most of the casual viewers around the world probably don't understand half the references.

The last 30 minutes have a sky high PCR (pop culture reference) per minute rate

Considering that most of the world has been influenced by British pop culture over the past century, I'm pretty sure they will.

That's what makes each ceremony unique. That's the point isn't it? To have it unique to each host city/country. That's what makes it special.

Re: 2012 Olympics: Opening Ceremony Thread
I mean, I get one pop culture ref per 10 second (The Who, OMD, Gary Glitter, Boomtown Rats, Beatles, Queen...) and I am missing at least 70% of all the references
