Post#1 » by Klomp » Sat Jul 28, 2012 2:07 am

Well, we're all but done. How'd we do?

June 26: Wolves trade #18 to HOU for Chase Budinger.

June 28: Wolves draft Robbie Hummel at #58.

July 12: Wolves waive Darko Milicic, designating him as the team's amnesty player.

July 13: Wolves waive Martell Webster.

July 13: Wolves trade Brad Miller, 2013 BRK 2nd, 2016 MIN 2nd to NOH for future conditional 2nd.

July 15: Wolves sign Nicolas Batum to offer sheet (POR matched on July 18).

July 24: Wolves trade Wayne Ellington to MEM for Dante Cunningham.

July 25: Wolves sign free agent Alexey Shved.

July 26: Wolves trade Wes Johnson and 2013 MEM 1st to PHX in three-team, receive 2013 BRK 2nd and 2016 MIN 2nd from NOH and 2014 LAL 2nd from PHX.

July 27: Wolves sign free agent Andrei Kirilenko.

Pending Moves:
Wolves have reached a contract agreement with Brandon Roy.
Wolves have reached a contract agreement with Greg Stiemsma.

ESPN gave us a C- one of the lower scores in the league.

Overall: B+

Wish Kahn would've given Batum 4/50 instead of what is closer to 4/42. Or if we would've got him - either would've boosted that grade. I don't like trading a pick right before the draft, never know who is going to fall. Thought we gave up a little much to dump Wes. This off-season goes up to an A- if Roy is healthy this year, an A if Shved turns out and an A+ the two previous conditionals work out AND Kirilenko proves to be an above average SF and we make the playoff. Would've rather had C.Lee or Mayo than Roy and Kirilenko and Stiemsma both got slightly more than I think they should've.

Off-season goes straight to an A+, for me, if we trade Barea/Ridnour & Williams for Iguodala.

i'd probably give us a a- or b+...not sure i like the value and asset retention in some of the trades but i really like the players added...significantly upgraded talent, especially on the wing and added overall depth.

Who cares what ESPN says? The only question is whether or not the roster has improved or not. The answer has to be YES and it is not a small improvement, either. We have made improvements at our two biggest areas of need (sg/sf), not to mention the bench. ESPN is the tool of the large market/sexy franchises. They appease for ratings/sales.

My grade: B.

That, and it was also not including our latest flurry of activity.

B-

On paper we improved a great deal. But AK47 and Roy are most assuredly going to miss games. AK hasn't played a full season since his rookie year. Roy has never played a full season.

Shved is young and intriguing, but who knows. Budinger is a solid bench pickup. Stiemsma is undoubtedly an upgrade to Mr. DNP.

We are going to need every available body this season.

That's not exactly a common thing, to play every game. Here's the number of players in the league who have played all games the past few years. Basically 1 player per team.

11-12: 36
10-11: 32
09-10: 39
08-09: 30
07-08: 43
06-07: 34
05-06: 29
04-05: 26

On paper the team improved and they dumped a lot of bad production for some average to good production, which should make the team a hell of a lot better. But there's still questions about most of our signings (Roy's knees, Shved's transition, AK and Steimsma's health) so I'm not going to go crazy.

I would give our off-season an A, but we don't know how good Roy is right now.

We shed Beasley/AR/Darko/Ellington/Johnson and turned it into Kirilenko/Shved/Roy/Steamer/Cunningham

AK47 > Beasley
Steamer > Darko
Roy+Shved > Johnson+Ellington
Cunningham < AR (But Cunningham knows his role and won't try to step outside his talent level)

IF Roy is really back to where he thinks he is, A+ off-season, we upgraded our roster at every position.

I don't care for giving up a 1st rounder to dump Wes, but damn, no one can say Kahn & Co didn't seriously clean house this summer.

It's like when Hercules cleaned out the Augean Stables.

Outgoing Players: Beasley, Wes Johnson, MN 1st, MEM 1st, Webster, Darko, Randolph, Ellington, Tolliver

Incoming Players: AK47, Roy, Shved, Budinger, Cunningham, Steimsma, Hummel, Conroy?, MN 2nd, BKN 2nd, LAL 2nd.

IMO of course:

AK47 > Beasley (Heck, even AK > Beas + MEM 1st)
Roy (even at 50%) > Wes
Shved = Webster
Budinger > Terrence Jones(or whatever rookie this season)
Steimsma > Darko
Cunningham < Ellington (I liked Waynedrops)

The rest of that stuff I considered garbage in the grand scheme of things because
-Adelman doesn't usually play rookies
-Randolph was not going to play with Adelman coaching
-late 2nds and summer league invites don't matter
-Kahn can't draft anyways. If there's a rookie prospect in a draft Adelman wants...I bet Kahn finds a way to make it happen (hopefully within the rules since the draft won't wait for us. )

There's more to it than that, but I think that still sums it up nicely. Many of the new guys are on 2 year deals or shorter AND will most likely be more productive than their alternatives for the next 2 years. I think we improved our wings while keeping us flexible in the future in case it doesn't turn out.

The "WOW" move I was waiting for turned out to be gambles on Roy's knees and AK47. I was hoping for Iggy, but at least we didn't end up with Jamal Crawford.

Current grade (pending): Solid B.

Compared to the rest of the league with a similar market, I'm not sure any other team did better. I'm a tough grader, but I believe MN set the curve in the public school. And we all know there's just no competing with those private schools jerks...

I wanted Kahn to go after AK last off season so I am extremely happy that he got AK after he had a stellar year overseas. Roy, Shved, Bud, Steam, and Cunningham are all great fits on the team and none are on bad contracts.

So glad he didn't take the easy route and trade for Iggy and Martin.

A+
