^I said I'd give him 3 years (the day we drafted him) since it usually does take more time for bigs to develop.

Jonas Valanciunas should meet Ruta Meilutyte.... 15 year-old gold medal swimmer.

Re: Jonas Valanciunas Summer Discussion II
Personally, I believe we need to stop hyping this kid up. The more that everyone talks of this kid in our media the more likely everyone in our lovely city will be disappointed. In his first year he is going to look medoicre at best. For most Toronto fans that will not go well along with the hype they have been hearing through the media.
I am willing to give him 3 to 4 years. He looks quite raw, but defintely has upside. His biggest adjustment will have to be to the pace of the NBA game and the physicality (at times). Both of which he likes. I Don't think he will be a franchise changing center like some of the media/realgm are saying. I see him as a very very solid center that might make 1, dare I say 2 allstar teams in his career. His biggest impact will be on the defensive end. I feel like Casey is the right coach for him. he'll teach him the ins and outs of playing defense at the center position. We should be excited for the future as many young C's don't have a solid coaching staff to back them up. I can say that for the first time in a while we actually have both at the same time.

He will be just fine, he will work hard and will work himself into a very good player. Maybe not the superstar people here are hoping for but a very good NBA Big Man. You can't watch one game against NBA players and make assumptions about his game.
I do think he would have been much better off in the Summer League this summer though as far as his development

ItsDanger wrote:Given his playing time, he did OK against a veteran-laden team like Argentina. Dont understand why he didnt get more minutes when they were down so much in the 2nd half though.
HSOB SIRHC wrote:Yeah, I don't think he was in foul trouble in the second half. He only played 3 mins in the 3rd quarter while still only having 2 fouls.
BBC feed was mentioning some kind of hand injury kept him out of the 3rd quarter, which is why we didn't see more of him.
As for the game, Lithuania was just outclassed in every respect. When you don't even have the guardplay to get the ball up the floor, your bigs aren't going to have much of an impact.

You guys cant knock a 15 yr girl for her appearance yet
She's a swimmer so upper-body development is essential. All I care about is that she won a gold medal for Lithuania! Hopefully she'll meet Jonas someday.

I accidentaly just got tickets to tomorrow's game. Looking forward to it!
We need a revenge and this is win or die game, as Jasikevicius said, so I hope Lithuania will show more passion and much better basketball this time!

The LTU NT actually saw Ruta swim for gold

Hopefully this will be some extra motivation!

Well if LTU can't even beat the two African teams, then they might as well not have bothered to play in the Olympics at all.
Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise.

I disagree.
I think playing in the Olympics is going to be a tremendous asset for him. If nothing else, getting to play against the US team will be worth it.

Re: Jonas Valanciunas Summer Discussion II
I'm torn because I see it both ways...
Like hank says ..the experience is invaluable.
But they aren't a favorite for a medal, and likely won't make it out of the their group. Where as he has a big season coming up, the experience with some team mates from the Raps, being able to rest more from July-Sept hoping to extend the rookie wall further down the road.
Who knows really which is better for him.. They each add something different in terms of development while possibly delaying others... so doesn't that just make it a wash in the end?

The guy is playing with some of the best players in the world. He's learning to play in ultra high pressure games. There's nothing he can do elsewhere to better prepare him for the NBA. Scrimmaging against a few Raps in some random gym in Los Angeles and then going out on the town isn't going to get him so far. You also don't need to spend the summer with your teammates to have good chemistry.

Nice attempt to totally change my post into whatever it is you just went with there.

He could play 0 minutes and the time will be more valuable then hanging out with DD in Los Angeles and playing pickup ball in the Drew League.
Anyway, he'll average out to 20 mins per game by the end of the tournament. He already got a lot of burn in the qualifiers. Val's entire summer will be far more productive then playing in the SL and trying to build chemistry with separated teammates.
