Trade Deadline!

Post#1 » by TheLowlySquire » Fri Jul 27, 2012 3:38 am

Let's predict what'll happen this deadline and then laugh about how wrong we are.

I say we get another guy for the bullpen, maybe Chris Perez. We'll look for a back of the rotation starter but won't get one. We'll look hard for a middle infielder and get one, but he'll be a scrub.

Don't be surprised if the Giants and Rockies make a deal. Colorado has scouted Fresno and Richmond recently. As I reported the other day... The Giants asked about Marco Scutaro for bench help a couple of weeks back. RH relievers Rafael Betancourt and Matt Belisle also could...be a fit. Belisle is a better pitcher, but Betancourt is more available. And no, I have not heard Cuddyer's name.

Rockies still not happy with Giants over humidor monkey-business allegations from '10, but they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of sending a top evaluator to Richmond to watch the Squirrels if O'Dowd will not trade with the Giants out of spite.

Blah. Scutaro is having a really poor year, but it just half a season removed from a pretty good one in Boston. I also don't like the idea of taking a solid piece from the farm to make a deal happen, as good as Belisle is.

The San Francisco Giants have acquired infielder Marco Scutaro and cash from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league infielder Charlie Culberson, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced tonight.

Apparently we got Pence and didn't give up Gary Brown. Phillies are in a free for all move with their players right now.

I can't say I ever really expected much out of Joseph. Pence better be good.

Newest Phillie Tommy Joseph batting .260/.313/.391 at AA with 16 Doubles 8 Home Runs and 38 RBI in 80 games...blocked behind Posey & Sanchez

Not bad, probably would have never played with Posey and Sanchez here anyways. Although I would have rather had Sanchez learn 1B and then put him in to back up Posey..

UPDATE:,11:08 A.M.: Giants have confirmed that the deal is now official.

UPDATE, 10:55 A.M.: Nate Schierholtz has been told he is going to Philadelphia as part of this deal. Minor-league pitcher Seth Rosin is also going to Philly.

ORIGINAL POST: Multiple national reports say the Giants have acquired power-hitting outfielder Hunter Pence from the Philadelphia Phillies for catching prospect Tommy Joseph, but the Giants deny that the deal is actually complete.

See ya, Nate. I'll miss you.

I liked Joseph, but this is a sweet deal.

We're getting cash too.

Funny how we could have had Pence last year for Wheeler + Joseph, but I'll take it. He would have never played with Posey/Sanchez on this team for the next 4-5+ years.

Plus, he looks like a 42 year old hitting coach, at 21.

Sabean totally raped the phillies. Can't believe we kept Brown, Panik, Crick and Blackburn and we'll have Pence another season.

We'll be just fine at catcher with Posey/Sanchez/Susac.

For real. I was justifiably worried when I heard about getting Pence (since it would have cost up Wheeler last year) and justifiably shocked when I heard what we gave up.

Sabes!

Great trade, I love it. Will miss Schierholtz with his great play in RF and his formidable arm, but this is a huge everyday upgrade for the Giants.

Now their relief is still looking very shaky, they need an upgrade there, and Lincecum needs to right the ship and at least be reliable and consistent if not spectacular. If those things happen, the Giants are in a great position for a postseason run, but those are two big ifs.

Speaking of relief, when does Mota come off his suspension? Pretty soon, right? Wasn't it just 100 games at the start of the season?

I'm really excited bout this trade, always liked Pence.

If we can start pitching good again, we're gonna be alright 8-)
