2013 pitching depth

Post#1 » by satyr9 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:30 pm

Okay, not exactly where our head's are at right now, but do I (potentially) have this right? Obviously lots can change just today and then there's a whole offseason, but with last night's trades is this our depth for next season?

MLB
Romero
Morrow
XXX(I refuse to believe there won't be a starter added one way or another before next year)
Alvarez
Happ

AAA
Hutchison
Drabek
Cecil
McGuire
Jennings

Hutch and Drabek are down just because of injuries, I'd imagine there'd be a pretty crazy ST battle if all this held together for whoever's healthy (although at least 1 probably goes to add my xxx too as trade seems far more likely than straight FA signing)

MLB RH
Santos
Janssen
Lincoln
Delabar
Villanueva (do not want him to leave)

AAA RH
Stroman
D.Carpenter
Carreno
Dyson
Beck/A.Carpenter/whoever

MLB LH
Oliver
Loup

AAA LH
Perez (like Hutch and Drabek, it's just his injury that puts him in the AAA tier)
Crawford

That's a pretty deep group IMO. I'm hoping this thread gets irrelevant quickly today, but you'd be able to go 8 starters deep (using CV) before you got to kind of scary, and at least one of the bottom two could bounce back from this year's disappointment. It sure would be nice to have a real AAA team to put them on and not hold a bunch at AA.

I'm not sure I have read it right, but I thought we were looking at putting our AAA team in Buffalo?!?

Would be fun to go watch some of those guys SOME of the time too!!! Buffalo has a nice ballpark.

The next move has to be for an elite top end starting pitcher. We have a bunch of fringe starters that could slot into the 4/5 position outside of Morrow and RR. Ideally keep 2, move 2 to the bullpen, and ship the rest out in trades.

4/5
Villanueva
Alverez
Hutchinson
Happ
Drabeck
Cecil
Laffey

Villaneuva has done well very well this year, such that he keeps this up, you can't keep him out of the starting rotation.

The BP depth is starting to look very good, hopefully we can keep both lyon and frasor around for next year too.

Offseason - AA has got to sign at least one good SP. We have issues around our hitters, but seeing how the Jays are #1 in runs scored, i hardly think that another bat is a huge priority.

Let's hope Rogers opens the vault up this offseason and AA can go shopping for a good SP, at least a #2 type.

So I just realized Perez is out of options. When he comes back what are the limitations on conditioning stints in the minors? Would we have to put him through waivers if he needed significant time in AAA? That'd be poop sandwich.

I see one of Nicolino or Syndergaard (hopefully Syndergaard) pushing for a back-end spot in the rotation maybe even next season.

I expect AA to trade Syndergaard, Sanchez and d'Arnaud for another reliever. Those relievers are so important!

It would be ironic if we traded them for a LF.

Probably a cheap scrub like JD Martinez.

Its crazy at how fast people change their opinion of AA so fast.... he is still one of the best GMs in the league and people need to understand that not every deal he makes can be a big steal.

I was about to post this in prospects 'cause it was in reaction to Stroman moving up to AA, but it's not really on topic, but is here, so:

There are obviously a lot of ifs involved in what I'm about to say but... IF Stroman ends in the 'pen and the new additions prove capable of staying mlb calibre relievers, the 'pen may be pretty stable for quite a long time.

Lincoln, Delabar, Loup, Perez, and Stroman under control through at least 2018.
Santos controlled through 2017.

That's 6 of 7 spots (should probably say 6 of 10 when you factor in yearly injuries and struggles) controlled for 5-6 years. Obviously, it won't be anywhere near that stable (if we got to 2018 with even one of them I'd be surprised), but I do think this is AA's counter to the CBA changes, it just took a while. He wants his 'pen stable and cheap.

I don't like the price paid for Lincoln (although if you actually get 6 years of very good relief, I'd say there's a pretty solid possibility it works out well for AA), but if you add it all up there's a ton of investment in the 'pen for the long-term (the money "spent for the short-termers has been done to death) in the last year. Let's just hope it pays off for the next 3-5 years.

Jays will need to target two starters via trade/free agency IMO. Romero has looked like he belongs in the minors and Morrow (despite his current injury having nothing to do with his arm) has yet to prove he can pitch a full season in the bigs consistently no matter how strong he was this year. Pencil in losing Drabek, Cecil looking like BP pitcher at best and Alvarez having his struggles augmented by not knowing how Hutchison will bounce back. Practically, everybody in the rotation will have some type of question mark next to their name next season. If AA and co. fail to acknowledge this then we may be in for another similar type season next year.

Bringing back Marcum might be our best bet for starters, but I still strongly believe we'd need another reliable (not necessarily high caliber) arm that will eat some innings and give us a chance to win. This year we ran into some obstacles that we couldn't have predicted but I am absolutely tired of seeing the likes of Jo-Jo Reyes, Aaron Laffey and the Brett Cecil's of the world destroy any chance of us putting up win streaks. Our inconsistent offense should shoulder some of the blame, but I really hope that when next spring rolls around our starting rotation at least seems to be a sure thing.

If you want my 2 cents, I pawn off some of the farm on King Felix to boot. Velocity down or not, he is still a dominant pitcher who would immediately become the undisputed ace.

Our bullpen should be absolutely fine assuming Santos is back and capable of holding down the fort. I think it is almost hilarious that had our bullpen not cost us so much this year we could still be perhaps 3 games out of the WC even with this joke of a series in Seattle.
