Dean Brogan has been the only guy who successfully made the jump.

I feel like there's a lot of skill involved, or at least being Australian.

Anyone else find the +1s on each post are annoying? I like the idea, it's just too big, and should be where all the other posting buttons are, at the top right.

They are using an ancient message board script called phpBB, which was popular in 2002 but hasn't been used anywhere else on the web now for some time. It would cost them thousands of dollars to switch to a different system though, in order to preserve posts/profiles. I think they should bite the bullet one offseason and do it, close the site down for a week. They'll find that they can add many new features, make the forum faster, and get rid out of all the bugs.

The +1 thing I'm guessing is something that they are adding in manually with written code. I like the idea but yeah where its at right now is too intrusive.

They wouldn't have to shut everything down if they were willing to lose every single post ever made. At any rate, phpbb is fine.

phpBB is fine true, but its like trying to play newer video games on a playstation 2. Coding gets more advanced with time like any other technology, and the code for phpbb is ancient now. There hasn't been an update in 5 years. Meanwhile, there are other forum softwares available with cleaner code that would allow such things like PM's, search function, view user posts, like buttons, each user having their own social media-like wall when you click their name, and more importantly, take up less space and bandwidth and fewer glitches and downtime. A good example is over at the huddle. http://www.carolinahuddle.com/boards/us ... awnyblaze/

But again it would take thousands of dollars to convert to a different software (if its even possible since phpBB is so ancient) so I can see why it hasn't been done and not a priority. Could you imagine the amount of backlash if RealGM started clean and posters lost their post count/join date? It may not mean much to you but there are a lot of people who take pride in stuff like that.

Yeah, it keeps me nervous I could accidentally click on (one of those three icons).

And hey I like it how the forum is less social!

Not really. It's like trying to use phpBB to construct a working forum. Pretty easy.

You can have PMs with phpBB
amcoolio wrote:search function,

You can have a search function with phpBB.
amcoolio wrote:view user posts,

Can do this too
amcoolio wrote:like buttons,

Not sure on this one, never tried it because it's pretty lame.
amcoolio wrote:each user having their own social media-like wall when you click their name,

You could just link to their facebook if you really, really wanted to be a tool. Oh, and you can build your own sort of profile pages on your website if you want.
amcoolio wrote:and more importantly, take up less space and bandwidth and fewer glitches and downtime.

Now this I admit I can't speak to. Though realgm always loads very quickly, even when I'm on a very poor connection. I have to imagine it's at least bandwith friendly for the users.
amcoolio wrote:A good example is over at the huddle. http://www.carolinahuddle.com/boards/us ... awnyblaze/

Yeah you could make something like this easily on a website that uses phpBB. It's not that phpBB is useless, it's that you want a forum plugin that does all this stuff for whatever reason, and that's dumb. Those profiles are honestly pretty weak.
amcoolio wrote:But again it would take thousands of dollars to convert to a different software (if its even possible since phpBB is so ancient) so I can see why it hasn't been done and not a priority.

Not really. They could construct it separately (it would likely have different SEO URLs anyway) and then make it live the same moment they drop the current phpBB thing. But they'd have to find a way to get all the phpBB stuff, posts, users, modships, warnings, etc. over. That, they might find more troubling.
amcoolio wrote:Could you imagine the amount of backlash if RealGM started clean and posters lost their post count/join date? It may not mean much to you but there are a lot of people who take pride in stuff like that.

Yeah I've only been here a few weeks, maybe a month. People might get annoyed, I wouldn't really know. But it's not worth doing even without the possible backlash because there's so little to be gained.

The plus one thing is kind of annoying in that it took me back to the first page of this thread. I should be able to click it without going to a new webpage, if it's going to be there. On the other hand, I just won't click it.

You can do those things I mentioned on phpBB, yes, but not with a userbase as big as RealGM's. The search if it works at all is glitchy, you can only PM mods, there are errors during peak times, etc. Thats what I was getting at. Of course you can do anything with phpBB if you run a small forum, but RealGM is massive and the coding update would really, really help.

They set those things themselves, it's not like you try to PM and it doesn't work.
