I spent a week in Chengdu in 2003. That far inland, there are very few people who speak any English whatsoever. Typically, the five star hotels in major cities have front desk people who speak a smattering of English, but not in Chengdu. I had a hard time communicating "hotel" to the taxi driver. The people were very nice and friendly, though.

Also, at 5-9, I was a giant there. I got a lot of strange looks while walking the streets (I suppose the red hair and freckles may have had something to do with that as well).

If you want to feel even taller, come to the Philippines.

I have in fact been assigned to Chengdu. I speak basic Chinese and will be interviewing people in it for 3-4 hours per day, so I'm not worried about the language issue as much. My wife is, but she's Japanese, so at least she can read everything, and she's already started taking Chinese classes.

My expectations for the food are sky high. I am expecting the best inexpensive food in the world, and I'm confident that I won't be disappointed.

Speaking of traveling... :)

Me and 3 friends just finished a 3 night/4 day roadtrip through Europe a week ago, we decided to go as unprepared as possible (no hotels booked etc) and just go... :D

http://goo.gl/maps/GzqSQ

We left Rotterdam (The Netherlands) on Friday morning around 9,
Paris (France) - Spend the day
Lyon (France) - Enjoyed the nightlife, spend the night
Marseille (France) - Spend the day
Monaco (Monte Carlo) - Enjoyed the streets (WOW), left because it was waaaaaaaayyy too expensive, lol... Spend our night at a gas-station parking lot between Monaco and Milan... lol, never again... :nonono:
Milan (Italy) - Spend the day
Zurich (Switzerland) - Spend the evening; we we're planning to spend the night here, found out that they don't accept euro's, Exchange offices were closed so had to continue driving towards...
Stuttgart (Germany)- Enjoyed the nightlife, spend the night
Frankfurt (Germany)- Spend the day
Rotterdam - Reached back home Monday evening around 8:30pm...

Sh*t was awesome, awesome experiences, met awesome people... It was especially cool because people told us we couldn't do it, and we did it, bigtime... I was the only driver though, but I love driving, so no problem for me... 8-)

If I had several weeks to travel, I would go to western Canada. Vancouver is one of the most appealing cities to me on earth. Whistler is supposedly gorgeous; I don't ski and I hear it's great in the summer.

I'd then travel to Banff and Lake Louise which are outside of Calgary. Supposedly some of tbreathtaking country out that way.

great choice in a place to go Fish.

I've been to the PacNW a couple times, skied Whistler/Blackcomb (I DO ski),
stayed in Vancouver for a scientific meeting (great city). Loved it all.

Not convinced I would want to live there but it was spectacular.

I have a good friend from growing up who now lives there (Vanc). Just got tenure at U of BC. Says the only thing he doesn't like about living in Canada is that there's less shopping selection online. Loves what he he refers to as more of a cultural respect for fitness, health, nature, outdoors, etc.

W. Unseld wrote:Someone give me a top 5 travel destinations for traveling with your wife in 2012 por favor. Have a ton of miles we have to use and my international travel isn't quite up to snuff.

1. Paris without question. Women melt over there. Between the excess flowers, amazing architecture and superb history....it's a must. Even better, jump on a Thalys train and go to Cologne Germany in about 3 hours for a night.
2. St Barths. Amazing beaches, but very pricey. But again, a woman's dream beach/resort.
3. Amsterdam. No not for the drugs. It's a truly fascinating city with great restaurants, nice bars, and the circling waterways within the city are great for interesting walks. Anne Frank museum also a must. Rent a car and check out the countryside or drive to the German border near Dusseldorf.
4. Cusco, Peru. If you are the more adventurous type and don't mind some 3rd world vibe can't go wrong here. World class food, and an amazing city which was the Inca capital and Spanish stronghold after the conquistadors ransacked the country. Macchu Picchu a short train ride away.

I'm assuming you wanted outside USA. If not, will say New York City is far and away the best city in the world for an all around experience. Hundreds of museums, thousands of restaurants, ridiculously expansive transit, best shopping in the world, zero need to drive.....currently live, and have lived in NYC for near 15 years of my life and only boring days I've had are ones I've chosen to be bored.

A few places to avoid:
- Rome (tourist Disneyland, huge lines, buses everywhere, painful).
- Berlin (gross people, lots of bums, industrial vibe)
- Shanghai (not ready to be a tourist destination IMHO unless from lesser cities in China. If you want to visit mainland china for first time though, choose shanghai over Beijing)
- Spain (I'm Dominican so I am biased, but wasn't a fan of the country. Overpriced, and not a fan of tapas). If you want to hang out with drunk British tourists, Ibiza is the place to be.
- London. Insanely expensive, and usually a letdown. London makes New York look cheap. Also, as a single guy the women are atrocious

one could do a lot worse than a tenured position at UBC in Vancouver.

Fish, I'm in Montreal for 2-3 months and that's very accurate. E-Commerce here is 8-10 years behind the US. Most companies simply won't ship here anymore. Apparently Canadian customs is just too inconsistent (by province even, with quebec apparently being the worst). Amazon.ca has almost nothing compared to Amazon.com, and typically 1-2 week ship times as well. Zappos wrote a whole article explaining canadian customs ruined their customer experience and they didn't make enough from Canada due to those issues to continue.

Not sure what I expected, but I didn't expect a trip back to 1999 which is usually what Montreal and Toronto feel like in comparison to New York. I have a better understanding of why players are hesitant to stay with the Raptors. Want a pair of shoes for an event in two days? No zappos for you, no next day shipping, it requires a trip around the city to vastly inferior stores compared to the US.

Still waiting for a protein shake I ordered from the US 3 weeks ago. It's sitting in customs.

That being said the city itself is quite fun, but I'd never want to live here on a permanent basis. Very inconvenient. People regularly take cross border trips to "Plattsburgh New York" for shopping purposes.

DRH, that eurotrip sounded intense! Was it cheaper to drive than to get the eurorail pass?

Also, we can "like" posts here now, like on facebook?

Yeah, way cheaper... Toll was about €150, diesel about the same... That Railpass would've cost us atleast 350 a person... Plus a car makes it easier to get around in cities... :)

I did a euro trip last summer. Rented a gasoline car just for the autoban which was VERY expensive. I found the cheapest way to travel was to fly. Flights around Europe are surprisingly cheap.

The following are all free. There are probably paid apps that do the job better, but I'm too cheap to buy them:

Weatherbug for weather.
Pulse as a news feed
Pandora for internet radio
TinyShark to search for and stream specific songs on demand
MyPod for capturing podcasts
Tiny Flashlight + LED to turn your phone into an emergency flashlight (uses camera flash)
ES File Explorer as a file manager that can access your home network
CamScanner to turn your camera into a PDF scanner
Evernote as a notepad which backs up onto the internet
handyCalc is a better calculator
Simple Stop is a stopwatch that uses hardware buttons instead of the screen
Screen Filter can dim the phone beyond it's normal range (useful in near total darkness)

Spain is awesome. Madrid and Barcelona are beautiful.

Milan > Rome also.

Tapatalk, you can add the RealGM forum and access/post from your phone...

Too bad RealGM doesn't sync your "read" status, meaning you might have read a thread on your phone, only to see it as "new/unread" again on your computer for example (RealGM doesn't support this, some other forums found in Tapatalk do)

Funny, with all the coaching vacancies, why aren't teams beating down the door to hire Flip Saunders? :P

Maybe Flip wants to collect his $4M, do a little "consulting" and take a lot of vacation. Oh to be a fired NBA coach!

Who says pimpin' ain't easy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suhr_Sports

Suhr’s success over the last 6 year period took the National pole vault scene by surprise. This drew incredible interest and criticism. Suhr's competitors identify him to be at the highest expert level in what he does (pole vault technique). Suhr was quoted responding to criticism, "Success breeds incredible jealousy, first people say you are lucky, then they criticize your technique, then when they can no longer do that, they attack you personally and simply say “we don’t like his coaching style or philosophy”.[3] Suhr taught for several years with a degree in education.

With swag like that, no wonder he has a hot, much younger wife.

Image

But what makes this man both player and pimp, is that last Olympics he tore his wife down. No compassion at all when she lost. After she lost in Beijing, brother (mere technicality that he's white) didn't wait to let her know she messed up. What did he say building up to this Olympics?

http://observertoday.com/page/content.d ... l?nav=5123

"I am a critical coach and upfront," Suhr continued. "I am very direct. Isinbayeva is as close to unbeatable as you can get. Jenn has enough confidence to get in a tussle with her. Jenn has jumped very high in practice - much higher than she has in meets. Yelena's jumps are mind boggling and intimidating. But not to us. Jenn has jumped heights Isinbayeva has in practice. We know Yelena has the potential to jump very high. She isn't intimidating. Isinbayeva has a mental edge. But Jenn has a different character. We rise to the challenge. We just are not intimidated by her at all. As good as Yelena is, we know in some aspect of pole vaulting, Jenn is better than her."

And right before the games,

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/ol ... story.html

For the first time before a big meet, Jenn Suhr heard a positive message from her husband, Rick, who’s also her coach.

While sending Jenn onto the field for the Olympic pole vault final Monday night, Rick told her nobody’s unbeatable — not even Russian superstar Yelena Isinbayeva, the two-time champion and world-record holder.

Before I went out here, he said, ‘You’re going to win this,’” Suhr said. “I’ve competed 100 times and that’s not something he says. It puts that extra spunk that I could do this. Someone else believes in me that much.”

When it was over, Suhr rushed over to the stands to see her husband, who gingerly wrapped an American flag around her shoulders while she sobbed into his chest.

This guy Rick Suhr, like Bobby Kersee, makes pimpin' look easy! Put that extra spunk in all right. :)

Image

Now, I wonder if she drops him like a bad habit now that she has the gold, or, if he's gonna be in there like that dude that's married to Celine Dion? There are some young women out there who just need the right coach. My new pregame motivation.

I think Kobe playing in Europe for a year after he retires from the NBA would be awesome. Kobe may be a jerk in person but he's a good ambassador for the game nevertheless.
