Faced with a choice of letting the likes of James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant continue to “punk” him and his teammates in practice or step up to the challenge, Wall chose the latter. “He got better every day,” Select Team Coach and Team USA assistant Jay Triano said on Wednesday. “I mean, I think [Tuesday], in the scrimmage, he was good as anybody on the floor.”

At the conclusion of their training sessions with the Olympic team, several members of the Select Team lauded Wall for his play. Indiana Pacers forward Paul George said the standouts from the week were Cleveland Cavaliers rookie of the year Kyrie Irving, Utah Jazz swingman Gordon Hayward and Wall.

“John showed everything — his playmaking ability, his open court speed and his shooting,” George said. “I really think he opened a lot of eyes on his shooting.

Making extreme statements like "only" sounds like there are "no" Jokics in this draft? Jokic is an engine that was drafted in the 2nd round. Always a chance to see diamond dropped by sloppy burgular after a theft.

two of those three weren't even connected to ball motion. He was being well defended by a pipsqueak and he punched him with his elbow.

I like fierce Juwan Howard, looking like he finally found something he could do well for the Heat: look like he's about to get into a fight. He should just sit on the end of the bench with that look all the time.

I haven't watched that clip in a while. Excellent reminder of the fact that Juwan Howard is a complete chump. He clearly still hasn't forgiven the DC fanbase for the merciless booing and took two cheap shots in the same season against the Wiz.

My favorite part of the video -- that I couldn't appreciate at the time -- is around the :30 mark, Wittman glaring at Juwan with complete disdain for his faux toughness. Witt looks like he's thinking "I could drop you so easily right now; I just WISH I could." No wonder our players love Witt and made Ted keep him.

Flip looks like a scrapper, too, in that clip, fish. Saunders was right in the middle of the scuffle between Javale and Juwan.

Randy Wittman is in the perfect spot to punch Howard at :29. He does look ready to go, fish.

I don't think Javale has seen his last altercation on the court, either. Say what you will about McGee but the dude will fight. So will John Wall. John impressed me there with his heart, if not his execution.

When I've talked with folks around the league, the perspectives I get on Wittman typically fall into two broad categories. Those who like him describe him as a "competitor." They use words like "fiery" and "tough." Those who don't like him as much say that during his playing days, Wittman wasn't above the odd cheap shot here and there. And they use words like "dick" and "****." From what I've been able to glean, Wittman has...umm...matured since his playing days, and since his last head coaching gig.

Nivek, I started to say sucker punch or cheap shot but just went with "punch" in reference to Witt's strategic location. Prehaps from experience, sort of like a Ray Lewis on defense, Randy knew where to be to make a hit.

Your word of mouth on him jibes totally with how I feel about him. Wittman clearly didn't like McGee and that wasn't going to change. He reminds me of Jerry Sloan. He doesn't mince words. At the same time, if he likes you Wittman is a coach who will fight for you. Literally, even. Players will love that guy unless something they say, do, or fail to do ticks him off. He will get in their face and confrontation could be ugly.

With the acquisitions the Wizards made, Randy is going to go from good guy to bad guy when it comes to minutes. How this coach distributes minutes and whether the Wizards win their fair share of games is going to be huge toward Wittman's coaching longevity. Things could go south in a hurry if they lose.

ob Wall reference

http://tinyurl.com/cvpogen

In a recent magazine interview, Wall, now the longest-tenured player on the roster, mentioned that he would like to be “the savior” to lead Washington back to the playoffs after a four-year drought. Wittman challenged Wall on the defensive end last season and has kept tabs on his progress this summer, as Wall trained with Team USA as a member of the select team and continues to work out in Los Angeles.

“This is a big year for John,” Wittman said. “John knows, I think, what is expected of him. The thing I like is, he’s embraced it and I think he wants it. Now, it’s a matter of him taking that next step in his game. And he’s put a lot of hard work in thus far and I’ve been happy with what I’ve seen in what he’s been doing. You always want your leader to want to step up to the plate and make that next move.”

I think Witt is ready and looking forward to continuing to run things
(as a meritocracy) next year just as he did this year.

Also re Nene and PF, it sounds like they are trying to monitor things well.
The question I would have is whether the team needs to step in and shut
him down. Obviously no one would really want to have to do that and deny
Nene the chance to represent his country. But athletes are notorious for
having major denial in assessing their health status and whether they need
to sit/rest/recover. They HATE that.

“I’ve been in touch with him throughout it all,” Wittman said of Nene. “He’s been doing the right things. He’s been around long enough to know what’s smart and what’s not smart and I think he handled that pretty good. He said he’s feeling pretty good here since he’s been over there. So that’s a positive.”

This makes me happy. I love the idea of our coach and team culture getting under the skin of opponents. And while the "odd cheap shot here and there" may not be the most honorable thing in the world, I think there's some value in someone who will get in opponents' faces, send messages when they need sending, and make the opposition worry about when the next elbow to the kidney's might be coming -- anything to distract them from the job at hand. I think it's a lot of what endeared Deshawn Stevenson to Wizards fans, particularly when Lebron was at the height of his douchery. We are going to be really unpleasant to play against!

I don't think so. I believe Irving is going to distance himself from Wall as the better PG. Kyrie is a much, much better shooter. He doesn't have to operate at 100 mph to be effective. He's better than Wall, though not nearly the athlete. John has proven to be more durable than Kyrie Irving, but IMO he's not as good.
