I say we continue to judge the prospects of a 20 year old based off a three game sample size in international competition.

Regardless of what he does at the Olympics, it doesn't change his prospect status.

The result is he dominated Brazil's front court (with three solid NBA players in Splitter, Varajao and Nene) and helped Russia. Not really sure why the Lithuanian coach has such a tight leash on all his players. Pocius was their best player against France and he only played 16 minutes.

I've watched the team for the past three months and they've looked pretty weak and disorganized, and that was with Javtokas. Whatever the issues are, it goes beyond just fouls and poor PnR defense. He fouled a lot at the ECs and he was still given opportunities to play his game.

It has to do with no rest probably. Some guys got rest just one week prior to training camp and some literaly flyed less than one week before Olympics qualifications next day after their season ended... Ofcourse some of coach decisions we saw cant be explained.

He's exhausted. He hasn't had a break in well over a year. He's been playing basketball non-stop. Training, basketball, what have you. It's actually coming to a point where it's concerning because if he doesn't get a good month's rest soon he will be prone to injury, very likely.

he prioritized other stuff than the Olympics? and what about the tired nba players coming from a shortened season? he's not at par to them? if that is his actual excuse then it's even worse then.

He's a 20 year old center. What exactly are you expecting?

Wow, you are really going out on a limb there. Favors is your only risky call and he will prove you wrong, most likely.

Lithuania has no interest in developing Valanciunas right now. If he has a bad start, they'll bench him. Winning a medal is their one and only goal right now.

I don't think he has bad starts. The coach simply believes that he shouldn't foul anyone. He doesn't seem to hold any other player to the same standard. Look, you have five fouls, what is the big deal with using them?

Jonas' fouls haven't been smart fouls but over aggressive fouls. Those type of fouls coaches won't tolerate especially in this kind of setting. The fouls Jonas' commits are very similar to the ones Amir Johnson gets by being overly aggressive. For Jonas he needs to learn how to be aggressive and not foul.

General Board backlash to over enthusiastic Raptor fans pimping the best Raptors prospect in a decade. Nothing more to see here.

Fouling issues aside, if I were Jonas I wouldn't even want to play for Lithuania again if it's under Kezmura. I've never seen a player get ignored or looked off more than Val does while he's open off flash cuts or pin downs. The Lithuanian guards would much rather kick it back out for a 3 or throw up a contested floater than drop it off to Jonas. I honestly have no idea what their gameplan is and they really have no hope of coming near a medal this year.

He's going to benefit greatly from the open style of the NBA game and, most importantly, from Dwayne Casey's system. A mobile 7 footer with a 7'6 wingspan and good hands in Casey's defensive system? Perfect. If Bargnani can pick up on the rotation patterns, so can Jonas.

He's a project, but he'll still have a solid rookie year. I seriously doubt Casey will worry about letting Jonas use up those fouls.

Did you type that out yourself or copy and paste it from an old DeMar=next Kobe thread?

He will be an okay bench player. Rap fans need to stop over hyping their players. I thought Derozen was going to be a superstar? and what happened to Ed Davis being like a prime Jermaine O'neal?

Put the exhausted thing aside, since I didn't say it.

Just his performance, at 20 years old, what are you expecting? You said you had an eye for busts, what really about him speaks of a bust?

Just because one or two people say that, it doesn't mean MOST Raptor fans are overhyping their players.

Having spent a large majority of the time on the Raptors board, MOST raptor fans are saying that JV is an intriguing prospect. He can run, plays pick and roll really, good rebounder, good defender, has a soft touch and shoots FT's really well. Those factors make him a really interesting guy to look at.

MOST Raptor fans understand he's a 20 year old prospect center that's going to have issues in his first year or two. Especially being foul prone, which almost ALL young centers are.

I said I had an 'eye for busts' since I on more than on one occassion predicted a player to be a bust. sorry if it hurt your feelings. :) but Jonas really is in MY bust-list this year.

So stupid. There is a portion of every fanbase of every team in sports that overhypes their young players. It just so happens that on RealGM that the Raptors fan base is by far the biggest.

It's funny that people bring up the overhyping, yet there is also a contingent that feels like Derozan is trash, wanted BC fired for drafting Ross and thinks Jonas is a scrub (mostly Dr. Mufasa).
alienchild wrote:Again, I hope the basketball gods give us the 14th pick in the draft. I hope OG asks for a trade, Birch signs elsewhere and GTJ signs an offer sheet and Raptors don't match. Frankly Masai is dead to me.

You do remember that fans everywhere were hyping DeRozan, right? It wasn't just Raptor fans that thought he had all star potential, same goes for Ed Davis.

If you don't think Jonas will be a starting C in a few years, you likely have never seen him play. Doesn't mean he'll be a perennial all star, but "average starting C" is his floor.
