did lebron really deserve to win ROY?

Post#1 » by lovethewire » Sat Aug 4, 2012 8:11 am

I always thought melo should have been rookie of the year, I never actually checked the numbers until tonight, aside from melo getting his team to the playoffs, he also shot a better fg% 3% free throw % and was better on the boards, LEBRON had all the hype, but if the tables were turned, melo was the high school Phenom and number one pick, would lebron still have won it?

No Melo did. LeBron had hype. So he got it.

Melo for sure. Lead his team to the playoffs in a stacked conference.

That's the one award Melo will ever deserve over LeBron.

LeBron was better, Melo had a way better situation. LeBron had to do everything for his team at 18, Melo had to score.

PPG 20.9 RPG 5.5 APG 5.9 for LeBron: Cleveland goes from 17 to 35 wins (+18Ws).

PPG 21.0 RPG 6.1 APG 2.8 for Carmelo: Denver goes from 17 to 43 wins (+ 26Ws).

Any of them would be deserving. LeBron has a little better statline, Carmelo has more team success. But ROY is an individual award.

Also for voters age had some impact. It's not normal for a guy at LeBron's age when he entered to have that success right away.

I understand the point of Melo deserving it but I think people play too much the card of team success only.

EDIT: LeBron also put SPG 1.6 and BPG 0.7. Melo had SPG 1.2 and 0.5 BPG.

The media clearly accounted for the hype & expectations LeBron had to live up to at the time. Carmelo, despite coming off a National Championship did not have the same kind of expectations to live up to as LeBron did. He also had a much better team overall.

LeBron deserved the ROY.

3% better in FG... lol. Somehow you forgot the APG. That didn't matter, right? You only choose the stats you want. What about steals and blocks also? Cause LBJ was better in both.

Carmelo wasn't the only player they added that season. Don't forget that. He had a better supporting cast than LeBron.

Cavs added players as well in the style they always did
players that could replace starters without a major dropoff in talent and fit

Melo deserved it but understandable for Lebron 20/5/5 is historic

LeBron deserved it, hitting 20 - 5 - 5 at 18 and setting a ton of youngest to" records was worth it.

You can only argue team success for Carmelo, but that's not what the award is for.

People remember, individual award. Team success is a factor, not the sole reason

Bron and Melo are the same age. Both born in 84 Melos just 6 months older

20/5/5 = automatic ROY.
