ot: visiting phx, things to do?

Post#1 » by Moochie25 » Sun Aug 5, 2012 10:02 pm

hi guys,

i'll be making my way to phoenix for a few days this summer and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on what to do/see while i'm in town on a friday and saturday? i've skimmed the "things to do in phoenix" on tripadvisor, but except for a few things, not too much appealed to me. i'm a guy in my mid-20's traveling alone who can't golf and avoids the club scene (i prefer dive bars, but i guess going out alone i should look for more popular bars), if that helps

so far, i'm planning on:
seeing the diamondbacks

hiking at south mountain

going to an asu game

visiting the botannical gardens
i'll be there for two days + change (thu night - fly out sunday morning), so i'm not sure if that list is enough... what else would you guys recommend (or tell me to take off my list, haha)? any help is appreciated!

If youve never been make sure you park at Mill ave and University near ASU. You can just walk down Mill ave - its all pimped out lots of cool stuff for rich college students-plenty of good eating and of course on friday or saturday nite you will see a huge pack of hot young women in the same area just waiting to get banged by some out of towner. It's right by ASU.

If I was 25 years old and coming here thats what I would do.

I would also not recommend hiking south mountain mid summer unless you really like punishment. Plenty of cool indoor stuff to do. People who live in AZ dont go out as much during the summer its kinda the opposit of other places. Now the other 8 non summer months are great for anything outdoor.

I have an idea since we all know a number of great local restaurants... Give us a few types of food you like and we can make alot of good recommendations. One thing PHX has no shortage of is good restaurants.

If you like Mexican food my vote is for Valle Luna. Only 3 restaurants but everything from the hot sauce to the food kicks butt. And if you like tequila they have 2 crazy strong margaretas named the white and red death.

If you like pizza Barros pizza is a way of life more than a restaurant in AZ.

My hamburger vote goes to the Chuckbox.

Closed.

Lo Los chicken and waffles and Carolina are both in downtown Phoenix and both real good.

Bar hopping on Mill for college crowd or Scottsdale for older crowd. If your bringi friends lucky strike in downtown is fun its a bar/bowling alley. There is also a nice comedy club in the same building.

Dress up as a cactus and walk the main street. No one will ask you anything.

From my experience, Scottsdale which is just 15-20 minutes drive from Phoenix has alot more stuff to do and places to hang out more than Phoenix. So my recommendation is - get a car drive to Scottsdale, and hang out there.

Definitely this. Go mid-day though like 1-3 if you go around dinner time like 5 you'll wait forever.

I'll 2nd this. If you are going to hike, go at 5:00am. You will sweat like crazy, and by the time you are done, it will be soooo hot. You can play some really nice golf courses for super cheap too, if you're into that.

But yeah... its phoenix in August. Thats when you hang out by the pool, go bowling, see a movie, or stay indoors... and hope you get to experience a HABOOB!

Oh, and Chino Bandidos on 19th Ave and Greenway is a must-experience. It was on Drive-ins, Diners, and Dives. Its Chinese/Mexican food. The mascot is a giant panda wearing a sombrero.

appreciate the suggestions, gentlemen... i will be going in september, so hopefully it'll cool down a little bit then? no way i'm waking up at 5am on my vacation, haha

DRK wrote:I want to know the exact number of posters we have here who have "Moochie" in their name

probably just me? i've always had an affinity for scrubs, probably because i was one myself - plus, his hair was awesome

DRK wrote:Dress up as a cactus and walk the main street. No one will ask you anything.

that gets boring after awhile

YFZblu wrote:Yes - Pizzeria Bianco is a must.

interesting... i'll write down all of your restaurant suggestions in my phone, and then depending on the type of food i'm craving, i'll check it out... i'll be eating like an a-hole for an entire week, so we'll see what i'm up for

anything - food, drinks, things to do - uniquely phoenix (or arizona) i have to do? scottsdale has more to do than phx? i wouldn't have guessed

Eat a cheesecrisp.

It's our version of the quesadilla... the Arizonan fare of Sonaran Mexican food is a bit different from your standard fare.

Oh, and Filbertos.
