Team USA Halts Lithuanian Upset Bid

Team USA took its first punch of the Summer Games Saturday afternoon. And while they may have been wobbled by the grittiness and savvy of a veteran Lithuanian team, Lebron James and Chris Paul refused to let the United States go down.

James and Paul had a hand in the final 19 points for Team USA as they avoided Lithuania’s upset bid and clinched Group A with a 99-94 win at the Basketball Arena in London.

It was easily Paul’s best outing in four tournament games. In short bursts, he resembled the game-changing superstar who led the Clippers to the Western Conference Semifinals last year, playing his best in the first and final quarters.

“That is a good team we played right there,” Paul said. “We knew that coming in so it’s always a great game when you play against Lithuania. Luckily we defended and got some stops down the stretch, guys made a few big plays. We knew this was going to be a dog fight and those guys played an unbelievable game and they played really hard.”

PAUL AND TEAM USA ARE GOLDEN

“This is the most fun time of my life; ‘08 was all good and well but there was something about our 2012 team that was just special,” Paul said. “I hate that this was our last game playing together. It’s something that we’ll never forget.”

Paul had 11 points, two assists, and three steals, leaving London with a tournament-high 20 steals in eight games (2.5 per game). Kevin Durant scored 30 points with nine rebounds, while Lebron James had 17 points and seven rebounds.

James spoke afterwards about some of the veteran players’ relationship with Krzyzewski.

“I think between me, Coach K, CP [Paul] and Melo [Anthony] we’ve been through it all,” the three-time MVP said. “We were part of the whole rebuilding of the USA team trying to back to where it was before.

“We were able to win gold in ‘08 and that was a big step for us and four years later, being put in this position once again, we kind of all share the same traits.”
