Living in Orange County you really can't go wrong doing it in Laguna. It really is beautiful at sunset.

If outdoors:

1. Depending on the hotel you stay at, you may have rooftop access, which equals great views.
2. Buckingham Fountain
3. Promontory Point or close to the Museum of Science and Industry (great architecture and history in Hyde Park--very gothic vibe).
4. Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe, or Garfield Park Conservatory.
5. Starved Rock

As an addendum, I highly recommend you check out the Black Canyon when you're out west also. Much different from the Grand Canyon but very majestic (and much less touristy) in its own right.

If you hold off and do it out west there's a small island off the coast called Catalina. It's like a 20 minute boat ride and you can rent kayaks or bikes and get around to the empty side of the island. It's nice and romantic if you want to get away and do it a little more intimate style. Laguna gets crowded.

Black Canyon is awesome. If you really want to take a few days, hire someone to take you up on horseback for a few days into the high country. Weather there is great this time of year, some great small trout streams. And the views are unreal. Skip Vegas and do this for a few days instead.

carry the ring around with you in the days leading up to the planned proposal so if you find a perfect moment you have the option of making it spontaneous

"i was planning to do this in a couple of days, but..."

i've thought it'd be cool to have the proposal videotaped somehow

Margie's Candies on Western and Armitage... the most authentic 50's place in the world with fanstastic ice cream. But it is mom-n-pop emough to work out planting a ring in a candy tray or a turtle sundae.

Also... what about the lagoons by the Museum of Science and Industry? Very historic and well kept (World's Fair... I even understand the famous attorney Clarence Darrow had his ashes scattered there... he can be a patron saint for the marriage).

Take her to 'Arnies' in Harvey, IL.

Propose while you're getting a lap dance.

I proposed to my wife on the spot where we had our first kiss on the north Milwaukee lakeshore. It was about -5 below zero and the wind was howling at night. Snow covering the ground. Told her I wanted to go to a familiar spot to have a dance to celebrate her promotion. I spoke from the heart and got down on one knee (in the snow) and asked her. We were freezing and shaking, but the ring fit and all has been great ever sense.

As for Chicago...I'd go anywhere where you can see the city from the lake. Adler looks like a beautiful place.

If you love your girlfriend, you would do it here. It's a great strip of land in between the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. You're overlooking the lake and the entire skyline is right in front of you. One of the most breath taking views of the city. It would also make for a great photo op when you visit.

If you do it here, make sure it's before 10pm. Some **** cop gave me a ticket seconds after we got there. Only wanted to show the view to a friend who was visiting from France and leaving the next day :-?
